Well....what can you say after that. I cant recall ever seeing a more inept display of football from our club ever. Especially at home. Heartless, gutless, skill-less, pathetic football.

Full credit to the Bulldogs. They just ran rings around us all day. They have a gameplan that we have no idea how to counteract. They had loose midfielders all over the ground all day long.

To be 69 points down at home about 13 minutes into the second quarter...Ive never seen anything like that before. We literally looked like a bunch of boys who had never seen a football before. Disastrous skills by hand and foot by almost everyone, complete lack of any sort of defensive pressure, no target up forward and noone in the midfield winning the football. Our matchups were all over the place. Noone knew who was on who and noone could keep up anyway.

Yet again we had our token 20 minute display of decent football. Im glad they actually changed it up a bit and played half on that in the third quarter. Then it turned to poo again. So many players dropped their heads in that last quarter.

As I said last week, playing completely heartless football like this is not the way to win new members. Ill be surprised if we get 15,000 next week.

Too many passengers. Cassisi was given a bath by Johnson before going off. Bishop was killed by Hahn early. Kane Cornes needs a reality check. That was the single worst performance by a footballer parading around acting like an A-grade player. How many turnovers by foot did he have today? Id be surprised if he had any more than about 5 effective disposals. Dew did nothing again. Mahoney did nothing again.

Similar to the last few weeks, its been the same handful of players to try and win us the game. Chad is just about the best tall utility in the game at the moment. Shaun made some errors but at least won the football in the middle. Lade was excellent again. Those one handers were great. Pearce tried hard all day again. A couple of others did reasonable in White, P Burgoyne. Thats about it.

Some hard decisions need to be made now. Mark is completely failing at motivating the current crop of players. They look disinterested and arent playing for each other. Too many players appear to be taking shortcuts. Its time for the coaching staff to start making tough decisions and dropping those players that arent doing their job. Bring in some kids that want to play and our willing to get dirty and drop those senior guys that have it too easy at the moment.

We the supporters need to see that the club will try and stop that sort of crap from ever happening again.

Player Reviews:

Bishop - You can see he's trying but theres no result. Was given a bath by Hahn early and Robbins touched him up after half time.

P Burgoyne - 33 Disposals, but I cant remember much of what he did. Defiantely not a lot of effective disposals moving forward like a couple of years ago.

S Burgoyne - Made a couple of mistakes but all in all he played well today. Got us going in our run on and tried to create as much as possible. Has definately lifted his game a level this year.

Cassisi - Thrashed by Johnson in the first quarter and a bit before coming off with an injury.

C Cornes - Seemed to more of the ball than what he did, but he used almost every possesion well. His move to the forward line gave us a marking target to kick to. Good game

K Cornes - Cant remember him every playing such a bad game before. Atrocious disposal almost every time he touched it. Is a mile off ever becoming a leader at our club.

Dew - Little impact again. Time to go Stuey.

Kingsley - Decent at times. Some absolute shocking decisions though.

Lade - Just continues to dominate. Excellent marking in defence, great ruckwork and a couple of one handers to end the match.

Lonie - Was pretty good today I thought. He's going better than I thought he would.

Mahoney - 19 disposals and 8 marks, but like Peter, I cant remember much of what he did.

Motlop - King of the Pretendors. Porthos got his wish as Motlop was played down back. Ive never seen a player look more lost. Had no idea where his opponent was at any stage. Has to be dropped.

Pearce - Thank god for the little rocket. Continues to impress every week. Tries his heart out. Many players with much more experience should take a look at how he plays.

Pettigrew - Was pretty good. Best game for the year. Had a real crack when up forward and had some decent disposals.

Salopek - Reasonable. Not a big impact but is finding the football.

Surjan - Up and down. Used the ball pretty well, chased and tackled pretty hard. I dont like him in defence. He gets caught ball watching and a few times his opponent snuck away from him for an easy mark because of it.

Thurstans - Cant fault his game today. A couple of strong marks and a goal. Did well.

Tredrea - Badly out of form. Isnt getting near the footy at the moment. Worst thing is he is lacking leadership. Gone at the moment are his inspirational feats of years gone by. Whether its a lack of fitness or a bad slump, hes not playing well.

Wakelin - Didnt do a whole lot. Thats it.

