In the short term (2006 season) and longer term (next 2-5 years), who would be the 10 most important players for this seaon and the near future at the Carlton Football Club? Consider factors such as match winning ability, leadership, attitude, talent and marketability. Here are my thoughts;

1. Fev (great talent, match winner, sparks the team)
2. Stevens (next captain???)
3. Waite (future superstar...no doubt)
4. Lance (great down back)
5. Murphy (speculative...the next 3-5 years?!?)
6. Kouta (still has something to give)
7. Lappin (Mr. Reliable...usually)
8. Thornton (will be an excellent FB)
9. Walker (future AA HBF/MF)
10. Simpson (looks the goods)

next 3-5 years:

1. Stevens- ability and leadership
2. Waite- one of the keys to our teams future- must keep developing
3. Walker- getting better and better-could/should be almost our best player
4. Thornton- the key to our backline
5. Fev- should be able to kick 100 goals a year, but who knows?
6. Murphy- solid midfield role....
7. Carazzzo- solid midfield/ tagger
8. Russell- hasnt shown anything yet, but hopefully we havent wasted another high draft pick! If he develops he could be a very good player
9. Kennedy- as far as Im concerned the best player in last years draft- no doubt- so probably will be important in a few years time!
10. Fisher- improving more and more- could be a real force in 3 years if he doesnt keep getting injured!!!

That's a big call. Never seem him play, only the highlights they provide around draft time. Would you elaborate on why you think this. I'm not disagreeing with you, just interested in your opinion.

1) B. Fevola (superstart 80+ goals this yr? real focal point)
2) B. Fisher (pressure off fevola, hard match up, get hands)
3) K. Simpson (pase, class, skill, FUTURE!)
4) A. Hartlett (developing nicley, could be a SUPER full back)
5) M. Murphy (will be good, no doubt, looks cool under pressure)
6) A. Bentick (hard nut we need under packs)
7) N. Stevens (already a star - future captain, could be a little harder)
8) R. Houilhan (if he takes da step "toughness" will b an A class cetreman)
9) S. O'hAlpin (just like J.Waite, just a bit rusty and can get lost in traffic)
10) J. Kennedy (future captian? big strong focal point, ala J.Brown)

In no real order: (Immediate future, this year and next)

Brendon Fevola
Nick Stevens
Matthew Lappin
Lance Whitnall
Ryan Houlihan
Anthony Koutifides
Jarrad Waite
Brett Thornton
Kade Simpson
Andrew Carazzoo

---------------- They are my top 10 for importance.

You may notice I left Marc Murphy out, he is 18-years of age and I don't want myself to put all this pressure on the kid to be one of our best players in the next season or two.

S. O'halpin - will only play when he is ready, which is not too far away. Will have a dramatic impact in our forward structure due to the fact that it is already verging on greatness. May not be a brilliant player but in such a potent forward line will shine and deliver well above his potential which is already abundant.

A' Ohalpin - Apparantly going to be better than his brother. Taller and better. This is saying something and people will come to rue carltons foresight on this. People will aspire to have his locker after he has left, there will be plenty of liams, seamuses and Aisakes running around lygon street in the years to come.

Kennedy - A lot talk about this kid and hope something comes to fruition, along with all the others from hatlett to Jackson.

Blackwell - there is already talk about this kid coming into the team and he is a RAKE. All that means to me is he must be good. That is exciting stuff. (Prospect of another gun carlton son next season as well. Father son rule....good for carlton, not so good for others ;) )

Walker - this kid has arrived. There was speculation pre-season about whether he would take the next step, and judging by the first half against melbourne the answer seemed to be no. Unfortunately for some saints, collingwood and to a lesser extent hawthorn fans around here the second half saq him take a giant leap forward. This guy can play footy. He is going to be the supercharger on an immensly powerful machine. Pace, power, poise and dedication. As yet unrecognised and still with some proving to do but a continuation of the last two weeks will see him become one of the biggest names in the afl.

Simpson - Whoa there fella. This guy has some pace and some skill and then some more. Total class act who can can not only get, carry but deliver the ball. And when he goes near it he says "mine" and it stays "mine" until he decides who gets it next and its going to be the person who is about to kick a goal for the blues.

Murphy - this guy is not going to be fast (see simmo, walker) or powerful (der) or any of those things. But he is going to be the kind of guy who can pin a tail on a donkey 50 meters out on the boundry with Big bad barry sitting on his head. Need to know who he is take a gander at one craig bradley.

Waite - Is going to part of the forward package. Fev wil keep on keeping on, others will come in (kennedy, ohalpin, fish) and allow this guy to play his natural role as a raker. Will fill out more and looks very damaging. With other players taking the primary defenders this guy is going to be left aone to damage othre teams.

Fish - see waite. I genuinely think this hamstring problem is going to be the last of his woes for a while and in about 8 weeks will prove his mettle. Coaches are going to man up Fev, Waite, one of Kennedy or ohalpin and then look at fish and say "streuth, who else we got ?"

Lance - is going to win the BF this year and be an All Australian defender within the next two years. (Will be playing with walker and simmo).

Houlahan, bentick, carazzo, mcgrath, lapin, stevens, scotland,.......etc

That might be so but elaving out Andrew Walker is a sackable offence. Take the keys to the room of mirrors and have a good hard look at yourself.;)

short term importance
1. fisher
2. french
3. livingston
4. whitnall
5. houlahan
6. kouta
7. fev
8. walker
9. murphy
10. blackwell

my list is quite different from most others though I've looked more towards team structure. Fisher comes in at 1 because he provides the link between midfield and forward - reliable mark, good at the contests and a consistent goal scorer. French at 2 because we have no real ruck backup (not overly impressed by mclaren yet). Livingston perhaps a surprise at 3 but if he can hold down FB it releases thornton, whitnall, saddington to create. Whitnall at 4 due to the flexibility he offers to the team and on field direction/presence. Houlahan perhaps surprising at 5 but if you watch the first 2 games you will see what he offers - creativity, skill, the ability to accumulate the ball and surprisingly hardness at the ball. Kouta at 6 for onfield presence, hardball gets and the attention he will continue to draw if he remains in good form. Fev is a bit rough at 7 but he is still the 2nd most important forward atm (have whitnall listed as a backman atm) so I havent rated him as low as it might seem. Walker at 8 for dash out of the backline - wouldnt have had him in the list 2 weeks ago but first couple weeks of season has done a LOT better than expected and shown more than previously. Looking very good atm. Murphy/blackwell round out the top 10 for their ability to extract the ball, vision and creativity - also due to age and ability to accumulate possessions.

Those unlucky to miss are waite, stevens, saddington and thornton.

I just watched him heaps alst year and he has ALL the attributes to make it big time. Hes big, has good hands, can kick, and best of all has a bit of mongrel in him. Already in the VFL he is pushing around people, wait till he puts on size, will be a monster.

Basically in last years draft I wanted Kennedy then Murphy..... we got them so Im VERY happy.

lets only hope next year we can recruit well again!!!!

Few things wrong with this but straight off the bat you are going to find Kennedy come into the team either this week or next providing a link as you term it. Apparantly his form in the magoos has been great, kicking a three the last 2 weeks with a LOT of competition. Leaving Simpson off a list is also a sackable offence and you also need a spell in the room of mirrors. Apart from that pretty interesting approach.:)

The reports from people at the reserves games have said he is absolutely ready for the ones. Hitting the packs hard, marking goaling. In a team with waite, fev, fish things are going to look grim for the opposition. setanta and kennedy should both play.
