Maryborough Rovers U17 have appointed two new coaches and have had a few classy kids from Maryborough FC join them in J.Hooper, A.Jardine & R.O'Shea. Also add the inclusion of both Hind boys into that and there is a strong belief they will be playing finals this season.

That's great but there are 6 teams that are pretty certain they will be playing finals. Harcourt, Avoca, Brook, Talbot, Rovers and Maldon. I'm amazed the talk about Maldon is minimal as they have brought in some seriously talented players and from what I have heard have been training with great numbers since before Christmas.

I'll go one better than saying they will be playing finals, they'll be top 3. Proven major league players coming into a district league will definitely cause match up head aches.

I would advise all teams in the finals race to to not get too far ahead of themselves and go by the old saying of "Take it one week at a time."

Trentham under 17s will be heading to barwon this saturday for a practice match against there under 18s. Trentham have recruited a gun player from the calder cannons. He is a handy on baller and kills it up forward. Definitly will be on of the top 5 players in season 2008.

Speaking of teams talking up finals chances. I have spoken to a few Trentham players and they are very happy in the new coach and new recruits. A few of them are apparently guns and the talk out of Trentham is that finals are in the equation for 2008.

We will know in a couple of weeks whether it's all puff. Young and Turnbull are very good footballers and I have heard a few of the other clearances in are more than handy. Don't expect an easy 4 points is the talk coming from that direction anyway.

That is some blind optimism. They were a mile off the pace last year and their lack of transfer in would suggest they will still be battling it out in the bottom 4.

I guess the talk is minimal because they are an out of town side and we simply dont hear anything about them. Majority, if not all posters on here are from the Maryborough area.

Maldon players that I have spoken to are confident they will go this year and have recruited very well. However they have missed out of a couple of players that they hoped to get and the loss of James back to Hepburn was unexpected. They always have a massive home ground advantage so if they can win most games at Maldon they should get in.

Personally I think Brook will be the yarkstick at this stage. They have added a couple more on-ballers but have addressed their major weakness of height. Avoca should hold, Harcourt (hopefully) will drop off with a few senior losses, Rovers due to some strong recruiting will now push up into premiership calculations but they still need to gel, Talbot should improve & Maldon will obviously improve. My current ladder prediction would be:

Carisbrook
Avoca
Harcourt
Talbot
Rovers

Maldon
Dunolly
Newstead
Trentham
Royal Park
Campbells Creek

Not a bad top 5. Bottom 6 might be a little off though. As long as the teams down there become more competitive, we'll all be happy.

Bushy will finish above Dunolly, Trentham and Creek. Bushy will not be that bad. Their numbers are better at training this year. It will be interesting to hear how they fare against Natte this weekend.

Newstead don't seem to have that many leaving. A few are coming in too so that is a wait and see in my book. Retiring list might be long though.

Trentham would be best to focus on winning 1 to 5 games as would Dunolly. Trentham has the same amount of ins than outs so they should at least maintain.

Dunolly is young and inexperienced so I would guess they will be hit and miss this year. More ins than outs is a good thing. Took a beating at the hands of Serp the other night so hopefully that doesn't knock their confidence for 6.

I'm not so sure about Creek even finishing the season.

I'm not so sure about Creek even finishing the season.

You could be on the money there ear, an email was sent to clubs today from the Creek executive saying that as of Sunday 24th march, President Daryl Best, Secretary Sue Merlo and Treasurer Wayne Quinton have resigned their positions with the club and will cease to be involved in the running of the club.

Something to do with certain people telling them that it was time for the “Old Guard” to move on. Sounds like things aren't too rosey at Creek.

We are happy to be the under dogs in all honesty. We've had a good pre-season and are closing in on some more signings. I'm tipping Rovers treasurer will be handing out plenty more than what we will after the game next Friday. Hopefully that serves them well.

It's a shame to see these custodians of the club move on or be ousted.

Sometimes generational change can be good and sometimes bad, but certainly knowing Besty and Quincey, I would hate to see them cut ties altogether with a club they have put their heart and soul into for a period well in excess of a decade to my knowledge.

My only advice to the incoming committee - make sure the new treasurer is the most prudent and alert person possible.

