I had a look to see if this was already reported and couldn't find it so here goes;

Heard on the Good Oil (Mark Doran's shift on SEN) from Andy MAHER that he and other jurno's had lunch with Smorgen today. From Maher one of the Carlton board members has asked if they wished to see the Carlton clash strip that they are about to submit to the AFL commission. Any way they proceeded to show them an all White gurnsey with navy blue monogram (reverse of current jumper) there will be an addition of a blue panel running down the jumper from underneath both arm pits. Of course numbers will be in navy

Interesting, any thoughts?

I'd prefer to keep just the original but I'm a realist and acknowledge that things will change. To me this is the best scenario.

Carlton Unveils a ‘Clash’ Guernsey
4:28:08 PM Thu 20 April, 2006
carltonfc.com.au
At a media briefing at MC Labour Park today, Carlton Football Club President, Mr Graham Smorgon, announced that Carlton would adopt an ‘alternate guernsey’ as per AFL rules from next season. Mr Smorgon said the Carlton Football Club Board had decided at the Board Meeting on Tuesday night to comply with the AFL requirements in relation to all clubs having an alternate guernsey from 2007 and had also approved a design.

“Following advice from the AFL in relation to all clubs requiring an alternate guernsey from next season, we have been working with our apparel sponsor Nike to design a guernsey that will retain the key elements of the Carlton guernsey, while complying with the AFL requirements. This issue was first considered over 12 months ago and we have continued to work with Nike and consulted with our players during this period,” Mr Smorgon said at the media briefing today.

“The Board considered the AFL’s position in relation to this matter and we agreed that the Carlton Football Club has a number of important issues that we are facing and while wearing an alternate guernsey is a very emotional issue, it will not impact on these other issues, particularly as the team will wear the guernsey in between two and four away matches a season, commencing in 2007,” added Mr Smorgon.

The AFL has advised all Clubs that they will be required to have an alternate guernsey from 2007 and that teams with a dark coloured main guernsey will be required to have a light coloured alternate guernsey. The Carlton ‘clash’ guernsey unveiled today is the reverse of the Carlton guernsey, it is white with a navy CFC insignia on the chest, with navy panels on each side.

Following discussions with the AFL, Carlton will be required to wear this alternate guernsey in away matches against Fremantle, Port Adelaide, Melbourne and St Kilda. The Blues will not be required to wear the alternate guernsey in the traditional ‘blockbuster’ matches against Essendon, Collingwood and Richmond.

“While the navy guernsey is the true Carlton guernsey, the alternate guernsey, combined with the white shorts, will ensure we have a suitable playing uniform for those few matches each season where our colours are similar to the opposition. This will certainly be a real benefit in the heat of battle on the ground, making it much easier for both teams and I am sure will also make it easier for the supporters,” said Carlton Vice-Captain Nick Stevens.

i think it looks good for an alternate clash jumper.

A simple re-working of the jumper and not a total re-design of the best jumper in the history of the AFL. The CFC and the colour Navy Blue is still on the jumper and that's the most important thing. :thumbsu:

Not that hard to design a new jumper Collingwood if you have a little imagination and show some initiative!

Good looking jumper IMHO. The white looks a lot like the "whites" the Australian Cricket team are wearing at the moment. It could be picture though.

I'd prefer to keep just the original but I'm a realist and acknowledge that things will change. To me this is the best scenario.

But there is no reason for change!

The main article found on afl.com.au reveals that we will have to wear the guernsey in away matches against Fremantle, St Kilda, Port Adelaide, and Melbourne, but I am currently perplexed as to how we actually 'clash' with the majority of these teams. The only team we actually bear slight resemblance to in design is Melbourne, and even then I think my brain might just be able to handle the current difference in colour.

This is just another attempt by greedy Demetriou and his cronies to extract more revenue from the average bonehead supporter.

With all due respect, we submitted the same thing to the AFL that Carlton did... our current jumper, just reversed... and it was rejected :S...

Imagination is not a word i would associate with Carlton's clash strip, HOWEVER, i think its fantastic.

If you've got a jumper that is 50% black and 50% white, then if you invert that, it remains the same equation. If you've got a jumper that is 95% dark blue and 5% white, and invert that, then it's a completely different story.

I've seen the Collingwood jumper inverted and it's probably not quite a significant enough difference to allow it.

The Collingwood training jumpers with the Magpie on a white jumper looks really good. Maybe add some black pinstripes to that.

I'm happy with, thought blue on white would look better than it actually does, white's not bright enough IMO. But still like it and think its good.

looks great ... kept our navy blue and white colours and will be good to see something different out there a few times a year (glad we didn't opt for the silver design that had been bandied about)

i'll be the first to admit that i WAS not in favour to have a clash strip, but after viewing the jumper, i would be happy to see the blues run out in that, my only concern is, lets hope we dont get a wet rainny day:thumbsu:

I like it, but why we would promote it with No. 22 seems a bit strange.

Chambers is hardly our marquee player.

A good improvisation & you wouldnt expect much backlash from within.:thumbsu:

The Carlton Shop probably won't be getting a lot of requests for number 22 so maybe it's just the most disposable.

I understand number 16's are sold out for the purpose of cermonnial burnings.

Maybe they chose Chambers' because they know there'll always be a nice clean version out on the field?

Excellent choice given the directive from on high - resolves the potential problem when playing the teams mentioned previously without going overboard.
Kudos to the many on here who have proposed this version in the past.

Well hang on here.

The jumper looks great,
but i hope it is still blue shorts and socks.

If it is an away uniform i hope we don't end up with white and white
(Kangaroos did it for a couple of years and it looked crap).

And the AFL aint Hugo Boss in the fashion world.

I think the article mentioned pairing it with white shorts.

No it is with white shorts because the clash jumper is worn by the "away" side.
It won't look as bad as the Kangaroos though because they also have white socks, we have the good old navy blue.

Really like the Carlton clash jumper for 2007 and beyond, although it's going to take a little while to get used to them running around in it.

All in all, I good alternative to an already great jumper.

the afl with clubs should decide which team should wear white shorts,
not every game needs a team in white shorts eg carlton versus sydney

when we play geel, kang, st k and coll in 2006 we should wear navy and they wear white shorts

Personally, as a non-Blues supporter, I think it looks great. Other teams should take the Blues lead, and just have a reversal for their clash jumper.

For example, Essendon would have a Red jumper, with a Black sash. Richmond would have a Gold jumper, with a Black sash, etc...

You are right, it is simple stuff and some club presidents need to get off their high horse and look for the marketing opportunities that come from having an alternative jumper, rather than saying "why should we change our jumper".

Like most, I don't really want a "clash" jumper, but unlike those small-minded simpletons from Eddiewood realise it is inevitable. I have been pushing the simple colour reversal for a while, the white jumper looks great. If it is worn with white shorts though, it will look a bit insipid. I see no reason why we can't wear navy shorts, when was the last time you saw the Swans in white shorts?

With that much white, there's no reason it cannot be worn with navy shorts on every occasion.
Any clash in shorts-navy vs. black or even navy vs. dark blue-would be totally offset by the extreme contrast of the almost all-white top. A uniform with the reversed top, navy shorts and navy sox would look almost as good as the traditional Carlton uniform. I suppose if the AFL ever address sox-clashes (ala incorrect umpiring decisions) a few teams might have to address alternate sox in the future.
It's nice to see a club with 100+ years of tradition incorporate that tradition into something that, while not particularly desired, looks fantastic!
