View Full Version : Why is our midfield getting smashed?

Something I've picked up on and I'm not using stats to back me up.

The rot seemed to start from the last qtr in the Adel game. Since then we've been smashed in the middle, continually.

Vs Richmond we got caned in the middle and around the stoppages.

Ditto v Nth Melb.

Each game I've been screaming for some hard-nuts to be placed in the middle to turn the tide, such as Chick, Waters, Stenglein and Embley.

Why have we been getting smashed?

Secondly, our delivery into the forward line from the last qtr V Adelaide has been shocking.

Saying all of that, good teams find a way to win even when they aren't playing well. we've managed to do that, so congratulations to the lads.

around the ground our midfielders were dominant today.

At the stoppages it was pretty 50/50. It wasn't Cox's best rucking performance - but it wasn't a poor rucking performance by any means and he was once again brilliant around the ground.

I didn't see the Richmond game but despite having a crap team they actually have an allright midfield, as do the Kangaroos - they're not the sort of teams who you can just expect to dominate at the stoppages. To do so you have to be at the top, or very close to, of your game, which we haven't been - but we by no means are playing poorly at the stoppages, maybe 80% as effective as we could be, which therfore means we aren't going to dominate them.

I think when COusins gets back and everyone starts to click into gear more so we'll be fine.

I actually think it's not a bad thing having a slow start to the season (especially when your still undefeated despite a slow start). You tend to find that team's playing at 100% of their ability from round 1 (like the Bulldogs this year, and same as St Kilda in 04 and WCE in 03) tend to slip away over the last 2 months of the season as it takes a significant toll on their bodies. Very few teams can be at the peak of their game from round 1 to the end of the season.....

In clearances we are.

At half time it was 20 to 10 in Norths favour.

i still think ur team is being help together by your top notch golden slipper midfield ..... you have no power forwards its the multiple entries in the forward and ur midfielders great attack on the ball in the defence that gets you running out....fro mthe back thats winning you games....

lets see how you would go against the doggies thats what i wanna seee...when do u play them?

a team who also have "no power forwards" but can apparantly play, just like us, oh and how are Freo's wonderful KPP's going?

Judd was back to his best today, but he wasn't that flash in the first three games. Neither was cuz. We aren't going terribly, and its a good sign that we can still win games when losing centre clearances. We'll move up a gear or two over the next few rounds hopefully.

If they got the supply and delivery your midfield provides they would be competing with each other for the coleman medal.

Everyone is going to try and shut our midfield down. Adelaide did it, Richmond did it, now Kangas.

Very few teams will try head-to-head. Exceptions would be Dogs and Brisbance.

I wish we would have. Our mf set up is far too defensive, so whilst we won some clearance in the first half, we don't have the class in there to make teams pay. The difference today was the extra quality that you guys had delivering the ball to your forwards. Well played.

Are you suggesting that Bell, Haselby, Carr, Headland and co. simply don't compare to the Eagles mids?

Who needs to suggest it? It's bloody obvious...I'd keep Hase and you can have the rest for Braun and Embley?

Since when is the eagles midfield getting smahsed?

On most occasion this season we have been dominating easily and on some occasions its been 50/50 and thats about it....The term smashing is totally unwarrented.

Okay....

Let me re-phrase my comments.

Since the last qtr v Adelaide, we have been smashed in the centre clearances and around the stoppages.

Rewatch the the last 3 games and tell me I'm wrong. Look up the stats if you will and tell me I'm wrong.

Cheers

Um, no thanks

We'll just stick with what we've got

For a team whose "midfield is getting smashed" and that "has no forwards" (as everyone keeps telling us) West Coast are doing pretty well so far this season !:p

Judd v Brisbane was an aberration.....

We're still getting towelled up in the midfield / stoppages.
