Many of you probably won't know this guy, except those of you into 'heavier' stuff, but I just found out that Chuck (singer/guitarist with Death/Control Denied) passed away on the 13th December after a long battle with a rare form of brain cancer.

This guy was one of my original inspirations for playing music, and this news has really brought a downer on my Xmas, as his music was an important part of my life.

For those of you who know who I'm talking about, if you are interested there is a condolence book for his family that you can sign at:

Bugger :(

I wasn't a huge Death fan, but I know a lot of bands did look up to Chuck and his work, and regarded him as one of the best frontmen/writers in grind and death metal.
Death was also the band which gave prominence to Gene Hoglan on drums (now plays drums for Devin Townsend).

And James Murphy (ex-Testament, who unfortunately is also very sick at the moment with some sort of tumour apparently:( )...

And the muso's from the band Cynic...

And the muso's in Six Feet Under...

And so on...
:(

Actually Darkster, you should check out Control Denied. From what I've seen of your tastes, I guarantee it'll be up your alley - kinda Priestish (Painkiller era) Power Metally stuff. Singer sounds like Halford.
Not exactly my cuppa o' cha, but the music was great, and I'm sure you'd like it.

You might also like the Death stuff on the latter albums (Symbolic, Sound Of Perserverence), which was a lot more refined than the 'death metally' stuff they invented.

('Sound of Perserverence' actually contains a pretty good cover of the song 'Painkiller' BTW!;) )

He was only in his early thirties too. :(

Recommendationds duly noted SB.

I had thought James Murphy was in Death too, but wasn't entirely sure.

I guess it goes to show that people can die young even if they avoid the naughty indulgences that go with a rock'n'roll lifestyle.
Ozzy Osbourne gave up all that sh1t a few years ago after smashing himself senseless with overindulgences - I reckon he's gonna live till he's 90 and after using 8 of his 9 lives on drugs and alcohol, he'll probably get hit by a bus or something.

What a wacky world it is.

Chuck Died?

I didn't know, I am in shock....

I thought he was making a full recovery, this is just tragic :(

How ironic that the Control Denied cd was entitled "The Fragile Art of Existance".

I am in shock, i don't like the death or darker styles of metal, EXCEPT for Death. He was a terrific musician, and if you've heard the Control Denied CD then you can really see the talent the man had....

Life is so fragile.....

I will check out the site immediately.

I just signed the book, anyone else that has looked up to Chuck- please do the same.

Too many good guys die young, my avatar (the guitar with roses up the fretboard)- is in tribute to Criss Oliva from Savatage, killed when a drunk driver (on about his 10th reckless driving charge) smashed his car into Oliva's, killing Oliva & permanantely injuring his wife.

One of the greatest musicians of all time, just running into his peak taken away from us....

What a ****ing tragedy...

Anyone interested on Savatage PLEASE visit www.realsavatage.com (a great memorial site on Criss Oliva) or just look at the fron page of the official site www.savatage.com.

Thank you.