Walsh - Terrible disposal for the second week now, limped off in the second half.

White - Arguably his best game. Took some good marks, presented well and kicked three goals. Great game Whitey.

Wilson - Looked unfit and ran around like a headless chook for a fair bit of the game. Will be better for the run.

Good to see you put in more effort than the players today Macca. Still two lines would've got you over that threshold. ;)

Lonie would never ever be in a side I picked, but that's just me.

14 May 2006, 18:12
Yeah, I think Lonie did some good things. People in the outer have a cry about his efforts in marking contests and what not, but that's not his game and never will be. He's a wingman who should bomb it long at every opportunity, and that he does pretty well. In a perfect world he could hold his own in marking contests, but again in a perfect world Tredders would have his boot.

Even though Peter Burgoyne racked up 30+ possies, I thought he was terrible.

Can't say I saw him win the ball in traffic or out of the centre.

His brother Shaun on the other hand, sparked us in that third quarter.

FFS - leave Shaun in the middle!

He's the only midfielder we've got who can create play!

Did you guys think it was a massive error from Williams to not start Cornes forward?Turned the game up forward for you last year against us.

14 May 2006, 18:50
Personally I think having Chad at Full Forward is a wasted move. Yes it worked for a while today, but if he is to play forward it has to be at CHF. The last couple of weeks hes been moved forward and hasnt had a kick because the ball has gone nowhere near him.

I dont think it would have mattered much early today either.

Dog Town I personally thought this was a risky move. Yes it gave us backbone up front but left a quivering mass at CHB which you guys ran through like butter. He can't play everywhere, more's the pity....

With Harris holding Tredders I thought you got back into it when Cornes went forward just as you did last year.Atleast have him in a KP.Why use a guy who is IMO in the best few KPP going around in a position that can be played by any number of players.Similar to when Connolly was playing Pavlich as a midfielder.Pearce was good for you blokes I thought. He almost ran down Mcmahon which is nothing to scoff at.

Well....what can you say after that. I cant recall ever seeing a more inept display of football from our club ever. Especially at home. Heartless, gutless, skill-less, pathetic football.
The question is "why"
Some hard decisions need to be made now. Mark is completely failing at motivating the current crop of players. They look disinterested and arent playing for each other. Too many players appear to be taking shortcuts. Its time for the coaching staff to start making tough decisions and dropping those players that arent doing their job. Bring in some kids that want to play and our willing to get dirty and drop those senior guys that have it too easy at the moment.
One has to ask whether Choco has lost the support of the players.
P Burgoyne - 33 Disposals, but I cant remember much of what he did. Defiantely not a lot of effective disposals moving forward like a couple of years ago.
I've liked Peter Burgoyne's efforts in the last few weeks. He's kept trying and is one of the minority that is trying to stem the tide. Ditto for Junior. If PB is getting his hands on the ball but the team around him is putting in a 50% effort he's going to waste a lot of possessions. That's not his fault
Wilson - Looked unfit and ran around like a headless chook for a fair bit of the game. Will be better for the run.
Why do we persist with putting players who've been out for more than two weeks straight back into the side? They should be coming back through the feeder club once they've proved they are fit and in form.

With due respect to Wilbur it smacks of gold cardism. Is this part of the reason why the players lack motivation?

Players who stood up today

Lade, C Cornes, S Burgoyne, D White, P Burgoyne, D Pearce. A few others were OK at times but that's about it.

Awful rubbish. Do I even need to say anything else?

Player Reviews:

Bishop - Adequate but not against an attack of that dimension. Won some aerial contests and a spoiled a few marks. Useful in some of the defensive firefights.

P Burgoyne - Worked pretty hard and by no means our worst.

S Burgoyne - A few classy results and kept his head up.

Cassissi - Dreadful, then injured.

C Cornes - Classy but as usual moved around from spot to spot as Chocco tried to put out fires.

K Cornes - Plenty of possessions but ineffective with them, as usual.

Dew - Useless and a dreadful choice against a fast running team like the Dogs.

Kingsley - Good to see someone who didn't panic, but in the end his disposal stuff-ups cancelled that out.

Lade - Very good. Effectively our captain, not just in results but general presence. You can see him barking instructions to those nearby.

Lonie - Just what does this guy have against tackling/checking his opponent?

