View Full Version : Aust. vs Sth Afr Third Test *Official Thread*
Australia have won the toss and batted at Sydney and are 0/16 Pollock has caused Langer a few problems Donald isn't bowling that well.
MacGill has come into the side for Bichel two form the two pronged spin attack.
South Africa have dropped Nantie Hayward for Nicky Boje, meaning South Africa are playing two left arm orthodox bowlers. Justin Ontong is also in for his test replacing the holidaying Lance Klusener.
Well, it's lunch day 1 and the aussies have made a very promising start. 0/93 at the break, Langer on 46 and Hayden on 42. Once again, South Africa have failed to make an early breakthrough. 13 boundaries and a six is showing the aussies confidence, against a pretty poor bowling attack.
Samething continuing after lunch both Langer and Hayden have bought up their 50s 0/129.
Kallis is getting smashed around after lunch.

Australia:
0/187
J.Langer: 100* Great knock champ :)
M.Hayden: 80*
Cruising...:)
Langer has just posted his century. Well done mate. Off just 145 balls, hitting 16 4's and 1 6, great performance. Lets just hope that Hayden can bring his century up soon as well. Hayden is currently on 80 so his century probably won't happen until after the tea break.
Great knock. But i got this feeling that Haydens gonna get out be4 his ton. hope im wrong:(
Hayden is pretty close now 97*, go son, do it for your country
Another ton for Matty Hayden, well done mate.......
0/215 at tea....

Its getting boring dominating!
Maybe we should give South Africa a chance...
Nah, we'll keep dominating. :D
Bloody crowd has been brilliant so far, the standing ovations for both batsmen's centuries was great.

Pretty reasonable preformance by the openers so far, although to be fair, it looks like Glen McGrath would be good for a 50 on this deck. SA quicks seem to have the plan of tossing in the odd wide one hoping for a mis hit drive.

Great Innings for hayden, played very well for his 105
Punter got off the mark with a very good 4
1/223
I hope Punter goes on to score a ton, and Langer a double ton;)
Now 4/302
Steve Waugh just bowled by Pollock
Ponting run out earlier by Langer and Langer caught at silly point off of Boje who has bowled pretty well. Which has made me wonder why it took so long for him to be bought on.

I havent seen a ball bowled today but by all accounts MH has scored another century!!}:D
I remember absolutely bagging him a few seasons back when he was bowled by not offering a shot { Twice I think}
But now as I choke on humble pie he seems to have arrived.
Welldone Matthew Hayden -I was one of your detractors:mad:
Never underestimate a Queenslander. Hayden has been my favourite player for QLD for years, and I always knew he would come good. He has been my favourite player for Australia since his first game, right up until now, and he certainly is not letting me down.

Certainly Hayden and Langer have been the star Australian players of the summer. I suspected that Langer may have been found at some point of the summer but I was wrong.
Yet, once again Australia's top order fail to capitalise on a 200+ opening stand. Of the four times this has occurred this summer, today was the third time that Australia lost their next 5 wickets for less then 100.
But Australia should still win.
Its been awesome seeing Langer and Hayden combining this summer!!
Its just a pity that once they get out so many wickets start to fall in quick succession (like we saw today)

It's happened several times this season. Complacency possibly?
I was at the MCG for the 3rd day last week, and quite a few of the shots players got out to were lazy and undisciplined.
Still, you can't be too critical, when they've got South Africa on the ropes again.

Yet again the LITTLE AUSSIE BATTLER has come to the fore.It still amazes me that there can still be knockers out the who do not believe that he is a class player.Oh by the way i am talking about Justin Langer. He was crucified a few years back after his first test against the Windies and then the following tour of NZ.He should have gone to England but the selectors believed that there were too many LEFT handers in the side at that stage for him to go.What a load of crap.
Go for it JL,load em up and fire away.

I was another who thought the SA seamers might find Langer out, but he's come through well.
Now, if he can only get the 'Graham Wood' syndrome out of his game and stop running Punter out, I'll be even happier for him.
On those middle order collapses, my theory is subconsciously the 3-6 batsmen relax a little when they see the openers score so easily and aren't totally switched on when their turn comes to bat. Except Ponting, who doesn't get a chance to settle, he get's called through for suicidal runs by a maniac hell bent on keeping the strike!!! ;) ;) :p
I think the main reason for the aussie middle order collapsing after such great opening stands is because the guys who come in (ponting, waugh brothers etc) arn't getting any time in the middle with the bat. It's not that they are out of form, they are just out of match practice if you know what i mean. It's also hard to come in and bat once you have seen hayden and langer smashing the ball around for four and a half hours. If i was in ponting's shoes, i would no doubteldy just sitting back relaxing and watching the great performance. So by the time they have to bat, they arent mentally prepared anymore and just assume that they will score and heap of runs too.
Gilchrist just got out......adding 34 runs to the total
Lunch day 2 Aus 7/439 with Martyn on 57, Lee on 0.
Shane Warne got a quick fired 37 runs.
7/500 ........ how good are we?????
Or is it, how bad is South Africa?????
Australia is all out for 554, let's see what the South African's have in reply.........
Boje certainly out did Henderson.
Bowlers: O M R W Econ

A bit of both, but perhaps slightly more the latter due to Pollock's hopeless captaincy. Why did it take so long for him to bowl Boje yesterday?

