View Full Version : What should we be drafting?
It's gonna be a massive draft this year (the 'superdraft' II). Given that we need players in a lot of positions and ignoring the whole draft 'the best available player at the position' argument, what type of player should we be looking to draft?
I personally reckon a big KPP for backline is absolutely essential to our needs and should be catered for first. This is because we should have sufficient younger m/f stocks to be ok (just ok) for the next couple of seasons. But we haven't really got any decent big backmen at the moment and Lance would be much better used in the forward line.

i also reckon we need a big KPP backline player, someone who can match the muscle of powerful forwards
Tough midfielder, Ruckman, KPP backman

Tough midfielder, Ruckman, KPP backman
first 3 picks should be one of each of these
Tough midfielder, Ruckman, KPP backman
In that order?

Chris Judd got any brothers?
Quick midfielders who can bloody use the ball by foot!!!
Just load up on them even later in the draft because the top end is loaded with KPP so some will slip through.

Hartlet and Bower will be long term defenders so we should be looking better next year regardless.

Should we consider trading an early draft pick for a more developed player considering we have such a young team. Lets say we finish 14th should we trade pick 3 for a Goddard or another former high draft pick? Any thoughts!

Given that this draft is supposed to have about 7-9 players better than Marc Murphy, we'd be crazy to trade any pick we get in that region. If anything we should be trying to get another high pick not trading them away.

No the board have insisted that early draft picks be used for young players in the draft.

'Young team' (we are no longer the youngest) does not equal 'good young team'.

I pinched this list from Bibi01,
(draft picks since the snake oil salesman arrived)
and the players are there for the basis of a competitive skilful team.
walker
russell
murphy
kennedy
blackwell
s o'halpin
bower
betts
hartlett
raso
edwards
jackson
batson
bentick
smith
flint
carazzo
a o'halpin
fisher
simpson
Just that we have all this dross (the usual 8 suspects),
filling space, marking time and being injury prone,
hindering the abovementioned players development.
Hartlet and Bower will be long term defenders so we should be looking better next year regardless.
How are they looking? Haven't had time to catch any of the VFL action this year...
If they are going to be at least honest sorta defenders (not looking for Matt Scarlett quality...maybe someone along the lines of...Harris?) then I'm gonna take a quick step back and go...draft Gibbs!:p :p :p
Also to igt22265 i think the big worry about that list is that not enough of them have had 1st team exposure. Also, I ddon't know about the oh'Ailpin brothers. Setanta has had opportunities, but hasn't set the world on fire yet, and doesn't really look like doing so.
If he were firing, that would be awesome. Ideally, you'd play in the forward line, but he could be used as a utility in the backline as well. :)

Tough midfielder, Ruckman, KPP backman
We have a tough midfielder in jesse smith running around on our rookie list, our priority should be a tall defender.
In that order?
Probably in the reverse of that order.
It's obvious we are crying out for a big backman who can actually play.
Then again, if we fix the middle the current backmen don't get found out as often.
I think a backman should be our first pick however.

Our first priority in this years draft has to be a big bodied and skillfull midfielder somewhere around 186-190cm preferably with pace to burn, our KP stocks are pretty good but could maybe use 1 more, we have Hartlett that can really play and is KP size, Bower a bit smaller but still growing so KP size with pace to burn, Edwards same as Bower maybe not as quick, Flint at 188cm has courage to burn and can play taller than his size and in the Ruck stocks we have Aisake who has really come along so far this year and also Batson who although also playing in the Bullants Reserves has made huge progress this year already and also kicked 2 bags of 5 goals in consecutive weeks and at 202cm is a genuine Ruckman that as shown can also play forward, Forward stocks we have in abundance and maybe could trade one of them, although don't know which one, to someone like West Coast for one of there experienced midfielders, maybe even Judd when he next comes out of contract as the Eagles need some forwards to win a premiership. All in all we really need a midfielder to put pressure on the ones we have at the moment as they are way to complacent. So to sum it up Bryce Gibbs at 187cm and 80kg should be our first pick if we get the chance at him as he will be a gun in the future and combined with Murphy will give us a great midfield in years to come. Heres an interview with the young man if you are interested:

It's an impressive resume thats for sure.
Thanks for the update on some of our younger players, let just hope they can develop into what we need as KPP.
So who is better, Gibbs or Hansen?

