Stylish Swamprats overcome Dragons

The Alberton Swamprats have started their 2006 campaign in style, blowing their opponents away in the second half to record a 32 point victory.

Slow out of the blocks, the Swamprats trailed by 25 points during the second quarter. But the Swamprats gained momentum in the second half and ran away comfortable victors.

The turning point of the match saw usual defender PortProudWA move into the ruck, replacing 2005 best and fairest winner Crazy Big Al. The move paid dividends as the Swamprats began to win the ball at the stoppages, with PortProudWA reguarly feeding Captain Macca19 and fellow midfielders dyertribe, Total Power and Andre.

By half time, the Swamprats had levelled the scores and were back in the contest. The third quarter was a tough battle with both teams spending time in the league. The Dragons worked well after the Swamprats kicked two quick goals after half time. The teams went goal for goal before a mid quarter Swamprats surge saw them move 15 points in front. Again, the Dragons kept in touch with the Swamprats and were just ten points behind at the last change.

The last quarter was all the Swamprats as they made the most of their opportunities, whilst the Dragons squandered many chances to put pressure on the Swamprats. Total Power went bezerk in the last quarter, kicking three goals, whilst Santos L Helper played well from centre half forward.

The Swamprats kicked six goals to two in the last quarter, and ended up victorious by 32 points. Total Power was named best on ground after a 5 goal performance, whilst also doing the hard work laying 10 tackles. PortProudWA's move to the ruck worked, with her 15 hitouts and 2 goals influential. The Swamprats defence held strong after a shaky start, with Porthos, Ford Fairlane and blackdiamond continuing their strong form from last season, whilst debutant Toots Hibbert performed admirably. Santos L Helper and snap-shot were busy across half forward.

Alberton face the Demons next week, who lost today to the Wonders.

Round 2 - Swamprats vs Demons

Alberton has started the 2006 season strongly, winning their Round 2 clash against the Demons by 22 points today.

Like their first round victory, the Swamprats were slow to begin with and trailed at the first two breaks. However, 5 goal to 1 final quarter saw them run away with the victory.

The Swamprats kicked four of the opening five goals of the third quarter to break out to an 18 point lead before the Demons fought their way back into the contest. They kicked the last three goals of the quarter to trail by just the one goal at the final change.

But the Swamprats got on top early in the final quarter, kicking their five final quarter goals in the opening 11 minutes of the term.

The Swamprats were best served by Total Power who had a dominant match in the midfield. He had 22 disposals and kicked three goals, two of which came at the crucial start to the last quarter. The Swamprats forward line made the most of their opportunities, with Santos L Helper, dreamkillers and Groove kicking 8 goals from just 13 kicks between them.

The fourth-placed Alberton Swamprats take on the Roys this weekend, who are currently sitting in last place.

The Swamprats made two unforced changes to their squad to face the Roys. Wingman JuniorBurger plays his first match for the year, whilst the Swamprats will debut young midfielder eddie_vrv6. Out of the squad come sog35 and Arsene Wenger.

The Swamprats Captain/Coach Macca19 sung the praises of his sides early season form.

"We've begun the season well. We want success this year. We were a painful step away last year and we want to improve our side to win the premiership this year. A couple of our younger guys in Total Power and Troy Wingate have really shown something whilst our defence has been solid. We have a lot of depth at the moment and hopefully we can continue this form".

2nd year player Total Power has started the season in exceptional form. The midfielder currently leads the competition in Tackles, is equal top on the Goalkicking ladder and has the 6th most kicks in the league.

Swamprats home in thriller

The Alberton Swamprats have continued their unbeaten start to the season, escaping with a 1-point victory against the Roys yesterday.

Leading by a huge 47 points at half time, the Swamprats went to sleep in the third quarter, kicking just two behinds whilst the Roys piled on 6 unanswered goals to trail by just 8 points at the last change.

An early goal to Flea29 put the Roys to within 2 points bu the Seamprats regained their compusure and found themselves leading by 24 points again halfway through the quarter. The Roys were not finished with yet.

Three goals in little over a minute saw them right back in the contest, but a Ray Nolan clearing handball found PortProudWA in space, who went on to kick a huge goal from outside50 to steady the ship once again. A behind to the magnificent dyertribe and a rushed behind saw them in front by 13 points with two minutes left.

The Swamprats again struggled to shut down the game, with RoyLion and Paul D goaling within a minute to cut the margin to one point and send the match into a thrilling finish. The Roys went forward twice in the last minute but were stopped both times by Ford Fairlane who had a superb game at Centre Half Back. The Roys were going forward again when the siren blew, handing Alberton their luckiest victory of their history.

THe Swamprats will look at what went wrong in that third quarter but will be pleased with their dominating first half. They had four goals on the board before the Roys kicked their first. They continued that form to lead by 34 points at the first change. The Roys did their best to shut down the game in the second quarter, choking the Swamprats for space in the forward line. However, the Swamprats still managed to get the ball into their forward line enough times to outscore the Roys by another 2 goals, giving them their half time 47 point lead.

Vice Captain dyertribe was the catalyst of the victory, kicking four first half goals, whilst Groove kicked his two goals for the match in the second quarter. Ford Farilane had an excellent showing at Centre Half Back, blocking three different opponents from having a major influence on the game, whilst Totos Hibbert continued his impress start to his career. Porthos and blackdiamond were strong and attacking from the flanks.

Total Power and Captain Macca19 had a big influence in the midfield, picking up 54 disposals and 17 tackles between them. The forward line was strong with Santos L Helper, Troy Wingate, snap-shot and Groove always looking dangerous and setting up many chances for each other.

Captain Macca19 saw improvement in the side still to come, "We've generally had one poor quarter each week so far. The first two games we were slow starters and had to play catch up football so it was good to start well today. The third quarter nearly lost us the match so again its that one poor quarter that is letting us down at the moment. We will have to do some work this week in making sure we are switched on for four quarters next week.

"Its pleasing to continue winning and seeing the form of some of our players. Total Power keeps playing well, our defence has improved on last year, our midfield is winning big numbers and we seem to have found a decent mix in our forward line."

Swamprats thrashed

Albertons unbeaten start to the season has come to an end, with the Titans thrashing the Swamprats by 49 points.

After an even first quarter, the Titans went on a rampage in the second quarter, kicking seven goals to one to lead by 37 points at half time. They increased that lead to 48 points at three quarter time before both sides kicked four goals in the last quarter to see the Titans win by 49 points.

The Titans midfield dominated with Mizza kicking 5 goals, whilst other midfielders such as Jeffers1984, SportySpice and Dees Best also kicked multiple goals.

The Swamprats were best served by Total Power who continued his great form. He managed 21 disposals and 3 goals. Porthos, Ford Fairlane and Toots Hibbert worked manfully in defence, as did dyertribe and Andre across the middle.

The loss will bring the Swamprats back down to earth after they had won the first three games of the season. Macca19 was less than pleased with the effort.

"Its dissapointing to get thrashed like that after a good start to the season. Our midfield was too loose for most of the day. Their midfielders kicked a lot of goals and we lacked a goal scoring presence up forward for most of the day."

Alberton drop to fourth on the ladder and face the second placed Furies next week

Two Changes for Swamprats

Alberton Swamprats have made two changes for this weeks clash against the 2nd placed Furies.

Key forward Russian comes in for his first game of the season and will start at Full Forward. port1978 also comes in for her first match of the season and will start in a back pocket.

Omitted from the side are PortProudWA and first year player eddie_vrv6. Macca19 was hoping for a better effort than last week.

"We will need to be on our game this week. Its important for us to stay in touch with the top of the ladder sides and beating the Furies will give us a chance to get above them. It will be a good test for us.

"We've made a couple of changes and have moved a couple of regulars around a bit. PPWA and eddie will get another go soon"

Gumbies triumph against mediocre Swamprats

Geelong Gumbies have come away with a handy away win, triumphing over the Swamprats by 15 points.

Leading by 25 points at the last change, the Gumbies fell in a hole early in the last quarter, allowing the Swamprats back into the contest. The Swamprats stole the lead 11 minutes into the last quarter after consecutive goals to port1978, Groove and Russian. Gumbies regrouped quickly and kicked the final three goals of the match.

The Swamprats midfield won plenty of the ball but failed to deliver the ball to their forwards advantage on occasion. The Swamprats forward line struggled to keep the ball in the area and they saw it rebound out time and again.

Centre Half Back Ford Fairlane had a day out, taking down 14 marks across half back and having an extraordinary 32 disposals. Crazy Big Al, port1978 and Toots Hibbert also performed well.

Three changes for Swamprats

The Alberton Swamprats have made three changes to the side that defeated the Koalas last weekend.

Pred was suspended for two matches, whilst snap-shot and port1978 are two unforced changes.

Macca19 has added in three faces to the lineup. All Australian dreamkillers comes back into the line up and slots straight into his forward pocket. 2nd year players Arsene Wenger and Powerstufff get another chance to solidify their spot in the side.

Alberton face off against new club the East-Side Hawks this weekend. They have performed admirably with 3 wins and sitting in seventh spot at the moment. Alberton are sitting comfortably in third position with only percentrage keeping them from top spot.

Horrid first half. We were 7 goals down at half time. Weve lost top spot now, and amazingly, we have a sub 100% despite winning double the amount of games!

Gotta get that top spot back

Good solid win on Monday night footy by the Swampies. Led at every change and the final margin flattered the Demons I feel.

Hey Macca 3 kicks 21 handballs! What's going on with that?

Porthos and Ray were up there too with the handballs.

Good to see I got the better of RoosterLad on the night after having five goals kicked on me the week before.
