A news release is out on the AFL site regarding Freo and our salary cap problems.

Freo has to pay a fine of $54K, an amount equal to our breach of the 2001 salary cap. We miss out on the pre-season draft and can't get Francis (no reference was made to the remaining players taking a pay cut to get Francis. We miss out on some draft picks in the 2002 national draft. Finally, we have a suspended penalty of missing out on our 1st and 2nd round draft picks (suspended I guess means we don't have to cop this last one).

The AFL believed that Freo did not make enough allowance for payments to players replacing injured players. That seems to be the main reason we will miss out on the pre-season draft.

Ouch!

Will we cop it on the chin, or is Cameron on the phone to the lawyers?

That suspended penalty means you have to have your books in order at the time the mid-season review of TPP's is done next year. Better hope not too many of your players on fixed contracts get injured...

I'd hate to see the state of the comp without it
All the rich clubs would get richer, and be able to afford the best players
All the poor clubs would be dead.