As I write, South Africa have lost 3 quick wickets. A good chance this match could be over by tomorrow.
SAF 4/79
MacGill and McGrath with 2 each I think.
4/91 McGrath just about to bowl last over of the day.

Excellent batting by Langer, Hayden and Martyn. Glad that MacGill got a shot in this test match - giving the selectors the rewards with his 2 wickets today.
The testmatch will be all over before lunch on Day 4.

HAHA!!! Loving it! Let's just enjoy those Proteas floundering about while we can. Dismal performance by Pollock - Kallis didn't deserve more than 10 overs, and he refused to bowl the spinners in tandem, which looked ridiculous when watching MacGill and Warne dominate the batsmen this afternoon.
This series may end a few South African careers (Klusener, Dipennaar, Ntini) and at the very least the confidence will be shattered for the return leg. :) :)
My highlight of todays highlights?
Magill actually smiling...theres hope yet:D
South Africa have already lost 2 early wickets this morning, i highly doubt this game will make it to a fourth day

Boucher is keeping SA in teh game somewhat....8 for 141. If he can stay there and the other bloke can stay at the wicket, then they might be a chance to avoid the follow on. unlikely tho

SA. All out 154, 20 minutes before lunch.
Killing them. Great to see, however, the boys will be back on day four. I don't believe that we will get them all out before the end of the days play. I hope we do, but I can't see it happening.
0/11 in the second innings
Shane Warne took the new ball before lunch with Glenn McGrath.
Probably need to have a pretty big 1st innings partnership to be any chance of saving the match but i can't see it happening.
Gibbs just bowled by Lee off stump knocked right out of the ground which has become rare these days.
South Africa 1/17, Gibbs was bowled by Lee for 10. Go aussie go.

1/17 now....Lee just knocked Gibbs stump out of the ground!! And with dipenaar in i feel it will be something like 2/25 shortly!!!
Mark Waugh just dropped a sitter in the slips.........Kirsten should be back in the changing rooms

Good effort by the ja-jas in the middle session...oz will need to lift in the final session, but the SA are still a long way behind.
dippenaar(?) has batted well, which should stick it up a few of his critics...
Dippenaar gone off a MacGill full toss which went straight down the throat of Ponting.
He batted well for his 74 though.
Score now 2/185
I will make another prediction. Australia will bat again. We may not have much to chase, but I reckon we will bat again in this match.
2/209 at stumps. Kirsten - 82 not out, Kallis, 32 not out.
Good recovery from South Africa, and we may have to bat again, however it would need a miracle for South Africa to win.
The ACB would be very happy as they'll be able to have another day of profit tomorrow, when it was looking like the game would be over by stumps today.
Kallis, Kirsten and McKenzie will have to make most of the runs if we are to bat again. Kirsten looked a lot better today. Kallis generally plays Warne well and has performed in the other two second innings this series.

Good comeback by the Boks! If they can slog out Day 4 the ACB might even be able to get the crowds to come on the final day of play (if required). The first session tomorrow will be the key, if Australia doesn't get 2 or 3 wickets I've got a feeling we'll have to bat again - hopefully not chasing anything around the 120 mark, a la 1993.
Hasnt cricket really gone down hill in South Africa...??
However, a good recovery by SA and i think we will bat again in this game
Gotta love giving crap to the South Africans at work though, makes my day :D :D

I was thinking the same thing just an hour ago. We were in a winning position and should of won in India, but surely it can't happen to us again, especially at home!
But the Boks got us in 1993 when we were only chasing a small total. 2 days of good test match cricket to follow.

If Australia keep bowling the crud they were yesterday in the SA second dig, there's every chance they'll be chasing 150 odd. That'll get a few hearts palpitating.

And as I posted that last one, I hadn't even turned the cricket on.
Kallis is out, he's been their best bat all summer so I'm breathing a little easier.
Kirsten batted well for his hundred.
McKenzie and Kirsten still going well 3/270
SAF 4/331

4/345
its now 6/372
warne got ontong from a dubious lbw decision in my opinion
macgills just bowled kirsten who dragged a very wide ball onto the stumps, gone for 153
They lead by 3, and we will bat again.

Whilst Hayden as the leading run scorer (ie. 403 runs @ 107.5) would have been my choice for player of the series, how unlucky is Martyn topping both the batting (ie. 299 runs @ 149.5) & bowling (1 wicket @ 4) averages for both sides?
Also, interesting that Aussies only had 3 batsmen averaging over 40 for the series. Is it time for Ponting to be swapped with Martyn in the order, &/or should someone else (eg. Katich, Lehmann, Love) come in for M Waugh?
So how did your predictions go?
