Godfrey itching to return

After a wretched pre-season, Simon Godfrey has broken into the Melbourne line-up for his first game of the year and will bolster the Demons' running brigade against Sydney this Sunday.

The reliable run-with player is enthusiastic about the team's chances at the SCG and is glad to be back in the side.

"I had ankle surgery straight after last season, then did my medial ligament which was six or seven weeks out and then a week after I came back I rolled the ankle I had surgery on," Godfrey says of his pre-season from hell.

"(But) it's great to be back in and hopefully we can get a win on the board this week."

Godfrey has regained full fitness after two games with Sandringham and admits it has been difficult watching the first three games from the sidelines.

"Watching them struggle does hurt and you want to do what you can to help out, so I'll certainly be doing my bit and doing what the coach wants me to do," he says.

"The mood around the club's been really positive - we know that we've got a good list, we've got a good bunch of blokes and we're a mature list - and we're definitely better than what we've shown, so once we get a win on the board I'm pretty sure we'll put it together pretty quick.

"We put it together for a half the week before and three quarters last week, so I think we're definitely not too far away from putting a good win together."

Known for his endurance, Godfrey has no problem playing a tagging role and is gearing himself up for a productive season.

"My type of role that's good for the team is shutting down a player - usually the best player in the opposition - that's what I'm good at, so I might as well use that ability as best as I can," he says.

"I think every year's a big year, but it's my seventh year at the club and it's time for me to show what I've been here for. Obviously every year you've been at a club you get better and a bit wiser, so I think my best footy is yet to come."

I for one didnt know he had that bad a pre-season, makes you wonder why Danners is so keen to rush him back?

I dont mind him playing against Sydney, his kind of game.

I didn't really care when he was playing for Sandy and showing the young players how to go hard at it, but now that he's playing I can't wait until he is delisted.

Or maybe he'll show us all up and be the next Shane Tuck.... or maybe not.

I'll give him a week to see how he goes. I take it then he'll be in the side, if Bate doesn't play it is a joke. Teams are released later tonight aren't they?

Can't hold it against him. He has to take whatever bone they throw at him, because we all know that Daniher is taking him along when he leaves.

I would be thrilled if he actually successfully tags a player, completely shutting them out of the game and trying to avoid kicking at all costs. The way we've been playing lately, him chip kicking short to a target could result in the highest number of turn-overs recorded in a game, ever!

And you just know that if we win, he won't get dropped. Even thought he will be utterly useless against the Roos at the G.
