Do you think things are the worst they've ever been at the club (since joining the AFL) - or is it too early to say that?

I haven't got a good enough knowledge of your club's history to make a reasonable assessment.

Certainly thought today's - and last week's - efforts were among the worst I can remember seeing from the Power in terms of effort. But I don't remember the club's early AFL years well enough to know if there have been even darker times.

No need to post a new topic... We are certainly struggling but there are plenty of threads already going that you could add to...

No need to get defensive. Believe it or not, it wasn't a troll/gloat attempt.

I thought it was a valid query that I couldn't find a specific reference to in other threads. Perhaps I didn't look hard enough.

I would have thought at different stages in the late 1990s the club had some similarly poor stretches. But I don't really know - hence the question.

Time will only tell but I still think 2000 will remain as our worst year in the AFL

no, in 00, our players still looked like they wanted to be out there and put in alot of effort

I didn't think I'd ever say this :D - but thanks Rory. I was interested in how Port fans rate things at the moment compared with other down times.

Is Port at its lowest ebb?

Nope. Just three bad games in a row. Can happen to anyone.

Let's talk about something else.

As an outsider looking in, I would have agreed. Like you said, just three bad games in a row.

Its a fair question. Its neither now or midway through 2000. Its a tough one. 2000 we had a very young and underdeveloped side, heaped a lot of pressure on some young guys like Tredrea, N Stevens and P Burgoyne and were playing poor footy. Still, you could see we had a good group of youngsters in the making and the second half of the season and what followed from then proved that.

I think our list is in a worse position than it was at 2000. Maybe too early for that call but if this poor form continues over the next month then Id say yes we would be at our lowest ebb.

I can't really remember much of 2000 to be honest. Where were we at round 7 and were the same questions being asked of the players and Choco? I know we had some heavy defeats early on against Essendon and a few losses at home.

At Round 7 we had 1 victory and a terrible percentage of 69.9% We lost to Essendon by 94 points, Carlton by 91 points, were beaten pretty solidly by the Bulldogs and Fremantle (at home, Lades first broken leg), and we blew a 40 points lead against the Crows to lose by 7.

To recall, we really hit rockbottom that year after a loss to the Saints mid-season. We were sixteenth on the ladder. Years later, Primus would say that Darren Mead made a stand in the players' rooms and said that as an old Port Magpies player he couldn't stand to see our club slump so low.

Williams introduced Guerra and later Koula into the playing side and we staged a great come from nowhere win against the Eagles.
We finished the year off with a super showing against the Crows a week after Primus and Burgoyne conspired to beat Carlton after the siren.

Our poor form in 2000 was largely because we were a pretty young side and guys like Stevens, Tredrea, and Peter Burgoyne were yet to become consistent stars.

By the end of this year, we need to unearth some kids with real quality and prepare them to be ready to play finals by 2008. If we can't achieve that and still finish outside the 8, it would have been a dismal failure.

We are at our lowest ebb, because even though we are performing badly, its being magnified by our selection panel continuing to make the same dud decisions week in and week out. If it was just young blokes stuffing up a bit, OK, but its not, and we are being given no reason to expect improvement with this panel in place.

Fair question and yes this is the lowest so far for the Power.
In 2000 we were in a tunnel. It was dark, very dark actually but we knew that sooner or later we would come out of it. As it turned out it was sooner rather than later.

Now we are back in the middle of that tunnel. The main difference is that this time we are not sure if the driver has engaged the forward or reverse gears.

This may be the lowest so far, but unless Choco starts some serious planning for the future it is only going to get worse.