For Carlton at this point in time we have to take Gibbs no question about it.:thumbsu:

Thats all well and good but Hartlett, Bower, Flint, Aisake & Batson have played a combined total of ZERO games. There is no guarantee any of these guys will make it at AFL level.
Whilst Gibbs will no doubt be a great player, we'd be stupid to pick Gibbs if we thought Hansen (for example) was a better prospect than Gibbs.

i say pick the best player possible with our first pick. with the super draft coming up we cant afford to pick a player to our needs. we need quality!!!!!!! best player possible being either gibbs, hanson thorp etc

I reckon we go for the best talent available for each pick, tall/short, KPP or not...doesn't matter. Why?
Western Bulldogs have proven that you don't need a 6 foot 3 FF and 6 foot 5 100 kg CHF to win games. Adelaide use ROO from FF and because he is a gun player he can kick goals. J Brown when used in the centre square is as good as, if not better than most smaller 'midfielders'.
Bottom line...players come in many shapes and sizes... we simply need talented players

We're most likely going to have the freedom to choose from the top, whether it be Gibbs, Hansen, Thorp, Gumbleton etc.
I reckon, draft tall, so Hansen and pick up the midfielders later in the draft. Hopefully, we can trade for some later picks. I mean I'd be happy with any extra picks in the top 30.
Hansen.. Sellar.. Gibbs.. Our 1st pick = One of these 3. Take your pick. IMO I'd rather have a versatile KPP Hansen. Best in the pool according to mojo.

Agree with that. Take Hansen with our first pick and then load up on mids after that.

So we all agree. Does anyone have Pagan's mob? :P
sorry my fellow Carlton fans i have to disagree.
I c it this way. We need both a good midfielder and a good KPP. Now im no expert but i have seen gibbs on tv and believe me, if this kid is only 17 he has something special
Now don't think i think Hansen is crap, in fact by the reports he sounds awes. Id love both
But id hate to be known as the club in 5 years time that we could have had that star gibbs but took the better than average Hansen and live to regret (like when richmond picked Fiora ahead of pavlich)
Although we need both, id take gibbs. thoughts?
Hansen isn't better then average mate :/ his a gun..

to summarise what you've said here:
* you've seen Gibbs play on TV (probably once) and think he is "something special"
* you've only heard reports on Hansen, yet you believe him to be only "better than average"
Therefore you want Gibbs. You may well be right that Gibbs is the best player, but surely a little more homework is required before making assessments.
Facts are, that our list is poor and is full of unproven kids. There is no guarantee that the likes of Russell, Bower, Hartlett & Blackwell are going to make it at AFL level.
With so many needs we simply have to take whoever we consider to be the best player available at the time, whether it's Gibbs, Hansen, Sellar, Thorp, Gumbleton or Selwood etc.....
Hands down Hansen for mine. It's not like we should be knocking back a CHB at this point anyway, but he's ahead of Gibbs from what I've seen.
Might change after the champs, but I doubt it. I wrote a brief synopsis of my top 3 on the other thread if you're interested.

I reckon we should draft someone that can simply play the game!!!
Seriously a genuine CHB. Lance is doing 2 jobs at the moment going between CHB & CHF.
Is that Hansen from WCE. He is a Victrorian and has said he would like to come back to Victoria one day. He would fit in beautifully alongside Lance who could play half forward and take the lesser opponent.

Ashley Hannsen plays for West Coast, that is correct. The other Hansen is Lachlan Hansen who plays for Gippsland in the TAC Under 18's. Absolute gun KPP who could just about play anywhere down the spine.

We need to start winning enough games to at least attract sponsors and of course members, and with that said our greatest need at the moment is smack bang in the middle of the ground where a midfielder can have an impact almost straight away these days especially ones with the size (80kg 187cm) and immense ability of Gibbs, also the depth in terms of talls in this years draft runs deep and we will no doubt still get a formidable one with our second pick, where as the gun midfielders that is ones that can play from day one and have an immediate impact usually go in the top 10 and as witnessed by the likes of Judd make a big difference to a clubs ability to win games. In terms of Clearances i think we are about 10th or something in the league, but the stat that makes it interesting is that we are second for goals kicked after a quick clearance which shows that we have the goal scoring ability if we can get the quick clearances so therefore a midfielder with ball winning ability in the middle of the ground will give us more value than an extra tall in Defence or up Forward.:thumbsu:

I have a solution. If we win only 3 games this year does that mean we get a priority pick before 1st round. If so then we have both Gibbs & Hansen, for the sake of 1 or 2 more wins I would prefer to win 3 & get the extra pick.
Although I can't see Carlton not trying to win, would be awesome to get both of them.

Stiff they have took away the priority 1st rounders. You would have had the best 2 players in the best draft ever. Maybe would win a game in another 5 years with murphy, kennedy, gibbs, hansen

Well there isn't a Chris Judd in the draft unfortunately. Gibbs will be playing on a flank for two to three years when he comes into the AFL. The best comparison would be Adam Cooney.
If you're looking for a hard, ready to go, bigger midfieldler you'd be looking at a Tom Hislop.
It's possible we could go for Gibbs if we had the first pick because of the deficences you've mentioned, but at the moment Hansen is the better player overall.
It's the old 'needs versus best player' argument I guess. Possible 'Go home' factor also.

I'd also be concerned about that if an non-South Australian team drafted Gibbs. Although he did say that he just wants to play AFL footy, and it didn't really matter where.
God I cant beleive im asking this. But we won too many games to be eligible for a priority this year (presuming we only win 3). Whats the new rule, less than 4 wins two years in a row and last twice for a priority ?