Mahoney - Ferocious and skillful but worked so hard early I guess he was unable to sustain it or was injured, because I don't remember seeing him later.

Motlop - Took a mark about the middle of the 4th quarter and the crowd roared like he'd kicked the winning goal. We were being sarcastic Daniel. Worst player on a senior list.

Pearce - Heart the size of Jupiter. Busted his guts. The trade-off for his tremendous speed is his slight build, which enables tackles to be shrugged off quite easily. Unsurprisingly one of our best.

Pettigrew - Pretty good. Some disposal and tackling issues but was no orphan.

Salopek - Active but for every clever thing he does he makes a klutzy error. In a good team he'd be developing quickly now.

Surjan - Worked hard and not daunted but as Macca19 says he has to be responsible for his opponent.

Thurstans - Sort of justified his spot up forward. I'm not able to report on him in an unbiased way.

Tredrea - Ineffective as a player, no visible leadership displayed in action or by voice.

Wakelin - Quite good I thought. Picked off some crucial passes. Well not really crucial as we were so far behind it didn't matter. But nice.

Walsh - I thought he was OK early but it's academic as he was injured.

White - Looked really good and lifted more and more as the game went on.

Wilson - Like Kingsley his maturity is valued but his body is past it.

Yep its certainly a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul. I think now its time to get chad to CHB leave him there - let the kids (i.e thomson, ebo, thomas, lower, ebert salopek etc) have some time in the middle. Lets see how good they are... Really what do we have to lose ???

First things first: in our team statistics mean Nothing! For the first time ever I don't even bother looking them up any more.

Lonie is not playing well. It's just that so many of his teammates are playing as badly or worse.
He fumbles any ball that involves an opponent closer than 5m to him. His tackles are always broken. His kicking and run are nowhere near the level expected of him. He should not be getting a game above our youngsters.

Unfortunately, the same applies to
Mahoney - where has all the defensive pressure gone Josh? Forget his touches, he was played mainly from HF. He failed to hold the ball in. Poor.

Motlop - well he got played down back. The next step is for him to be dropped to the SANFL for a very long time. Has embarrassed our guernsey too many times.

Dew - not the worst, but if he is injured and can't play four full quarters or chase opponents, he should be rested. Waste of space.

Tredders - let's cut the excuses. He was out for 5 weeks, he has been back for 4. From what I understand he is doing all the training. Why then is he looking so unfit out there?
OK, he might be injured, then he either shouldn't play or at the very least if he does play, he needs to show LEADERSHIP. Warren has forgotten what that means during his own troubles. Chad and Lade are the only visible leaders out there. Warren, you must make a stand.

Bishop - has just got to make way for a kid who is going to play for us in the longterm. We are wasting space and time by playing him.

Walsh, Cassisi and Kane Cornes - all were dreadful in the first half. Just dreadful. Mind you they spectated very well.

IMO, Pearce and Surjan were the only two players running to contests in the first half. Lade was very good, but those two little guys were trying to get to the footy and were chasing. No-one else did anything but watch. I couldn't believe how lazy we were. Kane Cornes must have dawdled to so many loose balls to allow his opponents to get to it first, and I saw Salopek copying his poor example.

Where has the forward line pressure gone?
How can we have so few players around the ball, and still not be able to find guys to man up as the ball is run down the line?
Why do our guys refuse to run either to chase, man up or create options?
Why aren't all of our players on incentive based contracts? Lose by more than 4 goals and you don't get paid - simple as that.

No words can describe the embarrassment of the last three weeks.
Changes now at all levels are imperative.

WARNING........CONTROVERSIAL COMMENTS. MAY POSSIBLY OFFEND

Disgusting. Deplorable. Embarrassing. Humiliating. Unacceptable.
Add whatever superlatives and adjectives you like .
For the third time in the first seven weeks of this season, we have had our pants pulled down and our arses comprehensively spanked by a laughing stock club or a club that owes its continuing existence in the AFL competition to that socialist dictatorship device known as the Competitive Balance Fund and Victorian dominance of the administration refusing to move with the times and reduce the number of clubs in the so-called home of the game.
This is shaming our club, our guernsey, our history and our tradition in a way that no ' dyed in the wool ' Port Adelaide person can sit back and ignore any longer.

