View Full Version : My 2 cents worth

I am as annoyed as anyone about our recent form. I can take a loss if the effort is there. I realise we have injuries a the moment and that is hurting us but what worries me is our style of play.
In the first 2 rounds we were awesome and our style of play was completely different to what it is now. In the first 2 rounds we played on a lot, with the run from defence we were able to do that. This allowed for fast ball movement and left our forwad line open which is great.
Now where is the run? we mark the ball and stop, get a free kick, stop. Why cant we move the ball quick. There is no run through the lines.
All summer we heard Bomber say how they are working on moving the ball quickly into the forward line and we did for the first 2 rounds. Why not since. Bomber even said in the paper he didnt know why, so it sounds like he is telling the players to do it. Why wont the players do it.
I'm puzzled.
We hear all the time "but teams are flooding back on us" so what if we move it quick like we did in round 1 and 2 they wont have a chance.
Please can we play properly and not chip it around.
This week is HUGE for us, dare i say "a mini final". It is Friday night footy everyone will be watching, Melbourne are going ok and a loss will see us at 2-4 and in a bit of trouble. Traditionally we play well against the Dees. It is time to stand up boys and get the season back on track this week because if we cant beat the Dees we are in serious trouble.
HOW WE CAN IMPROVE
- Move Milburn back to defence, his run and reading of the play back there is vital
- Play on at all costs and move the ball fast, this will promote run through the lines and fast ball movement will allow for an open forward line and it doesnt matter who is down there if it comes in quick we will be fine.
- Win some clearences, please
- Drop Charlie Gardiner, for ever.
- Play Moons a kick behind the play like in the final last year, he can then drift forward and back.
- Improve our kick ins.
- Hit the Demons hard, target the likes of Bruce, Yze and Green. When the leaders of the Dees get down so does their whole team, they can be soft, show some real hard, controlled aggression.
- Discipline, stop giving away silly frees, hello, Bartel and Slade.
Lets get behind our boys, i am as annoyed as the next supporter but with a few good ins to the side and perhaps some improvement in the areas i mentioned we will get back on track this Friday.
Stick with the team through thick and thin.

Agree with everything u say except drop Charlie ... its about time we had someone post a logical comment.
Charlie won't be dropped! Why not? Because he is in our best 22!!!

I agree, get rid of Charlie, he never does ANYTHING. He got hand fed 2 goals from Mooney on the weekend and that was ALL he did.
He doesn't chase and falls over all the bloody time, so frustrating.
As I said in a previous post, our players don't appear to have the confidence to kick it down the middle. If Hank comes back this week we will see the cats kick the ball to him straight up the middle of the ground. Too many times over the past week the first option has been to look sideways then backwards before looking forward and up the middle. Nothing against Charlie, Nathan or Lonners, but they don't command the pill the way that Hank did last year.
When your winning games like we did early you kick it long to the contest (no I'm not Sam Newman incase you were wondering) and back your teammates to take the mark or win the contested ball. You take the risk and move the ball quickly before the opposition can get numbers behind the ball. Over the last few weeks our blokes have played a more cautious game where they appear scared to stuff up. Now that is understandable but that is the kind of football that assists the flood of opposition players. It is also a sign of players playing for themselves and not for the team.
Task some risks boys, break the lines boot the pilll long and reap the rewards.

This needs to be printed on Kane Tenaces arm so he reads it out in the middle. And in the clubrooms. Good work Rosso.

Whilst Sam is laughed at for many of the stupid things he says and does. He is absolutely spot on with this one. Get it in their quick, take some risks, kick it long to the contest and run with the footy.
Everyone focuses on the fact that it gives the big guys more of a chance. Don't forget the little blokes. Chappy and Lil Gaz would love to have an uncrowded forward line to run into and get front and square.

Sam is spot on and i think with the personell we have in our forward line the quicker it gets in there the better. Not because our Keys are crap but because of the great defenive pressure Ablett and Chappy put on the opposition.

If you'd been at the game on Saturday night you may have also witnessed him offering a number of leads as a mobile target across half-forward.

Yes Gardner is good at that, but he really has to work on his kicking. Very frustrating cos he lets down his own good work and the efforts of those who get the ball to him.

Was at the game. The most annoying thing about Charlie was when he did mark he would turn his back to the game and meander back to his mark, then look for options. By then there weren't any. Happened a couple of times.

Agree with this point entirely. Best of luck for this coming weekend.

It was funny on saturday night listening to Malcom Blight's comments re Charlie. He was nearly laughing at the end.
We all have a crack at the cats after bad losses but realistically I had us being 3-2 at this stage, so we are only 1 game behind what we should be.
We will all be back at the G on Friday hoping they can reverse there fortunes. If not we will be at the dome the next friday, and so on. You must take the good with the bad. There can only be one winner and hopefully that is us.

Thats what its all about, as much as they annoy us we must stick by them.
I forgot to add, we really need Henry back. What do you think Jack?

I think he could single handedly turn the teams fortunes around with his 4 kicks a week !!!!!

Anthony Rocca had 5 kicks for five goals on the weekend.
Now if Hank had 4 kicks and kicked 3, that would be nice.

Where we should be is 5-0. We absolutely murdered Brisbane and North, so explain to me why we should not aim to beat Hawthorn, Footscray or Sydney. Yes Sydney are the premiers but they're hardly unbeatable. The simple fact is they should have won ALL those games.
Interesting reading the comments regarding Gardiner. Yes he leads straight up the ground, yes he presents well.
But......
He falls over whenever anyone touches him. He drops chest marks. He cannot mark over his head. His awareness is nonexistent. His kicking is atrocious. He hasn't improved in 5 years.
He is a complete buffoon. Goodbye and good riddance.

In reality these are the 2 bottom teams. Yes we should have beaten hawthorn. But after that we lost to the Bulldogs who were the form team of the comp at the time by only a point and we actually should have won and we lost to Sydney in Sydney. Thats will happen to a lot of teams. So in reality we have lost one gaem we SHOULD have won vs Hawks.

We were able to do it in the first two rounds because we only played Brisbane and the Kangaroos. Who can't do that against these teams at the moment.
