View Full Version : If anyone still wants to downgrade Gillespies' innings, consider this
spell_check

Coming into the match, Gillespies' batting average was 15.69.
His score of 201 was 12.81 times that average.
Now, lets say if Adam Gilchrist scored 12.81 times his average.
48.80 times 12.81 is 625 runs.
No one would question how good an innings of that magnitude, even it was Bangladesh.

For the series, Brett Lee got 2.678 times his normal average, so why isn't anyone talking his series up?
EDIT - Oops, that was bowling. Never mind then.

It's like Glenn McGrath saying his 61's like 500 compare to Hayden's :D

I'd rate Hayden getting a 500 as far more probable than McGrath getting another 61.

If anyone doesn't rate Gillespie's 201* they are kidding themselves. It's one of the best innings seen!

Yep. Is close to my favourite cricketing moment. It has surpassed McGrath's innings, but is still behind Steve Waugh's 200 against the West Indies and the 99 World Cup semifinal (I can't see that ever being beaten)

Just quietly, yes, but don't tell anyone :p

i heard someone make a good point today - Hayden has had 8-10 innings against the bangers and hasn't scored a century
to bat for that long against any opposition is a heroic feat...for a tailender it is truly phenomenal
the biggest benefit is the confidence it will give Dizzy when he bats against stronger opposition

Saw an official match report in the paper saying his average before this test was about 18 something

And Bradman 1279
Right... let's re-cap the points made:
Jason Gillespie averaged 15.64 with the bat over his first 70 Tests
The same Jason Gillespie follows up this modest record with an innings of 201*
And you don't this says anything about the standard of opposition he might have faced?

So far there have been fifty Australian innings against Bangladesh, including 5 each from Hayden and Ponting. Gillespie is the only one to score a double century.

It was an incredible innings, but i wasnt suprised he batted that long, hes always been a more than decent lower order batsman.
Hes done it before (as in batted for a long time), on the subcontinent too.

Despite the opposition, 201 not out against any team is a fair effort - particularly considering his batting prowess.

Maybe he's been underperforming all these years. What a waste of talent;)