You can read into that what you want.

That is ridiculous King Rich! I think you will find Rovers have been extremely fortunate with their recruitment this season and are definetly not spending $$$. All recruits have come for other reasons than the $$$. The club is going ahead strongly and these recruits can see this and are happy to jump aboard. Some quality players are on either $0 or taking big cuts to see success. More than I can say for some other clubs. I think King Rich you will find one player in your side will be taking home more than the Rovers side put together next Friday night!

Success might be a contributing factor but there are better chances in the local area for success IMO and Clark is leaving one of them.

An which one player might that be??? Unless you are ignorant of the facts at Rovers or just spinning a line for Big Footy I believe you need to get ur head out of the clouds. Hind is on $300 a game. Fact. Clark would be pushing up towards that figure as well..... according to what he claims to be offered from other clubs. Rovers side from last year would have minimum 6 players being paid. + I know of 2-3 of your other recruits that are definately on cash. I'm no maths scholar but I believe that will come in well and truly over Talbot's budget!

Speaking with the executive/committee members and coaching staff inside the club, they got Clark for a lot less than most clubs had apparently offered. This is due to the convenience of training in Maryborough, the exciting playing list and the family aspect of the club. The Club have said he is by no means a $ chaser and where very impressed in the way he addressed the issue. Clark is believed to be on no-where near what apparently Hind is on ($300). King Rich not sure where you get you info from? You seem to know a lot more of what is going on inside the club than the M.Rovers committee do by the sounds of your comments.

As for John Hind... certainly no grudge there. He has a young family to support and the financial offer from Rovers was too good to pass up. He is welcome back at our club whenever he wants and will be a great asset to the Rovers Football Club. As for Clark, has been a good servant to the Talbot FC over the years. No grudge from him leaving.. he can do as he pleases. I didn't lose much sleep over it. So lets assume Hind and Clark are taking up conservatively $450 a week..... Who do you think at Talbot would be earning more than that??? No single player is anywhere near that I would think! Our coach would be our highest paid player and he'd struggle to get near that.

So your original claim would appear to be incorrect and I have only picked out two players let alone the other 6-12 players who would be on coin. You seem to know a lot more about Talbot's workings than their committee as well apparently! :)

Talbot 2's are shaping up well. Might be a bit underdone first up though. They have recruited well and have a new coaching staff which should help them out! ;) I would think they will be thereabouts come September.

Quality post Thirsty. It makes no sense and there is no point denying they have expanded the budget compared to last year.

The days of the so called bought flag are almost gone because everyone is paying players. Rovers don't need to be ashamed about the fact that they have gone out and recruited well with decent money. Hind is a good investment because he's coached more flags than the other 21 starting players have won collectively. If they want to win flags, they need guys who know how to do it and that means spending cash.

Royal Park did offer Clark good money and the convenience of training/playing in Maryborough applies there also.

Money is just the way footy is going. The risk is if you don't pay it, somebody else will.

Worst comes to worst pay a hobo off the street some cash to sell some piss. Talbot had it a few years ago and we made a killing. Be mad to turn it down. What is the difference running a normal home game than running this anyway?? A couple more gatekeepers?? Get it done Rovers.

Fixture Change!

Dear MCDFNL Clubs & Media
Due to the ongoing drought, the Maryborough Castlemaine DFNL has been forced to make a fixture changes for next weekends Round 1 matches.
As a result, the amended Round 1 of the MCDFNL fixture for Round 1 will be as follows:

Maryborough Rovers v Talbot ? Princes Park Maryborough (No Change)
Saturday 5th April 9th 2008
Campbells Creek V Carisbrook - @ Campbells Creek (No change)
Maldon V Dunolly @ Maldon (No change)
Avoca V Royal Park @ Avoca (No change)
Trenthan V Newstead (Match has been reversed with fixture later in season ? will now be a Trentham FC home game)
It is expected that all Clubs will be co-operative with each other during this difficult period, which see?s some clubs being forced from their home ground through no fault of their own.

Trevor Field has put in a clearance to Natte! Has he ever played for another club other than Avoca?? Fair loss for Avoca.

