Does anyone know how our under 18's team did against Ireland? I think they played the curtain raiser at the Docklands before the Saints/Lions game on Thursday night.

NAB INTERNATIONAL RULES UNDER 17 1ST TEST
AUSTRALIA: 0-3-2-11 0-4-2 14 0-9-4-31 0-11-6-39
IRELAND: 0-3-0-9 0-5-2-17 0-5-3-18 2-7-6-39
GOALS – Australia: Nil
Ireland: Hanley, O'Driscoll
OVERS - Australia: Sellar 4, McIntyre, Millar, Kreuzer, McEvoy, Collier, Hawkins, Normington
Ireland: O'Rourke 3, Mulhall 2, Cullivan, Murphy
Australia's Ryan Normington had a chance to win the game after the siren but sprayed his kick and went out on the full. As Ireland hold the trophty Australia must win the remaining 2 tests to regain the trophy.
2nd Test at AAMI Stadium on Sunday (Curtain Raiser to Port/Frem)
3rd Test at Fremantle Oval on Wednesday

They showed some footage of some players at the half time break of last nights game, Normington wouldn't b feelin to great atm. Why didn't he kick across his body?
They showed Gibbs (c), looked very poised, Rioli, bit of magic, Everitt's younger bro, and Sellar who was just about BOG they said.

Went along last night to get a look at some of the new youngsters.
Hard job to assess players as the game is played marginally differently. Interesting to see how 'smart' the players are to adapt. Main judgement is on speed, athleticism and basic football judgements.
My opinions:
James Sellar was probably the most impressive. Great size and athleticism. Displayed great judgement for the round ball and took some strong marks, while most others would wait for the ball to hit the ground first. Also finished very well, both on the run and from a set shot;
Tom Collier played as a zoning off CHB. Read the game very well, and ran a few Irish lads down. Took some strong rebounding marks. Will look forward to seeing him at the Nationals;
Bryce Gibbs started in the centre with Tom Hawkins, which, to me, essentially indicates he is the standout player. About 6' 2" rangy midfielder. Lean, agile and balanced. Moves with an economy of movement and appears quick, though not express. Appears a quick Ryan Griffen, at the moment. Wasn't the most impressive on the ground.
Brock O'Brien - I love this bloke. Looked a touch taller and more solid than last year. Still his same hard, aggressive, uncompromising style. Laid a great shirtfront (which is illegal in hybrid rules), but runs well out of defence and creates well.
Tom Hawkins. Moved well and took some strong marks, particularly late. Doesn't appear brilliantly quick for a forward, but is a hard worker and would make a good CHF if his endurance is up to it. All set shots were drop kicks rather than normal punts. Allows better control and accuracy, but lacked penetration on a couple of shots.
Andrejs Everitt. Good quick mover played as a medium type defender. Runs to the right places. Plays with confidence, which is an asset. May be more of a Saddington tall (Sydney style - vote out Carlton style), and play as a utility rather than a genuine KPP, but that's based on playing against smaller, quick opponents, rather than KPP opponents. Wait for the Nationals. Anticipated to be overrated due to the name and background though.
David Masten. Played as a midfield cum half back flanker. Displayed good explosive pace. Very balanced midfielder.
David Armitage. Bigger bodied yet hard aggressive running midfielder. Looks like a good wingman type that could play inside & outside.
Cyril Rioli. Played as a forward pocket type. Good pace (especially for a Rioli). Betts/Davey type tackler pressure out of forward line. Wasn't on long enough to make an assessment as a midfield type.
Ryan Normington. Medium forward that showed good balance and goal sense. Impressed around Hawkins & Sellar. Had shot after the siren to break deadlock and sprayed it wide, which disappointed.
Ben Reid. Played at CHF. Worked hard and presented in 1st half. Didn't see much in 2nd half. Would've loved 100 games from his Dad!
Disappointed not to see Matthew Leuenberger, Albert Proud and Gavin Urquhart amongst others. Will obviously play in later games, so look for results/performances then.
James Sellar impressed, but Lachlan Hansen was U17 last year. Wait for National Champs before decisions are made.
My wishlist at present would still be headed by Hansen with O'Brien hopefully to last til a 2nd round pick.

Also good to see Zac Millar named 3rd best. Pretty good kid this guy without being totally outstanding, not a bad aboriginal prospect.

2nd Test
Was also a tied match!!
Looks like its going to be an exciting 3rd Test on Wednesday (10:30am at Freo Oval)
3rd Test 2004 -
Mitch Morton was disallowed a over to win the game as the final siren had just beaten him
Cyril Rioli. Played as a forward pocket type. Good pace (especially for a Rioli). Betts/Davey type tackler pressure out of forward line. Wasn't on long enough to make an assessment as a midfield type.
If your referring to Dean, he is not slow. Trust me. He maybe overweight, but i tell you he is not slow.

Good to see that the biff in IR isn't reserved to the main games, there were few little scuffles (nothing like Johnson though) throughout the bits of the match that I saw at AAMI.

Yep, very much like Griffen, I thought his kicking with a round ball was a little bit average.
Brock O'Brien - I love this bloke. Looked a touch taller and more solid than last year. Still his same hard, aggressive, uncompromising style. Laid a great shirtfront (which is illegal in hybrid rules), but runs well out of defence and creates well.
Yep, hard as nails.

Played in the forward line most the time. Really liked his game. Could probably devolp into a Clint Bartram type midfielder.
Cyril Rioli. Played as a forward pocket type. Good pace (especially for a Rioli). Betts/Davey type tackler pressure out of forward line. Wasn't on long enough to make an assessment as a midfield type.
He has a very accurate kick.

He pulled out of a contest and IMO average game.

Australia has won the third Under 17 International Rules Series Test, defeating Ireland by 15 points. The victory was the first in the series after the first two Tests ended in ties.
Australia jumped the Irish in the first quarter to lead by 12 points and retained the lead throughout the match. Ireland bounced back in the final quarter to score 17 points, but it wasn’t enough to catch the Australians.
Australian captain Chris Masten and Bryce Gibbs were again impressive in the midfield, while David Myers was impassable in defence.
AFL National Talent Manager Kevin Sheehan described match as the best performance in a decade of International Rules matches at youth level.
“It was a great example of how the game can be played, it was tough, skillful with great sportsmanship,” Mr Sheehan said.
Barassi Medals, recognising the best and fairest players in each team, were awarded to Australia’s David Myers and Ireland’s Pearce Hanley.
Australia now holds the Peter McDermott Cup, after Ireland won the last three series.
Final scores: Australia 2.6.15 (45) defeated Ireland 1.6.6 (30)
Scorers:
Australia – Normington (12 points), Sellar (7), Hawksley (5), Rioli (4), Gibbs (3), Masten (3), Hawkins (3), Reimers (3), Petterd (3), Schmidt (1), Millar (1).
Ireland – Hanley (14), O’Rourke (5), McAdam (3), Cullivan (3), McGoldrick (3), O’Driscoll (2).
Best Players:
Australia – Gibbs, Myers, Masten, Petterd, Reid, Normington, Reimers, Hawksley.

Very good.
Great to see a tall defender get some recognition.
