View Full Version : If we hadn't recruited Judd, would we be where we are now??

That sounds a little cryptic, because you can't look at the question as "take Judd out of the line-up, would we be competitive" Of course we would be. But that's not the question.
But if we hadn't have recruited Judd (say for arguments sake we were stripped of our Round 1 pick as well so there is no one is he's please) to do you think our team/squad would have improved as sharply as it has??
What's the difference ?? I can already here people say.... Well the difference is the effect he has around the club on the other's as well. By just taking him out of the line-up you are only replacing him on the field but the effect in terms of self confidence and belief in the team can't be taken away. Since he has come to the club we have seen other footballers improve out of sight - Hunter, Glass, Cox just to name a couple. Would that have just happened naturally?? Possibly, but maybe not to the extent.
I think what he bought to the other players at the club was the self belief that you can be anything you want to be out on the field.
I think the wheel's were already in motion to moving towards the top but i think he has accelerated that process greatly. In all honesty, if you think back to the end of 2001, my thought were that i knew there was some talented guys in the team but i thought as an all round group we were going to struggle to move forward to premiership contendors with this group.
But the arrival of Judd in 02 changed everything for us i thought. I think he made people want to work that little bit harder and push the teams towards the top....
It's a hard question, and probably a stupid one :P but what do you guys think....??

It had a lot more to do with Worsfold.
It's kind of like asking the same question about the Chicago Bulls turning from scrubbers to genuine contenders in the early 90s- was it Jordan coming of age, or was it Phil Jackson?
If we hadnt recruited Judd, obviously we wouldn't be where we are now simply because as an individual, Judd is a flat out brilliant player and a gamewinner.
As you say though, individuals can have strange effects on playing groups. Say you're an eagle in '02 and '03, there's this 18 year old kid who comes along and is making most of the side look very ordinary at training. If you're a 23, 24 year old Eagle watching that, that has to have an effect on the way you go about things and the way you approach your football.

No doubt he has improved us in alot of ways...not just on the field.
I know for fact that if we didnt select Judd that Dal Santo was actually next on the list to be chosen so we wudnt of lost a massive amount really, well atleast not as huge as people think.

I love your little 'I know for a fact' calls, they make me feel almost as important. :thumbsu:

I think it's very interesting... we would have had Hodge instead, probably, who is probably going to be just as good as a player but has taken slightly longer to develop.
But we'd now have captain Wirrpanda.
I think the improvement as a squad has certainly come more from Worsfold than Judd. It's hard to know the kind of impact he has had on the playing group because none of us are in the inner circle at the club.
Yeah, no doubt Woosha had a big impact on the team, the players respect him and want to play well for him, but Judd has definately made a big difference as well. He has definately given a lot to the club in the short time he has been here.

Someone said this the other day. If St. Kilda had drafted Juddy second, and we had passed on Ball, presuming the Dockers were always going to take Polak, then St. Kilda would have Juddy and Ball and possibly Dal Santo, depending if we went for him or Clarke.
now that would be one hell of a midfield!

Wouldn't we have taken Polak if we missed Judd and passed on Ball?
On the other hand, if Hawthorn hadn't taken Hodge, and he was still available at 6 then we could have had Judd and Hodge and also, the Saints pass on Ball and he is still available when we took Seaby then we could have JUDD HODGE BALL! and ALSO if Dal Santo was still available when we picked Hansen, we could have had JUDD HODGE BALL AND DAL SANTO!!
Wow, drafting is so much easier when you do it like that...

I believe that Worsfold has made a huge difference on the way we are playing and Judd has made an impact as well, but not as much as Woosha. Worsfold has brought out the best in his players and that is something that Judge could not do. Judd has made a difference to our game plan and our midfield would not be the best in the league without him. He is just so fantastic to watch and I am sure the players respond the Judd as much as we do as spectators.
Plus the dumping of the "dogs breakfast" has made a slight difference in my own opinion anyway.

I was saying what likely would have happened i wasn't making ridiculous conclusions like you. Woodhouse has said that if Juddy wasn't available they would have gone for X. Clarke or Dal Santo, meaning the dockers would have taken Polak, and St Kilda would have had Ball and Juddy.
I was saying what could of happened, had St Kilda picked Juddy second.
a good post though :thumbsd:
