View Full Version : Hip Hop - What the ..?
Can someone please explain to me how hip hop music maintains such a stranglehold over radio and television. IMO it is the most overhyped, meaningless music I've ever heard since they started playing muzac in elevators.
I was watching Rage on Sat morning and I swear it was dominated by hiphop type music, some of it could have been played with a single Lowry 2000 keyboard - a particular song comes to mind as being so lame it represents everything that is wrong with the modern commercialized music industry. I've managed to mentally blank out most of this song, but I do remember a bunch of people bobbing around in a "diner" to a melody that could be played with one hand on a keyboard while karaoke lyrics scrolled acroos the screen .
To think that a culture that brought us the blues, soul and jazz music now puts out this garbage.

hip hop and rap are definatly the most annoying and overrated genre of music. The only people that enjoy it are townies that wear pants 40 sizes too big and say "waddup yo my homeboy".
Cant stand it, will never like it and its a blight on music. Its popular (and this isnt meant to sound racist) because black america keeps it going in my view. Black Americans are always musically associated with hip hop and rap. They buy millions of cds of the same style and tahts what keeps it in the charts....it rubs off on the rest of the world too.
I tend not to take any notice of whats in the top 40. I havent watched morning rage or video hits in years simply because its a waste of time. All it consists of is R&B, rap, hip hop and the odd limp bizkit/creed/pearl jam song.
Mind you....Rage from midnight to about 4 30 is alright.

All you people are doing is stereotyping black americans. Just like the rest of the world thinks we say "G'day mate" and "Throw another shrimp on the barbie". I for one have never had shrimp on a barbie and i very rarely say gday mate. Sure some people do, but i could guarantee that the majority of people don't.

nah, not black americans....homeboys/townies in general. Thats how they speak...come see the townies where i live and they act exactly the same....and they arent black americans...they are white aussies.
Just how they act...wear fubu, baggy pants 40 sizes to big and speak like a tool.

Fair enough, i misunderstood, but i agree with you there with the fact that people try to be a different culture when they shouldn't. I am a fan of rap/r&b music, but i don't wear homy crap or speak that way, i just enjoy the music. All the tryhards should be shot.
Or people who think they're black.
I couldn't stand it at schoolies with all my mates playing Dre, Snoop and Nelly all week long.

Enough is enough. Down with Shaggy, Craig David, Puff Daddy, P Diddy, Snoop Doggy Dog, Dr Dre, Blue Cantrell, Alicia Keys, Missy Elliot, NELLY, City High, Korrupt, Jagged Edge etc etc etc

I'm not a fan of their music, but I can tell you - I met her (and some of the band) in Thailand a few years ago, and she IS FINE!
She wore a teeny red bikini at the pool - damn what a day!
Mmmmm!:D :D :D
It's just a shame she is tainted by that fcukwit for Bush...
Some of the **** is cool.
Eminem - Marshall Mathers Lp was one of the best Rap albums of all time.
Dr Dre - the godfather of rap, Straight Outta Compton was revelation of an album and to this day still stands as one of the best albums of his genre. The Chronic was also a great follow up album.
Snoop - the other godfather of rap, his Doggystyle album is probably the best rap album of all time...
Reakwon
Mobb Deep
Craig David - great debut album, Born to do It is a top album.
Jay-Z
Alicia Keys - Songs in A Minor was given 4 stars by Rolling Stone..
etc etc
Pop boyband **** is worse....

Kid Rock = White trash loser that appeals to the lowest common denominator of US white trash (Jerry Springer guests), and is an embarrassment. (In much the same way Creed is).
First Creed, and now Kid Rock.

Ok as my bigfooty name suggests i'm a big fan of Hip Hop/Rap/R&B (so if you haven't heard of OutKast then you don't really know much about Hip Hop anyway)... and i don't wear baggy jeans or Fubu (ok i have a cap but thats all) or visors or fake jerseys or any of that try hard crap. It's the music that appeals to me and not the whole 'black gangsta' image, whereas in my opinion the 16 year olds wiggaz prioritise the image while only having heard the top40 radio-friendly Hip Hop and the odd old tune from Snoop, Dre or Tupac.
Basically i'm just trying to say there is more to Hip Hop than white kids dressing and talking like tools, and don't take commercial radio Hip Hop too seriously. Often (but not always) these tunes are artists simply cashing in on the current popularity of Hip Hop by combining a catchy tune with radio friendly lyrics... ie Kurupt-It's Over, Ja Rule-Livin It Up, Jay-Z-Izzo and just about anything by P.Diddy. Some of the best Hip Hop and Rap you're not gonna hear on commercial radio...which makes the loss of the community stations (Kix, Hitz, City etc.) harder to accept.

I agree with most of what has been said here thus far. The "hip-hop" you are hearing in the top 40 charts is effectively R & B, with a rap slant!
It is akin to hearing Creed and then forming an instant dislike to Rock/Metal/Grunge, simply because it is watered down drivel for the masses of ill-informed mainstream radio listeners. But the truth of the matter is behind every Creed, there are a heap of quality bands, who may have had some success in the mainstream charts, but have relied on producing quality albums and that usually spread by word of mouth (as opposed to TV ads like Creed).
I have great respect for artists like Public Enemy, NWA, Run DMC, Beastie Boys & De La Soul.
I think Outkast are a great outfit, OutKast. I had the pleasure of hearing Aquemini, which was played to me by one of my mates and I really have to go an buy it (memo to self: stop drinking money away!)!
The term hip-hop offends me for most of these top-40 losers, cause hip-hop was really meant to refer to the utilisation of samples of other records over beats. Rap referred to vocals over beats. It all got thrown in the same basket somewhere along the line.
Incidentally, my favourite Hip-Hop artist, who actually does the "traditional" drum & sample thing is DJ Shadow. The album Endtroducing would be one of my favourite albums ever!!!