You simply do not - in your 10th year in this caper - allow clubs such as Footscray, who cannot even ' pay the rent ' in this comp without the assistance from the AFL drip feed - come to your home ground and wipe the floor with you and treat you with utter contempt.
Heads must roll before this club becomes a complete joke, on field, off field, and on the terraces. And they must roll NOW. Not at the end of the year, not next week. NOW.

I have my own theories on these performances. I am of the opinion that the players are making a statement that Williams has lost them mentally and every other way, and until he goes, these performances will continue, in ever increasing magnitude, until the penny drops at board level that they no longer respect him and no longer wish him to be the club's senior coach.
Action has to be taken immediately, if this in fact the case - or the club will completely implode.

Greg Boulton. Grow some balls. Alaistair Clarkson is out of contract at Hawthorn at season's end. Ring him first thing tomorrow, and keep at him, to court him for the senior job from 2007. And get in Damien Hardwick's ear as well. With these two as senior coach and assistant, this club will arrest the slide and regain respect.
Give Mark Williams the boot now and appoint Dean Bailey immediately as caretaker coach till season's end. Bailey could not do any worse, and this season is already a write off.

Mark Williams. F*** off now. If Boulton hasn't got the balls to sack you, do the honourable thing and resign. You have nothing more to offer Port Adelaide.
Your bamboozling game plan, coaching ineptitude, and abject ' I've won a premiership so I know it all ' all encompassing attitude of arrrogance are not needed here. We need a coach who has the ability to develop our young list, not send ambitious, talented kids on a pointless ' revolving door ' ride to save and assuage the reputations and sensitivities of your ' gold pass ' club Stop desecrating your father's memory by ripping apart the very fabric he built this proud club around. F*** off to Collingwood where you can be Pighead Ed's bum boy / lap dog.
We don't need you, or want you, here any longer.

Player Reviews:

Bishop - Pension time. No ifs, no buts. Time to go. Now.

P Burgoyne - A classic case of ' little boy lost ' . Gets plenty of the pill, but gets himeslf completely confused as to what he should do with it. A result of poor coaching and stupid game plans. What a waste of an exceptionally talented player.

S Burgoyne - One who could hold his head high. One wonders how much longer his shoulders are going to be able to cope with the weight of carrying the team.

Cassisi - See Peter Burgoyne. A good player being ruined by a d ickhead coach with a stupid defensive mindset. Has at least a month with a medial ligament injury to ponder his future.

C Cornes - Tried in vain to lift the side by example. Must be getting very, very frustrated.

K Cornes - Something is definately wrong here. Suspect more than meets the eye.

Dew -Clearly unfit. Eckermann, Thomson, Ware, Ezard can all fit similar roles. But we all know why they don't get the gig.

Kingsley - Pension time. Past his use - by date by two years. Time to go.

Lade - No brainer for the Jack Cahill Medal.

Lonie - Needs someone to stand behind him and give him a foot up the arse every time he fails to automatically boot the thing 70 ards every time he gets it. Has no other use.

Mahoney - Gutsy little trier who gives his all every week, but lacks support. Another suffering from ineptitude in the coaches box - although this is on the part of McGuinness, who has absolutely NFI about the concept of crumbing, and that this is Josh's forte.

Motlop - F*** off back to the Panhandlers. What a waste of a trade.

Pearce - Probably the pick of the new brigade at this stage. Goes at 100 mph all day.

Pettigrew - Can't say as I honestly saw much of him.

Salopek - More of Williams' lip service failing to materialise. " Steven Salopek will form part of our new midfield ' . So what's the deal with him spending half of each game thus far plucking splinters out of his arse?

Surjan - He could have got 45 possessions. It would not matter. Will ride the revolving door back to Alberton next week, regardless.

Thurstans - Had a crack. Will experience an exponental change in attitude and endeavour once Williams is flicked. Another player wasted by Williams' ineptitude.

Tredrea - Needs a boot up the arse, and fast. Perhaps he thinks along similar lines as Williams - i e " now I've got the #1 jumper officially, I know it all and all I have to do is turn up". Newsflash, sonny boy. It doesn't. Pull your f***ing finger out.

Wakelin - Swamped by an onslaught. Didn't stand a snowflake's chance in hell.

Walsh - Unsighted, then injured.

