Lenny Hayes...

Lenny Hayes, St Kilda, has been charged with a Level Three attempting to strike offence against Steven Dodd, Fremantle, during the first quarter of the Round Five match between St Kilda and Fremantle, played at Aurora Stadium on Sunday April 30, 2006. His one-match suspension cannot be reduced with an early plea, due to an existing bad record.

The incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point), in play (no points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, which relates to a Level Three offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match suspension. He has an applicable bad record of two matches suspended which increases the penalty by 10 per cent to 137.50 points. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 103.13 points and a one-match suspension.

Fraser Gehrig...

The match day charged laid against St Kilda's Fraser Gehrig was reviewed. It was the view of the Match Review Panel that Gehrig made contact to the face of Josh Carr with an open hand. The contact was made in a pushing motion, rather than a striking motion, and no charge was laid.

Does anybody remember when Grant Thomas started Hayes on the bench in the game at the G in 2004? It was the ultimate insult to our proud club. I hope we smash them for that insult!!!

Thats hillarous!
He basically punched someone with a open hand and they call it pushing!

I wish we beat them now as not only did they rob Freo, their coach says he didn't hear the siren when its obvious he would have knopw how long was left and now Gehrig gets off because of wording change.

I actually thought Lenny might win the Brownlow this season. He is a pretty good player.

Gehrig decision is a joke. If it was with a flat head why not change the charge? Even drop the charge and get him on video? Incredible.

Karate dudes can kill people with flat handed punches. Harris should go out and flat punch Gehrig's nose into his brain (or in Fraser's case empty cranium space).

You've been watching too much Karate Kid.

No that would cause some facial improvments.

I must say I was surprised reading the report details. I would have thought, Gehrig's report was much more severe than Hayes. Tribunal, they work in mysterious ways.

No such thing as watching a 1980's movie too much. In all seriousness how much damage could you do to someone punching them with a flat hand? Lets just flat fist punch from now on.

It would be great if he misses.
Their best player at the moment and captain.

He should get off. I hope he plays.
We shouldn't be focussing on who is not playing for the opposition but rather who is. I think the Adelaide debacle is proof of that.

I reckon I could do just as much damage with the heel of my hand to someone's face as my fist could do. Is it open season now is it?

This is where the AFL gets itself into so much trouble. By not taking a stand any player now has a precedent to do as much damage as they like. This is how we have players punching other players 40 metres of the ball and somehow being in the play

Farcical.

Their best player at the moment and captain.

And speaking of farce, I wouldnt put too much stock in him being captain. Doesnt every child get a prize at the Saints?

That's exactly what I was saying last night watching White Line or On The Couch. That was a forceful, undisciplined strike, not a push. He'd lost it and it should not be tolerated or watered down.

The Hayes incident is just as hillarous with the wording "attempting to strike".
Either he hit him or he didn't. Just because he didn't hit with the hand or fist doesn't mean he didn't strike him. He clothes lined him in fact with his forearm.

Hayes's action had the potential to do harm and given his previous record of points accrued he deserves the one week penalty.

That is possible because proximity to the ball doesn't define how "in play" you are, and nor should it.

Gehrig should be dropped to the 2s for his ridiculous behaviour. But he won't.

I hope he plays and Harris winds him up every opportunity he gets. Although Harro doesn't seem like the sledging type. Who's the mouthiest Bulldog in the side?

Why? I agree the report description is rubbish but he still hit the opposition player.

Whilst it may have been better for us that Lenny was suspended - there is no way he deserved a week. However, how on earth did Gehrig get off??? He assaulted his opponent - irrelevant whether it was open hand or closed fist. A open hand strike (not a push as they stated) can be as violent as a closed fist, surely???? An absolute joke - Gehrig should have been suspended.

The report stated a "strike with a clenched fist".

It wasn't, so off on a technicallity.

Glad Hayes got off, wouldn't have been too happy if one of our blokes copped a week for that.
For confused on how Gehrig got off.

Some of you may have seen some vision of the Hayes incident on replay, a nothing affair where he is falling backwards and has his arm outstretched to an opposing player running past him.

However, according to SEN, this wasn't the incident he got reported for. The actual attempted striking charge was based on an umpire's report, but there was no vision available.

The dills at the tribunal thought they were adjudicating on the former rather than the latter, and the case was thrown out in 30 seconds.
