Apparently is a promo for Ch 7 news. I'll have to watch and see if it's a distorted interpretation.

That'd clear one headcase out if Choco were to head up there ...

Port flags Aker coaching role

PORT Adelaide coach Mark Williams has added another facet to the speculation about the future of Jason Akermanis, suggesting the Power might look to sign him in a coaching capacity.

Williams, clearly a fan of the controversial Brisbane Lions midfield player, said it might be too much to add another near-30- ear old to what is already one of the AFL's oldest lists.

But he offered the idea of a possible off-field role for the 2001 Brownlow medal winner.

"I think some clubs would (seriously look at him)," he said today.

"Where we are at the moment, we have to make some hard calls on that.

"We're one of the clubs with the most … players over 30 so probably putting another one of those in is not advantageous to us.

"But maybe he'll become a coach, and could come into the club in that regard.

"I've got no guarantee as to him coming in as a player, we'd think about it."

Williams said that his view had been formed purely from an outsider's perspective, but he believed there was plenty to like in the defiant way in which Akermanis carried himself.

"I've actually never talked to him," he said.

"I've certainly admired his play.

"He's been an outstanding footballer and he has a personality that adds a lot of spunk, if you like, to the organisation.

"There's a fine line as to how far you can take those sorts of things, and maybe he stepped over the line.

"I reckon he'd be the first to admit it."

Akermanis is contracted to the Lions until 2007, although speculation is rife that he may be traded at the end of this year after being dropped for tomorrow's clash with Hawthorn because of form and a failure to meet team guidelines.

On the opposite side of AAMI Stadium, Adelaide coach Neil Craig raised numerous reservations about the thought of Akermanis making a home with the Crows.

"There'd have to be a lot of work done with Jason, a lot of work done before we would go down that path," he said.

"Where we're going at the moment we've got enough 28, 29, 30 year olds, so the first question is: Why would you recruit a 30 year old, n fairness to our club and where we're coming from?

"I think that would be the policy of some clubs at the moment in development ... it would be a big decision for us to recruit a 30 year old."

Adelaide's thinking would be coloured by the mediocre performances of Wayne Carey and Ronnie Burns after they were recruited by the club for the 2003 season.

I believe he would be a good replacement for Freddy.

That would be a real waste of resources.

Oh wait, coach? Sure

Aker as a coach ? Hmm, well he wouldn't be afraid to try something different. I'd certainly rather him the McGuiness as our forward coach. At least he's played as real midfielder/forward and has seen how a REAL 3 tall forward structure was a big part of the Lions winning 3 flags - certainly something Tony McG doesn't bring.

As a player ? Not at his age with our list where it is.

I suspect Akermanis as coach = A. Jarman.

Imagine if Choco recruited a guy who irritated the crap out of him. He'd have to play him because he traded for him, while all the while wanting to dump him cos he won't do what he's told. The dynamic tension might actually see Choco fly apart at the seams!

Maybe he could get his revenge by playing him out of position.

You'd have to be kidding surely?
If Williams recruits this clown, it shows beyond any doubt he's gone too far.

Tagger? Back pocket? Aker's actually good in a forward pocket so Choco couldn't dump him in his favourite wasteland.

Im not sure about having Aker as coach but if he was up for grabs 2-3 years ago i would love him on our playing list because, I love blokes that have the big mouth like Aker (And even Mundine) that can back it up in their performances week in week out.
Sadly though i think Aker might be over it, but then again he might add a bit of spark if he is a forward coach or something!

Fights in one of the weakest divisions.

Beats up on stiffs.

Awarded a dubious points decision against Soliman.

Gets knocked out by Ottke, a feather puncher.

Runs for 12 rounds against Echols.

He's no Jeff Fenech or Kostya Tszyu, but for a bloke who stepped out of rugby and into the squared ring, Anthony Mundine has done alright. You don't fight for a world title by being a mug.

His old man was even better, fought in the middleweight division when it was genuine blue ribbon quality - Monzon, Valdes, Briscoe, Griffith, etc. And the light heavyweight division was pretty good too when he a crack there. Mate Parlov was a great champion as was Monzon and Tony fought them both for the title (lost to both of them, but that was no disgrace, plenty of others did that too).

I can't imagine Aker and Choco in the same room together let along playing or coaching at the same club. Would be a very odd mix-bit like the one they had at Gladstone.

You don't fight for a world title by being a mug.

Well, you could argue that quite a few mug's have had a shot at a world title over the years.

Remember Joe Louis' 'Bum of the Month' club?

But, I'd agree that Mundine is no mug - over 40,000 punters will pack into Aussie Stadium for the Green bout.

Makes me laugh though, that Green v Mundine is being billed as the biggest fight in the history of Australian boxing.

Fenech-Nelson II, anyone?

FWIW, I hope that the winner of Green-Mundine goes on to take the super-middleweight belt and gives Sam Soliman a deserved shot at a world title.

Doubt it, though because Soliman is too dangerous...

Joe Louis? I couldn't coment on the quality of his opposition in the 1940s, but I imagine opponent selection was a little different back then, especially with the propaganda angle around WW2. The different world boxing organisations have a fair degree of variance around their top 10 rankings, but I'm sure they are all quality fighters.

Let's not forget Mundine not only actually won a world title, but he fought for it again after losing it, and was defeated only on a split decision.

In terms of purely domestic fights I guess Mundine - Green would be up there. We've had some big international fights here - we even had Frazier v Ellis here in the 70s (crap fight, but huge hype) - but it's rare we produce two top flight fighters at the same time in one division. Had Anthony's old man ever fought Charkey Ramon, that would've been huge at the time.

Soliman is ranked 3 I think by the WBA so he would be in line somewhere along the line for a title fight.