White - Take a good, hard, long look, Williams. The kid can mark. The kid can kick goals. The kid can play. With a bit of luck, you will not be able to derail his progress any further with your stupidity.

Wilson - Pension time. Symes should be fit to resume next week. Sad as it is, his time has come. Goodbye.

Well, I was at the game today, and made special note of the defensive work of players off the ball.

Matthew Bishop, you are a :D:D:D:Ding fraud. Macca19, you say that Hahn gave Bishop a bath early...how could you know that? Bishop only followed him to the tip of our defensive 50 and then stood around pulling his undies out of his arsecrack the rest of the time, then made a half-hearted effort to help cover someone else's man (he'd lost his own) every time the Dogs sent the ball forwards. How Choco engineered things so that Bishop was our loose man in defence, I have no firetrucking idea.

Not watching the game on TV, however, it was easy not to be aggravated at Motlop, because on the field he was invisible.

I'd review the rest, but it may wait for later posts or not come at all, as the new swear filter is there entirely to annoy anyone that gives a stuff about their football.

I could only catch the end of the second quarter, as i did last week. Didn't find out the final score, but i assumed we played great! Well done fellas! We're really gaining momentum now!

Also, the team has really addressed those inconsistency problems!

I'll also add that Salopek is not as clever as we sometimes give him credit for.

One piece of play that stuck in my mind was one where he watched about four contests, that he could've made it to, go against us in a row, while jogging down the middle of the ground, resulting in a Bulldogs goal. He didn't even position for a receive. Did he think it would be rude to get involved?

When he has the ball he has fast hands though, but if he isn't willing to be more active in his play, he won't be more than an average player.

He spectated alot today.

Shaun Burgoyne's goal in the second quarter was initiated by a Salopek handball under pressure from Cooney, but in the seconds before Salopek took possession of the loose ball, he looked for all money as though he was just going to stand by and watch.

I couldn't believe how many contests and loose balls we went half-pace at. Even when chasing, our players jogged after their man instead of really putting in.

How any footballer could make so little visible effort and still have some self-respect and pride left behind is beyond me.

I thought he did well in the second quarter from the centre square. Actually rushed to the ground ball and extricated some handballs. Maybe it was the result of watching the first quarter trash his teammates served up from the bench, but when he came on, he seemed to take the bull by the horns and try to lift us. Pretty impressed by that considering the lack of leadership from his senior peers.

Try
2000 V Ess at Docklands. 1st game at that venue and the debut of our possession game.
2004 V Kangaroos at Docklands. At least we had injuries as some excuse.
2005 V WCE at Subi. That was a disgrace
2005 V Adelaide Last years SF, now that was pathetic and inept.
Today's game was woweful, but I thought I'd remind people it's not the first time and might not be the last for a while unless some big changes occur.

Goodbye.

Well I have now seen the last quarter, followed by most of the first quarter minus the bits where I was falling asleep. It was late and I had one of those big weekends.
Then finally I saw the second, minus when I was going outside for a smoke. I haven't seen the third and quite frankly if I am watching TV when it comes on I'll look at it, but I will not go out of my way trying to see it.

Review.

Quite frankly I am unable to do a player review. It was exactly like everyone has been saying. Some tried hard, some were missing, some gave the appearance of being disinterested. Appearance being the key word as I am sure they do care as much as the spectators do if not more so.

The real review is that there were 22 players out there but I could not see a team.
IMO that is the biggest insult one can level at a team but it is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
This is beyond players being out of touch, players not being fit or gold pass holders. It is to do with team organisation and it is beyond a joke.

Just like Porthos has said many times, Choco is not guilty of not trying out things, he seems to be guilty of doing that incessantly. So much so that the players seem to have no idea where they are supposed to go next that they get lost.
Trying to work out who was supposed to be where when on TV was next to impossible.
A player in a team on fire will dish out a pass without looking and miraculously hit a team mate on the chest because they play as one. That is a beautiful feeling and great to watch.
I have two words for our players. FORGET IT.
It just ain't going to happen this year unless something changes in a big way.

Our much maligned forward line was actually quite good IMO.
Apart from Tredrea going for too many passes and getting in the way of others (he'll get better) we were actually quite good up there WHEN given a chance.

