Hi all,

I was wondering whats everyones thoughts on this we tend to take our merry time in kicking back into play once the opposition has kicked a point which stops us from catching the opposition off guard and running the ball out quickly to our forwards.

Whats surprising is the coaches havent used this tactic to our advantage is schammer to slow in deciding?

Considering we struggle when teams flood, I reckon getting it out quick would defintely help us as we could beat the flood down the other end. Another reason why I reckon we need a longer kick out of defence than the Scham! I thought both Thornton and Duffman looked good when kicking out of defence vs the Roos, long kicks and direct to team mates!

I agree kanabar. We need a longer kicker, and Johnno would be ideal. But we'll need to clone him so he could then take those effortless marks and then run out of defense.

Some teams set up the zone defense after the point after quicker than others and schammer does try and rush it out.didnt mundy used to take them?i agree although i have no problem with schammer(except this week)we should have a longer kicker doing it

ok i'll play devils advocate here.

Harvey warned rival clubs today (in the Eagle Times lift out) that Fremantle are gradually learning to beat the flood.

So..
One way of beating the flood is to get the ball into our foward line before the flood. To do that you need to keep the opposition in their (own) forward line for as long as possible. Which means dont kick the ball into play until our structure is in place. No good just bombing away from the goal square while the opposition streams back. Suck them into hanging around their forward line, then cut loose with a few possessions and get the ball into our forward with some slick movement. All made possible by doing the unexpected.
Like all set plays you only expect them to work 2 or 3 times a agame. Mess up and you pay dearly.

The alternative is play on quickly but how often do you see no one to kick to in the forward lines days. So just mabey not playing on quickly all the time is not a bad thing.
