Whats happening to this guy? is he really that bad that he cant get a game, is he a waste of another top 10 pick? If we are playing sporn ahead of him how bad is he.Like to know what others think?

mate i hope this is not a serious post. just because someone is not playing in the seniors does not automaticall mean he is bad. JR is a young kid who the coaches are happy to let develop in the reserves for now. JR is a good solid player, will not be a superstar. he is good, but at the moment, the selection panel do not believe that his form in the ressies has been god enough for him to be elevated into the seniors. give the boy some bloody time before you call him bad!

Thought he was injured again. There were some positives in the game a couple of weeks ago.

Audas and Jeremias, find a chat room. This forum is a public place for discussion. There's no room for personal insults and petty squabbling.

Back on topic....

I find myself questioning Pagan's intentions with drafting Russell. He could very well be a gun player. I'm not writing him off. But after already drafting an 'athlete' the year before, it seemed odd to go down the same road twice. Personally, I thought we needn't a Monfries type of player more than JR.

Then again, maybe he knew about Marc Murphy in the 2005 draft? :p

He is finding the ball more than last year. And is bigger.

But he still fumbles and makes shocking decisions under pressure. I saw mitchell give him a bake a couple of weeks ago and he nodded acknowledgement while mitchell was looking at him, then shook his head as if "i cant believe it" when mitchell looked away. i remember seeing him walk off last year after betts kicked a bag and he was all smiles and laughing and joking, and he had just had an absolute shocker himself.

Dont know if any of that means he is kidding himself but it worries me. I would prefer to see him show some realistic perspective about his game. that would indicate to me that he was desperate to improve it. Near enough is good enough will see him turn into Ron Deiulio - who is exactly who he reminds me of at the moment (although he is taller than Ron).

I think we take for granted that all kids find there feet at AFL level relatively quickly, let alone kids that have to leave there family and friends and travel interstate to live and play AFL football.

Maybe he is homesick or just having trouble settling into Melbourne that has a flow on effect to his performance on the track and at game time?

Give the kid some time, his body is still not ready for the rigours of AFL footy yet anyway.

Not every kid takes to ALF footy like a duck to water.

Not to worried about JR. Is a good kid who will just take a bit longer. Looked like he was going to break through early in the pre season but was not given much of an opportunity and has dropped away a little and not quite playing as well as he can in the VFL.
Just has to sort out his role there a little more. Lacks a bit of confidence and the physical side to his game and the decision making. Reminds me of Kade a little early on. Once they gain confidence and feel they like belong and come out of there shell they develop quickly but until they iron a few things out they look a little lost.

Not all players develop so quickly.

Yeah, I'll give him time before judging him. Let him grow abit and get some experience in the VFL, hopefully he can improve throughout the season and challenge for senior selection later this year or next year.

Giving him time to develop his frame and his game, then he may turn out well for us. Time will tell.

Was going to write the same thing and then noticed that you beat me to the punch Mojo. Liked the look of him last night against the Hawks, and i'm sure given the time to develop, like we did with Kade, he could turn into a pretty handy footballer for us.

Seen him at the game last night, he got very very little game time, much like his first game. Works hard with running up and down the ground and I was almost out of his seat cheering when it looked like he had kicked that goal but he just missed.

Played 64 min for 4 posessions.

As a point of comparision, Nathan Foley from Tiges got 17touches in 66min.

I know posessions mean little, so take from that what you will.

Means nothing because he put his body on the line again even after he was cleaned up by Croad's elbow. Brought down Roughead in a great tackle, put a great bump on Vandenburg which Brereton praised and as hu$$ey noted just missed that attempt on goal.

Jordan will be a player but needs to put on more muscle like Walker and on occasions he will be outbodied in his first two seasons because he still lacks strength. And he isn't afraid to put his head over the ball unlike Egan. ;)

A good selection by Hughes and those so called Carlton supporters who bag him need their eyes checked! :thumbsd:

Can still see plenty of positives in this kid.

Only one big concern coming from friday night - anyone remember/see the passage where he watched a hawthorn play pick up a loose ball and stroll into open goal and nail it when the game was still in the balance, he is not slow!!!!!!!! and was closer to the ball, thought he'd at least move in the direction?

Wayne Hughes was going to take him no matter what in the draft so he must have something.

Saddington over-ran the ball, Dixon picked it up and Russell made the mistake of leaving Ladson to cover for Saddington. Dixon then handpassed straight over the top to Osborne who was in the clear and he sprinted not strolled in to kick the goal. There was no way he was going to catch Osborne once he had a five metre break on Russell who had his back to him. Even though he needs to keep his feet in a contest and get involved more in the play I think he showed enough to get another game.

I noticed that Murphy dropped a sitter of a chest mark in defence and Roughead roved the ball to just miss with a snap on the run.

Drop him!

JR goes alright, but as Ive said b4, from knowing the SA kids coming thru, I can't believe you took Russell over Monfries. Russell will become a handy player but nothing more really. He doesn't seem to be able to make the quick decision atm, lets hope he can improve there.

Went to ground too easy and fumbles under pressure. Looked a mile away from being an AFL player. Did they recruit him on one really good performance for SA vs Metro at the 'G'

He was highly rated because he has a broad range of attractive attributes.

Nice height, very quick, agile etc. Never been a big ball winner and has never really played midfield.

Doesn't need to be a huge ball winner. With his blistering pace he should be able to be damaging with 15-20 touches and break lines.

Will take time ala Kade Simpson. I'm willing to wait as he looked alright last Friday. Would love to see him collect 10-15 good touches tonight, all the best Russ!