He played on permit for Beaufort for about 8 matches back in 1990 and was leading their b&f when he left half way through the year. Would of thought trevor would be a bit old to play for another club as he is getting extremely close to 40. Does anyone think he could be thinking that there isn't enough room for him in Avoca's senior team and is to proud to drop down to the reserves?

Not in the slightest...still contributes alot to the afc on field

gibbo only played 2 quarters, kicked 2 goals 2, was more than servicable in his first hit out for the club. will take a big man to stop him this year...

I believe he may have even kicked 3.1 but I may be wrong. He only played 2 quarters as did a number of senior players. Good first hit out for the big man.

Yes he does still go alright and has been a great contributor to Avoca for many years.. Unfortunately though, Trev suffers from a little bit of figjamitis.

Due to his age Avoca tried to look after him a bit last year and rested him on the bench a bit, but Trev didn’t get it! He thought he should have been out there all of the game and took it as a bit of an insult.
Not sure if this has anything to do with him looking to go to Natte, but could have a bit to do with it.

Snippers,

Absolute crap what you wrote about Trevor. He has been a terrific servant of the Avoca FC and football in the area. Quality bloke both on and off field.

From my understanding he has decided to go to Natte for a change of scenery, Natte has not promised him anything but as he is friends with many of the troop there the move seems like a good one.

Good luck to him, Avoca FC will certainly miss him.

Your entitled to your opinion LFG, just as I am entitled to mine.

I don’t know what part you reckon was crap, I know it was fact, he told me so.

I agree with you, Trevor is a quality bloke and has been a terrific servant of the Avoca club. But IMO he does suffer from some Figjamitis. And that is also the opinion of many others. If you don’t agree with that assessment, then so be it.

Round 2 Fixture Change

Dear MCDFNL Clubs & Media,
Due to the ongoing drought and the subsequent closure of Hedges Oval (home ground of the Royal Park FC) the Maryborough Castlemaine DFNL has been forced to make a fixture change for Royal Parks Round 2 fixture.
As a result, the amended Round 2 of the MCDFNL fixture will be as follows:
Seniors
Saturday 12th April 2008

Dunolly V?s Campbells Creek @ Dunolly (No change)
Talbot V Maldon @ Talbot (No change)
Maryborough Rovers V Royal Park @ Maryborough Rovers (Match has been reversed with fixture later in season ? will now be a Maryborough Rovers FC home game)
Trentham V Avoca @ Trentham (No change)
Harcourt V Newstead @ Harcourt (No change)
The Royal Park FC has also had preliminary discussions with Newstead FC to make preliminary arrangements to also reverse their Round 4 game with Newstead should the club be unable to have their home ground in a playable condition by this date. The MCDFNL will advise further on this matter closer to the Round 4 ? 26th April date.

Round 1 - Friday 4th April
Rovers v Talbot
Saturday 5th April
Campbells Creek v Carisbrook
Maldon v Dunolly
Avoca v Royal Park
Newstead v Trentham
Bye - Harcourt

Rovers v Talbot and Newstead v Trentham are the two tough ones to pick.

We saw Creek first hand last week. They are deficient in a lot of areas but will be more competitive than Trentham from last year. I expect they will win a couple of games.

Think you were pretty spot on there rich. Honestly i hope you boys give rovers a touch up just to shut them up! i even heard that from their tresurer! but most tips pretty self explainitory i guess. newstead should get up you'd think. bushy will get done by avoca, but dont expect it to be a push over, avoca have only beaten them once since they came into the league. maldon and brook should win by fair margins one would expect.

Rovers are moving the ball too well at the moment and have enjoyed a great pre season campaign compared to Talbot. Brook will give Creek a rude welcome to the league. Maldon's new players have the town talking and should make light work of Dunolly. Avoca have recruited well where Bushy mostly have exits. Don't expect a repeat of Bushy's surprise win like last year. Trentham will show that they could be a dark horse this year by beating Newstead.

I think you are very close here EarToTheGround. Rovers have been extremely impressive and will be too quick and silky for the Hawks. Carisbrook will record an easy victory to start the season. A new look Maldon will easily account for Dunnolly. Avoca may record a league record winning margin against Bushy and I'm tipping a draw between the stedder's and the saints.

