Am I the only one who can hear that growling sort of noise coming from the crwod? COLLINGWOOD footballer Brodie Holland has faced a Melbourne court on an assault charge stemming from an alleged fight during which he says a woman bit him on the stomach.
The AFL midfielder, his fiancee Sarita Stella and a friend Brooke Hawken have been accused of assaulting the woman after leaving a karaoke bar about 3.30am on December 2 last year.
The assault allegedly occurred when Holland, 26, and his two co-defendants had trouble catching a taxi, Melbourne Magistrate's Court was told.
Police told today's contest mention that Ms Hawken had opened the rear passenger door of a taxi, bumping it into the victim, and the fight developed between the three women.
Holland then allegedly put his arm around the victim's chest and asked her: "What the f**k are you doing you stupid :D:D:D:D?"
The victim allegedly bit him on the side of his stomach.
Holland is accused of punching the woman and police said witnesses described the woman's eyes rolling back after the blow.
Holland is charged with intentionally causing injury, recklessly causing injury, unlawful assault and assault in company.
Ms Stella and Ms Hawken are both charged with unlawful assault and assault in company.
A barrister for the defendants, Tony Burns, said his clients planned to contest the matter on the basis of self defence.
"It's the defence case that he (Holland) is the victim of a nasty assault," Mr Burns said.
Magistrate Jelena Popovic said she did not know who Holland was.
"He's not someone who's known to myself," she said.
She said he was facing an indictable offence and queried the self-defence claim.
"It seems that there is only one alleged victim," she said.
"I am intrigued at the suggestion that there's self-defence raised."
