Williams keen to stick with Port
4:27 PM May 19
Port Adelaide coach Mark Williams says he hopes to extend his contract when it expires at the end of next year.
Williams and his players are under extra pressure after a poor start to the season, having won just two of their first seven matches.
The Power coach said there was plenty of unfinished business, starting with a win against Brisbane at Football Park on Sunday .
"I certainly have a contract to the end of next year," he said.
"I'll be fulfilling that to the best of my ability, [in a way] that does the best thing for Port Adelaide Football Club, for its long-term future."
Williams, who coached the Power to the premiership in 2004, said he was keen to remain at the helm.
"If you ask me what I'd like to be doing in five years time, I'd like to be coaching Port Adelaide," he said.

Does that mean Collingwood aren't returning his calls? ;)
I'm happy, particularly since the era of the gold passes seems to be passing (till the next era).

Thank God you're not a chess player. You missed the Bishop.

i think a new coach would do the team a world of good,
williams time is over.

Bingo
Collingwoods resurgence has meant Micks job is safe, so Mark has to stay or look elsewhere and I think he likes to be among friends

I'd suggest he might be starting to find those in short supply here too ...

Go for Sheedy's record Chocco.
Our next home game is against Hawthorn.
I suggest we form a deputation to the Hawthorn coaches box to beg Alaistair Clarkson and Damien Hardwick to come back and take up coaching roles, and save us from five to six years of the same crap as a result of Williams' ineptitude.
Hell, i'll even draw up the contracts. Someone has to take the bull by the horns. Obviously the softkox on the board won't.

Are you honestly convinced Clarkson is worth the trouble? If we are going to get rid of Choco, make sure we get the right replacement this time. Clarkson wanted Thurstans in his squad - now I know GO 161 you hold Williams accountable for ruining Toby's career, but I couldn't stand to see Toby play again this year, let alone again in 2007.

Absolutely convinced Clarkson is the man to take us forward. And if we can snag ' Dimma ' Hardwick as an assistant too, then that's a double bonus.
And i'll reiterate once more - give Thurstans a different coach - one who will give him confidence and encouragement - and he would be a very different player.
Think about it - when was he last playing with purpose? When Clarko was still with us.
Coaching is all about respect and encouragement. Once either of those is lost or non existent, problems ensue.
And I believe the players have lost respect for Williams en masse.

I suppose there's more chance of Clarkson coming back than Josh Carr, but these calls for him to return don't seem terribly realistic to me.
The first obstacle is that Choco is contracted till the end of next year and someone would have to stump up the money to pay out his contract. The second obstacle is that Hawthorn have the inside running on Clarkson's services. Unless there's a palace coup at Alberton Clarkson will be signed up for multiple years before an opening arose at Port. If Hawthorn decide not to hand on to Clarkson you'd have to think pretty carefully about why they might have made that decision.
Also, please, take off your rose coloured glasses about Toby. He's basically not up to it. Choco has given him any amount of encouragement in the past. Gold pass would not have been too strong a term for his continual selection at one stage. Toby has never played "with great purpose" not even when Clarkson was at our club.

Are you related to Thurstans GO161?
He is an absoulte nightmare.. I rarely abuse one of our players - but today - I quite simply had enough... He is :D:D:D:Ding terrible and NOT AFL standard. FFS he doesnt even do anything at Sturt..

As a rule i enjoy reading your posts as your contributions are usually meritorious and well reasoned. However I think with this paragraph mate, you have crossed the border into nonsense land.
A coach giving his player every ounce of opportunity is not leaving him to plod along in the SANFL for 5 YEARS before giving him a crack at AFL level.
Then when he does give him a crack, plays him in a position he is completely unaccustomed to ( forward - Toby is a key tall back ), and sends him straight back to the SANFL when he inevitably fails.
Subsitute any names you like. Damon White, Brett Ebert, Michael Pettigrew, Adam Thomson..... the pattern is exactly the same.
Contrast this to Neil Craig. His rookies are given an assignment, and Craig sticks with them. He mentors them through their mistakes, and doesn't publicly lambast them or shunt them back to the SANFL at the first opportunity to bring back a dud gold pass holder.
People are way too harsh on Toby. Put yourself in his shoes. Would you turn up to work fiull of enthusiasm every day if your boss had no faith in your ability and kept giving you crap jobs instead of utilising your talents?
I think not.
Williams is the broken cog in the wheel at this club - not Toby.

No, I am not related to Toby. But, at the risk of drawing criticism and aggression from some quarters, I have had a lot of involvement in the game at both playing and coaching level and see things from a different perspective to the average fan.
In any case even if you are right and Toby is not up to AFL level, then he's simply fitting the Williams stereotype of playing players not up to it.
Since he darkened our doorstep in 1999 he's certainly given a few players not up to AFL standard more than enough of a go.
To wit:
Shayne Breuer
Nathan Steinberner
Stephen Daniels
Matthew Bishop
Matthew Primus ( post 2004 )
Adam Kingsley
Brayden Lyle ( post 1999 )
Che Cockatoo Collins
Chris Hall
Steven Paxman ( post 2001 )
etc etc.

Actually it was four years before he played an AFL game. You might recall that he was very skinny to start with and had great difficulty bulking up. I seem to recall he also was held back by some injury problems prior to 2003)When he finally made the side he played around ten games in his first season, 2003 and played every game in 2004 despite his output being minimal in many games. 2005 was interrupted by injury IIRC yet he was still picked for ten games so I don't think you can say he hasn't been given every chance to prove himself. You may have a point about him being better suited to defence but really where was there a spot for him when we had Wakelin, Paxman and Bishop as very capable tall defenders not to mention Chad Cornes from 2004 on? You're entitled to your opinion of him but I think it's incorrect.
I also don't agree with a lot of your opinion about Choco's playing of substandard players in the list you mentioned from 1999 on...
Shayne Breuer - played 54 games mostly under Cahill and was delisted at the end of 1999 the year Choco "darkened our door".
Nathan Steinberner - played only 20 games and was delisted in 2001.
Stephen Daniels - played 58 games most of them under Cahill IIRC.
Matthew Bishop - He's past it now for sure and much of last year too but from 2001 to 2004 he was a very fine defender for us.
Matthew Primus ( post 2004 ) - Yep, should have come back through the SANFL last year.
Adam Kingsley - I think Kingers has been a pretty good player for us and don't forget he was delisted and came back motivated and performed well.
Brayden Lyle ( post 1999 ) - Brayden played a few too many games for us no doubt and his disposal was terrible in many of his last twenty odd games.
Che Cockatoo Collins - Fair go! Che had his share of poor games mixed in with a hell of a lot of good football. I'd say he was delisted at the right time.
Chris Hall - I think you're memory's playing tricks on you, he played two games only.
Steven Paxman ( post 2001 ) - Packo could possibly have played one more season for us IMO however in any case he was a fine player even in his last year for us.
I don't think you'll get too much argument that Choco has played various players out of position to their detriment but gee up to the start of last year he made a lot of good calls.

No problem mate - you probably do have a greater knowledge and insight into the game than me. I have not played since year 4 at school - being a soccer head but i love my footy and have feel i do understand plenty of the tactics and so forth.
I take your point on board - but again its not tobys fault he in such poor form or short on confidence - thats the coaching staffs problem. O well - only one way to go (actually we can hit rock bottom this weekend) so l save that phrase for next week.