Question for Choco regarding the forward line.
Our forwards were doing ok when given a chance. Why the frig did we need to rotate others such as Shaun and Chad through there when they were needed elsewhere? Are we playing in such an anally retentive way that the players MUST rotate in a pre planned way regardless of what is actually happening in the game?

Our backs.
Who was on which player? Who were our backs? The number of times they had loose forwards was a joke. Occasionally we got to see a "long shot" and our players were bunched together (with no opposition near them) in some other part of the field.
Question for Choco.
Were they discussing rotations?

Our midfield.
We seem to have players that are given attacking jobs.
We also seem to have players that are given totally negative jobs, plus Chad who is in there to bash and crash.
Why the appearance of such strict demarcation lines? Every player that Kane gets to tag nowadays seems to be instructed to stay forward. Probably means that he will only get say 6 to 8 effective touches rather than the usual 14 or more, but it will be 6 effective touches to 0 for Kane. Same goes for Cassisi this year.
They are both doing well, BUT given the circumstance we are effectively sacrificing 2 of our best players to reduce the opposition team's output from 2 of their best players to the equivalent of 3/4 of one.
That is 3/4 of one to our none. We lose.
Question for Choco
Have the other coaches worked you out wrt the way you use Dom and Kane? Are we going to change or is it the players fault as per usual?

We cannot blame the players now. We are one third of the way through the year and the players seems to have difficulties in working out how they fit in with one another.
That usually gets worked out during pre season.
Coaches tell players the strategies, the players deliver them.
No strategies, bad strategies, hard to carry out strategies or confusing strategies backfire and make the players look bad.
Our players are looking very, very very bad at the moment with the exceptions mostly being the players who have been given clear jobs to do. Our ruckman, our full back, Chad the harasser, plus Shaun and Pearce who are probably young enough to accidentally not follow the rules and regulations too strictly.

End of rant.

I see what you're getting at, but I think they're simply the guys who realize you can do more than sit around and pout while you're losing (which you alluded to with Shaun and Pearce)

On Kane - atleast he went forward with his kicking, he would have had a fair amount of inside 50s. His handballing is below average, needs work. His attack on the ball was good.

This game must be one of the most disgusting performances that I have witnessed from the Port Adelaide Football Club.

Something needs to be done and done sooner than later. Why are we continually rotating our players??

Guarantee that Surj and White will be back in the SANFL this week.

What has happened to the fighting spirit that we were known for. We were always the hunted now we are becoming the laughing stock of the AFL.

Could Choco be the first coach to take us from a Premiership and then 2 years later to the wooden spoon? We were very lucky last year to have made the top 8.

Its time the supporters stood up and demanding answers from the heirachy.
What do they intend to do in the way that we are being coached. Its about time that they looked outside the box and went elsewhere. Approach Clarkson. He is out of contract end of season.

Choco has had in day in the spotlight, now its time to step aside and let someone else take over the team.

And no, Im not the only one that agrees with this. Sitting there watching that pathetic performance and heading back to the car, people around us were saying the same thing. SACK CHOCO NOW

If people want Choco sacked then can they please give the club $750,000+ to pay him out! Sacking coaches mid season doesn't work these days. It's too expensive. If there is a performance, or non-performance clause then maybe there is some flexibility. You might have to wait until mid 2007 when the club refuse to reappointed him due to poor results and he copies Ayres and walks.

Remember 2000 when we were 1-10 and a draw? It's up to Williams to show he has the smarts again to dig himself and the players out of this mess.

I'd rather sack some unmotivated, incapable players from the team before we execute the coach.

Mark would have to sack himself anyway seeing as he seems to be running all the club's football operations. It won't happen even if Alan Scott is ready to sign the cheque as we speak.

All we can hope for are some on field changes will spark a different attitude in how the team plays. Back to some basics with strategy too.

How much do we need a credible football person in the off field department to make football decisions - like when Bucky appointed Alastair Clarkson to the coaching panel. Just shake things up a bit.

NOW.

Not bad, one loss against your rabble in 7 years.
Enjoy the win while you can. Life is such that even when the milk bottle gets shaken up, the cream eventually rises to the top. And the dregs go to the bottom.
Won't be long before normalcy returns. Meanwhile, isn't it about time to go rattling those tins?

If all that you have to offer is that - then two things are obvious.
You either have no idea whatsoever about the game, or you are just pig ignorant.
