View Full Version : Australia in South Africa tour
well seeing as we will most likely whitewas the south africans 3-0 in this series we go to south africa next month
does anyone realise that if that series is a draw then south africa will go to the top of the world test cricket champions table?
we obviously are number one in the world and it will be a travesty if this indeed does happen

Its because we have played less home & away series against "lesser" nations such as Bangladesh under the ICC World Champion formula. Drawing the series to the Kiwis could come back to hurt us, but I reckon with our mental edge over the Proteas the Aussies should win the series in South Africa as well (& remain ranked no 1).
What team would you take to South Africa for the return test matches? If they are picking 14, I think they may take:
1st XI
Hayden
Langer
Martyn (should be batting 3)
M Waugh
S Waugh
Ponting
Gilchrist
Warne
Gillespie
B Lee
McGrath
Reserve Squad Members
Katich
MacGill
Williams (over Bichel)
I think you'll find Macgill is pretty safe to tour.

Blurton,
The only problem is that the pitches there are designed to suit the seam bowling attack of Pollock, Donald & co, so there's no real need for us to take 2 spinners over to South Africa.

The pitches we play on are also ones that are traditionally not turners. but i still reckon MacGill will go.

Macgill is a cert to go, but Kane, there is no way in the world Martyn will ever bat at three for Australia. He has never been and never will be a number three. It just ain't gonna happen...

The reason for this is that the current system works kind of like the tennis rankings system, ie you have to defend your points. The last time the Aussies played in South Africa, they won 2-1. So a drawn series would be a worse result for us AND a better result for Sth Africa.
This system is only in place though till 2005 when all countries will have played each other home & away at least once.
