My family is coming to Australia for my July 1 wedding in Melbourne, and I would like to introduce them all to some live footy. Unfortunately, I just discovered that Essendon does not play at the MCG at all during Rounds 13-16.
This is pretty disappointing because I felt their first exposure to the game should have been against a traditional Victorian opponent at the people's ground.
What do you think? Should I take them to Colonial Stadium anyway, and allow them to experience a somewhat less-special clash with the Demons or Bulldogs? Or hold out until some other time.
I think I'll probably take them anyway.

Congrats on the marriage!
Hope it works out well for ya!
And yes, do take 'em to Colonial cos I reckon it's just as good as the "G"
Takem to colonial. Then take them on the tour of the G. Remember, though, the renovations will be going on at the G so they wont be able to see all of it.

Don`t forget a few quick pots in the locker room. They will love this aspect of proceedings.

Definitely take them to a game at Colonial, I really like watching footy there, also I agree, must have a visit to the Locker Room, I might even be in Melb then if I can afford it, my birthday is the 4th of July, should have been a Yank. :D
Given that half theMCG will be torn down, a Colonial game against Melbourne (Rd 13), the Bulldogs (Rd 15) or Geelong (round 16) should all be big games well worth taking the family too!
It is not unreasonable to expect a full-house (50,000) against Geelong and 45,000 versus the Doggies. Essendon-Geelong games routinely draw 70,000 plus at the MCG.

Why? Do you want to fight in a war or something?

I'll take them anyway.
In fact, it really wasn't ever in doubt, but I needed somewhere to rant about how crappy the draw worked out.
My older brother is coming in but can only stay for a week, so that makes my decision about which one easy (Melbourne). Could be worse I guess (Fremantle, which is what MY first AFL match was).
I had actually forgotten about the MCG renovation. Maybe it's GOOD this happened.
