Thanks to the The Flying Belgian for posting this link. It was in another thread but felt it deserved a thread of it's own.

This article on Foxsports.com.au (http://foxsports.news.com.au/story/0,8659,19110772-23211,00.html) seems to address some things.

LL,

On the Aker issue I think Brisbane may be in a case of reaping what they have sown.

Aker has a history of being outspoken and in the past the club has simply shrugged it off by saying "Well Aker is Aker."

Experience should have told them that if things went bad then keeping Aker's mouth shut would be very difficult.

The club is being a bit inconsistent with Aker, punishing him for speaking to the media, but only when the club is goign through a rough patch.

Regards

S. Pete

It's reasonable argument, SP, but don't you think it's natural to have an altered set of expectations in harder times than good times?

If we're sitting a game clear on top, the coaching staff isn't going to get narky cos blokes aren't doing extra goal-kicking after training. However if the club's sitting bottom, they're not going to take too kindly to blokes taking off early to play golf.

I get that in my job. Maybe you do too. Not a super hard concept for most of us to get a handle on.

A "to the point" observation and one that has some merit.

Still, if a direct edict was issued by the captain not to talk to the media this week, Aker should have abided by it.

This "edict" or direction from Voss now seems to have become the focus of why Aker was dropped, rather than the "leak" issue.

My only hope is that it is the real reason and not an excuse.

Well put.

Yesterday,I was mad as hell at the concept of Aker being dropped but having reflected on the issue, I can see where the club is coming from

The analogy you make is a good one.

I'll give Leigh a big tick for those comments, especially the ones about the patently ridiculous press reports about Aker's "future being sealed"....etc.

Well done L.Matthews for taking a lot of the heat out of the situation.

Your comments have some validity Stumpy. However, strategic positions are an ever evolving process. If the club was coming off the sixth win on the trot, I don't think anyone would have given a toss if Aker bared his asss and testicles instead of doing handstands after each game. Unfortunately we are not viewing the world from top of the "dung hill". We are the efen "dung hill". Makes a huge difference to ones tolerance levels.

Yep. It's a matter of perception. When things aren't going well it is a lot more important to look as if you're on the straight and narrow.

There's an interesting piece from Mike Coleman in today's Courier Mail. Mainly based around a mate of the journo who saw his first ever AFL game at the weekend (and hence has no pre-conceived ideas). His comments were along the lines of "that Akermanis, he was the only guy out there with any passion .... at least he looked like he cared".

This is a valid point too. Aka did show a lack of discipline last week but when certain sections of the team were folding, he kept going in the last quarter.

they always manage to spin the quotes in a way that sounds as bad as possible.
'leigh isnt talking about trading aker...YET'
there's a similar one on lions.com.au at the moment too.

My favourite is when someone says 'no comment' and then the journo says 'Such and such refuses to deny......'