No idea. We keep in constant contact with Trav and he only gave us the word this week that he wanted to leave his Melbourne club.

Talbot rounded out preparations with a solid hitout last night with great numbers. Will have a few missing in both grades for tomorrow night but should field two competitive units. Cant wait!

I saw Rovers last Friday and they did look quite impressive, moved the ball well and had pace. Serpentine were not able to apply much physical pressure and hopefully Talbot can in this area. Should be a good game.

Rovers have had what 3 games under lights at the venue?? Massive + for them I believe. In comparison we've had the one praccy match. We are prob a little underdone but certainly wont be looking for excuses. A couple of our recruits will be unavailable this week but we are still fielding a strong side and we feel we will be stonger than last season. Who really knows how it will all gel when the real stuff starts.

I believe Rovers have a massive amount of pressure on them which has mainly been created by themselves. They have been very vocal in their confidence for this season and are widely known to be spending the money hunting for that ever elusive flag. A few of their recruits would need to lift from what I saw last Friday night.

couldnt agree more, well covered!

i like the idea of friday night games as it enables supporters to travel and see two games of football for the w/e! i wonder whether the new administration may follow the lead of other leagues now scheduling a few friday and sunday games across the season..this coupled with anzac day and easter (O&M) "blockbusters" has potential to lift crowd numbers and also the leagues appeal to players considering moving in future years!!

was there any final decision on what ball the league will use or is it still club preference?

All clubs must use League supplied Burleys. These balls have sponsorship on them etc. Friday night is a terrific idea. Helps with recruiting I believe and gets everyone excited and gives other clubs a rare chance early in the season to have a look at the opposition. There is another Friday night game scheduled for Anzac day between Dunolly and Rovers. At this stage they are the only two fixture changes but I think there is the potential to make some more.

Personally I hate Sunday footy. Not sure if that is really necessary in our comp.

okay burleys and bruised feet sundays it is lol..no the sponsorship is definitely a positive!

sunday matches as a supporter is always enjoyable for a few stubbies, but not so much for players backing up with shorter breaks and fronting for work monday!
the sunday suggestion was more floated in relation to the worsening drought and therefore ground conditions with the possibility of grounds becoming unplayable and having to use set grounds for all matches meaning scheduling across the w/e to allow these!
it is also in relation to umpire shorteges, with less and less becoming available, matches across the w/e are being played in some leagues so that the same umpires can be used..just thinking ahead rich

:thumbsd:Yes young Lach Liddicoat still eligable to play this year of 17's.. :)

Good nickname 'The Horse' ..

League Best and Fairest last year.. With the likes of Mottram, Stiles, Turner, Lierich all in form at the moment the Dunolly Juniors are devolping well :D

Young tough nut Collins to back the side up alot with younger guys around field.

Rovers to have a great side this year but will anyone be able to stop the big horse.. I know they are all hoping he plays Rebals :p

Cunningham better watch out in the 1's, he might cop a large clean bump for the Horse during the season and find himself in hospital. We all know he's a true soft sheep dog

Bit of a story in the "statewide sport" section in the Hun today about the Creek and it's revival.

Apparently the new prez said two weeks ago - "let's make it happen" and it has and that is that.

Makes all you other adminstrators of clubs look pretty ordinary I reckon. Perhaps he has been reading that book "The Secret?"

Trentham seniors had a 25 point win over Newstead, Kallen Young was outstanding as was there new recruit Mark Darby who was very strong up forward. The reserves defeated Newstead by about 100 points and will again be very strong for the year. The under 17s went down by 5 goals and showed big improvements from last year with Healy being there best player for the day.

Rovers ran away comfortable 6 goal victors.

Rovers best - Fraser, Clark & Hedger's

Talbots best - M.Smith

Very disapointing to see the way Talbot treated this game. They didn't look concerned about winning the ball at any stage and where more interested in head hunting the opposition.

Great win to Rovers.

9.8.62 to 3.13.31. Rovers skills were the difference with Talbot very wasteful particularly in front of goal. I thought Talbot were running the game out the better but couldn't convert. A few undisciplined plays hurt Talbot also. They will be better for the run.
