How'd Dave Mackay play?

Chargers were behind by 27 pts at one stage and not looking like making much of a contest of it. Sandy were too quick and hungry for the first half but didnt hurt the Chargers on the scoreboard. Chargers were getting murdered out of the centre and across half back, but when they finally got their game going they were too strong and won by about 7 pts. Umpires were VERY ordinary which didnt help either side, had everyone confused at times.

Very good win. They were down by 4 goals at half time, and I think they might have copped a decent spray about that as well.

How'd Dave Mackay play? Hopefully one of his mates posts here and has some info. He pretty much collapsed on the ground during the last qtr, I think he was just winded more than anything, and thankfully he was able to walk off with help of trainers a min or so later but not a nice thing to see thats for sure and hopefully the kid is alright.

agree neta. I Thought the turnig point came in the 3rd when welsh changed the forward structure, everybody pushing forward leaving only 2 players inside 50 .NO half back line to contend with. ,problem solved. VERRY GOOD COACHING

You are absolutely right about the spray at half time Footyman. No one from the public was allowed into the rooms at the big break but you could hear Rohan Welsh giving the boys a few home truths. Not sure what happened to young McKay, he seemed to have a leg injury, then he went down like he was badly winded. Also lost another player early on, can't remember who it was but the ankle was heavily strapped and went to hospital.

lost batsanis early and was on crutches on the sidelines..not sure what it was but he was icing it.. maybe just a bad cork.. McKay looked really bad and the stretcher came out for him but i think i saw him walking around having a laugh at the end of the game to no serious injury which is good.. will be interesting to hear the verdict of batsanis' injury.. anyone have any news??

neatagreen: on the umpiring, I watched the match standing next to the umps' observer and one of the umps was exceptional (the quick one who was like lightning to stoppages) and will find himself promoted to the VFL very soon, I've been told. However, he was the one guilty of that strange free kick and 50m penalty that nearly ruined all Oakleigh's good work in the final term.

On Batsanis: he's got an injured ankle. Big loss for the Chargers as he wasn't a private school boy and they need him over the next two months.

I thought Matt Neratzoglou's move to chf was the difference in the third term. At 194cm and 86cm he looks a likely type indeed. Clean hands and a good kick, many scouts would have put a tick beside his name yesterday.

Other players who caught my eye: Nick Smith (quick hands), Sam Pickett (tough), Muzi Ozdemir (good skills), Adam Watson (good defender), Will Debruin (courageous), Sam Sheldon (provided dash in midfield), Robbie Gray (good off halfback after playing forward the first two rounds), Ramy Melhem (good last term but a front runner... lightning fast).

he has some bruising on the lower leg but nothing too serious. hopefully he wont miss more than just the one week but is still a chance to play next round, so thats good news for chargers.

good win by oakleigh too. great second half from mcwhinney after being shifted from half-back to full-forward.

How did Johnston play?

I know he kicked a goal, but how did he do elsewhere around the ground?

Also, Hugh Sandilands is a promising player for the Chargers, does anybody know how he went yesterday?

The only umpire who was a shocker was No.13. They all seemed to be out of position to me and missed a hell of a lot of obvious holding and scragging frees. What about the 50m penalty for lobbing the ball back to the player who was paid a free kick. I think the goose may have made that one up himself. Was this the umpire who is pressing for senior selection? Very frustrating for the players who often didn't know which way the free kick was being awarded. Shame about Batsanis, he is a tough, smart footballer but gets injured a lot.

Yes neata, the ump who called the 50m pen was the one pushing for the VFL call up. I thought he was pretty good apart from that decision.

Tomi Johnston played well in patches but a player of that size (176cm, 63kg) will always find it tough against the big boys.

Tricky Ricky2: Yes, Hugh Sandilands is a promising player. He is 189cm but plays a lot taller, even going into the ruck at times. He moves well and rarely coughs it up by foot. He has a good left foot kick on him.

Personally I think Andrew Ainger is the key to the chargers this season, he is a big target and shows good leadership throughout the team. He should keep up the good form, if the Chargers a going to be a strong contender this year Ainger is going to have to keep playing good footy for them.
