View Full Version : From the Vault Swans v Footscray,rd 2 1987
What a classic, they way footy was played, no chipping sideways/backwards.
Long and direct footy...
How things have changed.
All the old names..Wallis, Royal, Ford, McPherson, McGuinnes, Foster, Baxter, Perser, Coleman, Williams, Capper, Healy, Bayes.
I reckon there would have been 5 reports in the first quarter if this game was played these days, the players involved didn't even react, not even a free-kick.
I have no idea of the result but looks like we're heading for a 100 point loss.
Currently 98-37
Anyone watching or remember this game?

Yes, I am watching it aswell..how good was Rick Kennedy an absolute legend. You wouldn't have wanted to get in his way.

That was a great mark on the last line of defence, diving into the goal post.
Finished now, Swans ran out winners by 108 points they didn't show the last quarter... which is good i guess.

Was Hawkins playing in that game...or was that around the time he was out with his knee injury, I didn't spot him out there.

He returned later in the year against West coast at the whitten oval.

Me too. Dont remember the final result at all.
Despite having a competitive team for most of the 80's, the Swans routinely smashed us at the SCG. Our first ever victory there was in 1990, in Chris Grant's 2nd ever game. From memory he kicked 5.5 on Rod Carter.

It was also Leon Cameron's first game, as he didn't get a gig in R1 versus Saints. Think Leon may have been in the best too?

Yes, Leon was terrific that day. He would have been 65kgs dripping wet when he started his career.
The other interesting thing about 1987 was that we were absolutely hammered in the first 3 games of the season but then managed to improve as the season wore on to the extent that we only missed out on the final 5 becuase of our gut-wrenching loss to Melbourne at the kennel in Round 22. I've only ever felt worse in one other match since then: the 1997 Prelim. But I was absolutely gutted after Round 22 in 1987.
I remember Mick Malthouse talking about Collingwood in 2002 being the most surprising performance from a group that he ever coached, and he said that the only other team he coached that surprised him as much with their resolve was the Bulldogs in 1987.
Season's 1986-1988 were very frustrating in hindsight as we were highly competitive but managed to fall over at the death in each of these seasons. I personally think we underachieved in these years, especially in 1986, after our stellar season in 1985. The Malthouse-Hardie fiasco late in 1986 was a bit of a turning point as Mick's relationship with the club seemed to become strained from then on. Doug's knee injury early in 1986 didn't help matters either.

From memory we got smashed in the first 3 games only to beat reigning premier Hawthorn in round 4.
