After reading the Reece Cordy thread

I couldn't think of many players taken by the Bulldogs under the father son rule. All that came to mind was the Whitten's. Who else has been drafted under this rule and are ther any other players that may be available in the near future?

Luke Darcy is the only one that springs to mind.

Did we draft Shaggy with a fourth round pick? If we did he's like a bonus F/S selection.

Sort of.

Easier to ask which sons haven't we drafted over the years....

Andrew Merrington (son of Garry) played at Carlton for several seasons after being picked up from St Bernards in the Amateurs - we overlooked him.

Jarrod Thorpe (son of David) played U/19s (I think) for us.

Alby Smedts' son was available in the last few years, but we didn't get him as Alby didn't play enough games.

Robbie McGhie's son was/is available, but same reason - not enough games by Dad.

Allan Edwards went to Richmond and Collingwood before coming to us on his last legs. His son was drafted last year - grandson of Arthur Edwards, 54 premiership hero.

Young Gilmore at Fremantle or West Coast is the grandson of Brian (54 flag side).

Ron Wearmouth's father played for Footscray as well.

Paul Spargo (North - 80s) was the son of one of the Spargo brothers (Bob and Ricky) who played for us in the 60s, who themlseves were the son of Bob Spargo sen, also a Footscray player of yesteryear.

Bob Ware (61 GF side) was the nephew of the great Norm Ware, and son of his brother Bob who played at Hawthorn in the 30s (the elder Ware's lined up several times on opposing sides).

Paul Ross (80s) was the son of Don Ross (54 flag side) but only played one or two games.

Ryan Hargrave is the son of Steve (1982) who was actually at the club for 3 years but suffered serious knee injuries repeatedly, recruited as a CHF, his knees were eventually so bad he played 2 games at CHB.

Cameron Wight's father Terry played a few games for us after croosing from Collingwood in the late 70s).

We've also had several sons of players from other clubs recently:

Paul Dimmatina (son of Frank - Richmond)
Paul Hudson - (son of Peter - Hawthorn)
Patrick Bowden (son of ??? - Richmond)

Hopefully in years to some the young Darcy, Johnson, Smith, West boys will give us a bit more satisfaction in this area, assuming they turn out to be good players and the rule still exists.

Forgot Steve Boyle's son at Hawthorn - again not enough games by Steve to qualify us for the father/son pickup.

From memory, I think Gary Dempsey and Bernie Quinlan had girls only??

Anyway footscray1973 son #1 and son #2 will be available for drafting in 2017 and 2020 respectively - not father/sons, but the next best thing - sons of a curmudgeonly old Footscray supporter with a hatred of all other AFL clubs (except North Melbourne). If they get drafted elsewhere, I'll just have to barrack against them :D ......

Gary Dempsey has at least one son who would be in his early 20's (taught at the school he went to in the early 90's).

On a side note GD's daughter had the best show and tell ever - GD's Brownlow Medal. Had it in my hot little hands but as it was on a cardboard mount couldn't place it around my neck.

JARROD AND DEAN, one of them played for western jets 2003-2004 , wasn't drafted and last year was playing for Werribee seconds i think.

NO idea about the younger one he should be about 17-18 now.

DOES ANY ONE KNOW?.

I think that Harry and Harvey Stevens are the only F/S combination to captain a league club as well.

Simon Beasley has a boy who plays footy as well.

Correct, but I think the father's name was Harvey as well. Harvey Jr originally played at Collingwood, but crossed to us in time to be part of the 54 flag side. He took over as captain temporarily when Sutton retired, until Whitten got the Captian-Coach gig.

Correct. You'd think I'd know that with me having a son called Harvey and everything.

Local, for my two boys, I've got a list of famous people with the same first name. You could do one for Harvey - Harvey Stevens (Snr and Jnr), Harvey Keitel, Harvey ummm, there must be others.... Tracy Harvey the comedian has a son called Harvey, and I'm not sure but he might have taken her surname as well, so he's potentially Harvey Harvey! Kate Langbroek's son is Lewis Lewis as well - sounds a bit like Major Major Major from Catch-22 !

Jarrod played a couple of games for the Jets as a bottom age (17yo) player last year. Is not on the list this season.

There seems to be a lot of Americans with the name Harvey, Harvey Wenstein the film maker for example . We got the name from a film called Harvey with Jimmy Stewart;
