It goes against all that we are used to, but how would you feel if your international and state cricketers came out in shorts?

Dean Jones tried it a few years ago.

After all, it is a summer sport, and all those long hours in the field make it desirable to wear something that is more comforatable and appropriate

Obviously batters would wear long pants, so that the pads wouldn't rub agaisnt their skin, but fielders could wear shorts very easily.

It's not as if a fielder has to do a lot of diving over the course of a day. A fielder at deep long on, in a test match might not even field a ball for a whole day! A footballer would spend far more time falling on his knees than a cricketer would. And as for the summer heat burning the skin? One answer: Sunscreen

I think that it's a good idea. I used to play cricket for Tatura, and in the Goulburn Valley, the summers can get really dry and hot, and there were days that you would like to have shorts on (althought sometimes the grounds were so dry, that you would take a bit of skin of if you diving for a catch or saving a 4).

But, in elite cricket. it's something that they should consider because of player comfort.

It would not bother me if they came out in shorts. I know the Vics did it a few seasons back, and I had no problem with it.

I doubt if there would be rule requiring the wearing of long pants. After all, Victoria came out in shorts a few years ago.

I'd love to see the Aussie come out in shorts without telling anyone and then act like it's no big deal. It isn't a big deal, but I'm sure the media would kick up a big fuss over nothing.

i used to wear shorts when i played junior cricket.

The only problem is that when ur batting with shorts on, its not very good support for your thigh pad and it reveals the flesh of you leg to the leather of the ball.

Also, when your fielding its easy to graze your knee when sliding on the turf without pants on, with pants on its rare you do.

I'm a bit of a traditionalist. I'd prefer to see the players out in the long pants instead of shorts. I know it might get warm in the summer, and maybe inconvenient for the players comfort, but I say keep the shorts for the footy and the long johns for cricket.

Bucks is right, when I played wearing shorts - it was uncomfortable with the pads and gear on.

Has anyone thought about introducing pantaloons? :D

Women wore culottes (sp?) until a few years ago. I didn't hear any of them complain when they went to trousers.

These days the only time I see any cricketers in shorts is in those friendly celebrity matches. I find it hard to take any cricketer seriously when playing in shorts.

Tradition and player comfort in most conditions favour the trousers.

As a traditionalist I don't favour the game going sans-culotte, mind you last year I though the kiwi test team adding a hint of black to their 'whites' looked good.
