I'm a country music man - the old stuff, nothing released after probably about 1970 though. Can't stand the Aussie/Nashville twang thats seems so prevalent from our countrys musos. For a few tunes, try http://www.roughstock.com/cowpie/

Cheers

I don't care for country at all. However, the girls are pretty. Sometimes if I am reading or something, I will turn the TV on to the Country Music Channel, mute it, and look up occasionally at the girls.

I have sat in with country bands and understand their basic style. The only chords you will need to know are the "Cowboy Chords" - A, B, C, D, E, F, G. and the minors of these. If you want to change keys, country players add a capo and continue with the same old cowboy forms.

Doing country lead work is easy also. Just play Major Pentatonic scales. For example if you are playing in the key of G, use a G Maj Pentatonic - G, A, B, D & E notes. You may notice these are the same as an E Minor Pentatonic scale (E,G,A,B & D). The pattern will be the same on your guitar. Hope that helps some. Peace,

Mooster

Shinboner, I presume you live in Melbournio and are therefore going to see/have seen Ryan Adams and the Sweetheart Revolution (sounds like someone taking pity on Prince's old backing group and gving them a job). Give me the dirt if you have or are. I trust your taste.

On the topic of Mr Adams, am I alone in thinking Gold was a bit of a disappointment? Apart from the slower tunes the rest is 1970s American rock by numbers - he gets all the good bits of about 15 tunes, chucks them in a blender and VOILA - here's yer album.

He has apparently recorded more bummer music, like the magnificent Heartbreaker, with one of Dylan's old guitarists which will be included on a new album to be called Cut and Paste and it's the bummer music I dig.

Still, I am very envious of those who can get along to the show.

Oh yes, I'll be at Ryan Adams and I'll post a review.

And no, it's not only you that is disappointed with Gold. It's catchy, but not that memorable.....and I tend to change CDs halfway through it. With "Heartbreaker", I have to be in the mood to listen to it....it's just too depressing....hardly the kind of stuff you want to hear when driving around on a summer day.

I think his best stuff was with Whiskeytown.....I adore the "Pneumonia" album. I'm going to have to get the two earlier albums as well.

It's kind of funny how Joe Pernice and Ryan Adams both released a depressing album (Chappawhateveritis Skyline/Heartbreaker) and then followed it up with a very upbeat one (The World Won't End/Gold).

Johnny Cash kicks arse. So does Willie Nelson.

Faithless Street is the way to go as far as Whiskeytown is concerned. It has "rough" demo versions of many of the tunes on Strangers Almanac that kick in terms of vitality.

The MAN is a legend. Recently got hold of American III and have been giving it a real pounding over the holiday period. Know of any artists that are similar to Cash?

There's only one Johnny Cash, mate.

Have heard several interesting versions of his songs... Rusty Cage, Folsom Prison Blues, Ring Of Fire, etc.

I wonder how Kamahl would go doing a Johnny, deep voice and all.

It was actually via the Beach Boys that I got interested in a few country acts from Nashville. In 96 they went to Nashville to record an album featuring country artists performing their favourite BB songs, with the guys doing harmonies and backing vocals. Works a treat. (Stars and Stripes Vol 1 :)) Anyways, I do very much like Sawyer Brown, Lorrie Morgan, Junior Brown and of course, James House. :D Hehehehehe.

As it turned out, I gave Ryan Adams a miss.

A friend of mine, who has a very good idea on what I think makes the difference between a good and bad live performance, saw him play in Sydney. She told me that his show was more rock than country and that Adams enjoyed.....ahem....flirting with the girls at the front of the stage. There was also the tiny matter of tickets costing $50 or so. Most reviews that I've read confirmed my friend's opinion, so I'm not too worried about missing it.
