I just bought the latest Nebula album and wondered if anyone else is into this 'stoner rock' stuff? I've never really listened to much of it (I'm more into hardcore) but it really rocks. I would describe it as a sort of Black Sabbath, Neil Young crossover which works really well.
I'm also interested in other bands like Fu Manchu, so if you've heard this stuff let me know.

cheers.

I've got the 3 Fu Manchu albums, 'In Search Of', 'The Action Is Go!', and 'King Of The Road'. All pretty cool albums, 'King of The Road' is the pick of the bunch. I caught 'em live at The Corner Hotel when they were out here in 2000, and they were brilliant. Nothin' fancy or really original about 'em, they're just a great heavy rock group.

Kyuss is another band worth checkin' out. Haven't heard a lot of their stuff, but what i have is pretty good.

where's wally?

Kyuss are THE stoner rock band. In my view they are (well...were) the best stoner rock band going around. Some of the band of course are now members of Queens of the Stone Age

I never liked Kyuss, hence my recent listening to 'stoner rock'. Wally, I'll check out the Fu Manchu album you suggested.

ps. Nebula are 2/3rds of Fu Manchu.

What a coincidence!

On the way home from work today, I was thinking about trying to sneak a Kyuss album into Wally's dinosaur bands thread, and perhaps discussing the genre a little further!

Kyuss was the premier stoner rock band, with Blues For The Red Sun being by far their best album.
Their off-shoot, Queens of the Stone Age is very disappointing to me - seems a poppy and watered down version, and sound more like the Foo Fighters than Kyuss. Fine, if that's your thing then go for it, but it ain't mine.

One of my favourite bands is Electric Wizard. They are an English three-piece who have four albums out, and have been described in the alternative and metal music press as "the heaviest band in the universe". Their super-heavy, slow and doomy sound makes it hard to argue with that claim...
The intro to "Return Trip" off the Supercoven album would surely have to be the heaviest riff since Black Sabbath's "Symptom of the Universe"!

I saw QOTSA at the last BDO and I agree with you Darky, they were very disappointing after all the hype. I'm not sure why I never really liked Kyuss when I don't mind the genre, but hey, I might have to try again.

ps. Darky, would Electric Wizard compare to Fudge Tunnel at all?

Not really. If anything, Electric Wizard sound like a slowed down and heavier version of Kyuss or Cathedral. Muuuuuch slower... and muuuuuch heavier.

I saw Nebula and thought they were alright. Great riffs and guitar sound but the vocals were a bit weak. Queens of the Stone Age did nothing for me and I didn't think much of Fu Manchu either when I saw them live.

For mine, Monster Magnet are the best band of this genre. Awesome live show when I saw them. Dopes to Infinity was a sensational album. It had that great monster riff sound of Black Sabbath mixed in with a bit of the metal wierdness of Alice Cooper and the Blue Oyster Cult, with just enough punk snot (ala the Stooges) to carry it off. I've heard their latest album isn't that good however.

If you are in Melbourne, check out a band called Dern Rutledge who can probably match it with any of the bands mentioned in this thread.

They're playing Nebula on the PBS metal show RIGHT NOW...

Electric Wizard have a similar-sounding bass, heavier though especially once the guitar kicks in. I agree with Rusty, the vocals sound weak (on this track at least).

I like the sound of Electric Wizard-I'd suggest they'd be big Sabbath fans with that name. I might check them out

Bugger! They cut the song Vinum Sabbathi in half and it stopped about 20 seconds after I posted.

Have a listen anyway if you can - pretty good show tonight. Kyuss is on at the moment.
