View Full Version : McLaren
I would like to hear everyones thoughts on Dylan McLaren. I've seen every minute of the first three games and I think he's been pretty ordinary. I reckon Chris Bryan last year proved to be a better player for us than McLaren has so far. Do we really need him in the team as well as Deluca and French?

Chris Bryan proved last year he could ruck in 1 game. His first game against Sydney. After that he proved that he could not time his leap or compete around the ground. His lack of height and short arms and only average leap at best meant he rarely got his hand to the ball. Often he completely mis times things and the opposition ruck had his way with directing it down.
He worked hard in the pre season to bulk up and look to become more of a marking target. However he has completely dropped away in intensity in training recently and his form in the VFL is poor. He has not improved his ruck work but every once in a while he takes a strong grab and shows a bit of talent but his work ethic and efforts are not there. He is dispirited and looks a beaten man and unless he works harder he wont play 1 senior game this year. Being able to kick the ball a long way is great but unless you get it and take marks then its not really much use.
McLaren is a defensive oriented ruck who will jump hard right into his opponent and attempt to nullify them. He is smart with how he goes about it and does not give away frees and allows us to be competitive. He is working okay around the ground and his kicking has been quite good. Certainally not the worst player on the weekend and if he played like that every week I would be very happy.
Barnaby French was very sore on the weekend in his lower back after getting hurt against Freo and did not have his best game. Competed hard but lacked agility abd his jumping was down. Both these blokes are following instructions from the coaches as to where to position themeselves.

Do you have anything positive to say about anyone?:thumbsd:
Yes we do need him in the team as back up to French, who can't do it on his own. We might not have won the spoon last year if French hadn't missed all those games. He's kicked 3 good goals and taken some good grabs and competes hard.

Mclaren did a fantastic job in the second half he ran his guts out to get to contests and competed admirably IMO.
When he layed that tackle on Luke Ablett to force him through the behind posts and save a certain goal and then as the ball was rebounded to the other end he ran the length of the field to take that contested mark in the goal square and kick the goal the result was a 12 point turn around in only his 3rd game for us.
He played a major part in our second half come back and IMO was our best big man on the ground certainly in the second half and payed his way plus some.
I even considered giving him 1 vote but ended up giving him an honourable mention. So in answer to your question Yes we do need him in our side as he will only get better as he gets used to playing in our side.:thumbsu:

I reckon he'll be a 10 year player for us. Looks great so far. Jumps pretty well. Looks good around the ground. Ruckman tend to hit their straps in their mid-late 20s. IMO, he could slowly improve into one of the best ruckman in the league by then.
I'm glad we have him.. :thumbsu:

McLaren has proven himself to be a better player than Bryan.
At training Bryan is always lagging behind, not pushing thorugh and working hard enough.
There is no question Bryan has tallent, but unless he gets fit he will not wear the Navy Blue jumper ahead of D.McLaren.
McLaren is a very good player. He has shown promise when given a chance, kicked a few good goals and does a lot of the ruck when French is playing as loose man in defence.
