Was watching an Oasis special the other day and the guy said that Oasis were great but no where near as good as the Bealtes. He said that still today the Beatles is the only band where most people can name all the members. He had a good point...

Everyone knows the 4 Bealtes names, well a bloody good percentage of people but i struggle with other huge bands..

U2 - Bono, Edge and ?? I dont even know Bono's and Edge's real names.

The Beach Boys - Brian Wilson, Carl Wison, Mike Love and there were some more Wilsons??

The Rolling Stones - Mick Jagger, Keith Richards....

Limp Bizkit - Fred Durst then who?

NIN - Trent Reznor and ??

Oasis - Noel and Liam Gallagher, Bonehead, Guigsy real names escape me though..

Garbage - Shirley Manson, what are the three dudes called..

Powderfinger - Bernard Fanning and ??

Metallica - Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield

REM - Michael Stipe and ??

I cant name any of the Chilli Peppers...

So a lot of big bands in todays world and of the past i cant name all of there members. I can name all of the members of course of my favourite bands like Jebs, Chair, etc but everybody seems to know John Paul George and Ringo.

Why? Prolly cos there music is simple the best..

Can't believe you can't name Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr.

Or Neil Finn, Nick Seymour and Paul Hester (admittedly that's not everyone who ever played for Crowded House).

But it is a good point all the same.

The point is valid.

I can name all the members of numerous bands (jod, Guigsy - Paul McGuigan, Bonehead - Paul Arthurs), as I'm sure many people can.

But the bands I know all the members of will differ from yours. I can tell you who is in Oasis, Stereophonics, Crowded House, whatever, but I'd have no idea on who the blokes are in Powderfinger, Radiohead, Limp Biskit, whoever.

The point is that I would imagine that almost everyone with a reasonable smattering of intelligence and awareness of popular culture could name all of the Beatles.

I don't think there's another group of musicians who can be put in that category.

That proves little. It means YOU can name them.

The point is (and it pains me to agree with Jod here) that most people, regardless of their affiliation with any particular genre, can name all four members of the Beatles. The bands you named above, I'd say nobody would know the members' names unless they were fans of the band.

I could easily rattle off 50 bands in similar fashion, but what does it prove? It proves only that I love their music and have read up on the bands' histories - but it doesn't mean anyone else has a clue who they are.

The Beatles, through their success, and partly through the fact that people have had 30+ years to learn and memorise four short names, have overcome the anonimity that many bands experience outside of their own fan base.

Beatles were more than a band anyway....they had their own movies as well etc....

Beatles are the biggest band ever.....end of argument, so of course everyone is going to know who they are.
Only people who wouldnt know who the beatles are would be monks in tibet who havent read a paper, listened to a radio or spoken to anyone in 40 years, or people that have been in a coma for 40 years.

the same amount of people also know who Elvis is....and Michael Jackson.

Jod: i dont think their music being the best has anything to do with popularity. I mean its not hard to know who the beatles are really....everyone knows who michael jackson is too....doesnt mean his music is the best either.

I think the main point is I own the entire Beatles collection, whereas I cannot think of a single Oasis tune I care for.

Unfortunately, like Lioness, I CAN ALSO name the Beach Boy line-up.

What about Led Zeppelin?

John Paul Jones
John "Bonzo" Bonham
Robert Plant
Jimmy Page

The JH Experience?

Jimmi Hendrix
Noel Redding
Mitch Mitchell

Mikes One Man Band?

Mike

My point about the spice girls was meant to be serious. Most people could name them.

They might never be acclaimed in quite the same way as the beatles but they sold a hell of a lot of records, and started a genre of bands. qualifications to be in an all-time top 50 groups that they were excluded from.
