He's hopeless. Puts no defensive pressure at all. Too weak to be a defender.

Who should we play instead of him? Livingston, saddington, teague, mgrath are far worse defenders

I don't beleive it. Thornton gets worse each week.
This thread is pointless. Apart from Whitnell he is our best defender at the moment. Can't afford to get rid of him until Bower and other future key backmen come in.

Has just lost all of his confidence. He still tries to do cute things like kicking around corners and dinky little left footers. When your confidence is down, which I believe his is, he should just concentrate punching, spoiling and trying to hit targets on his right foot.

Angry we lost, are you?

The problem is there is daylight between Whitnall and the rest of our defenders. Hopefully Bower and Hartlett can give us something to look forward to when they come back from injury.

Why don't you start 22 delist threads every week on top of another 6 sack the coach threads?

Hes entitled to his opinion. Ban people who want to ban people for expressing their opinions.
But yeah, how about making some suggestions rather than pointing out the bleeding obvious ShlomoGlickstein.

Why would you delist Thornton? In the game I watched today, he was the one trying to hold the defence together and he used the ball very well, as he has all season. The thing that stood out most of all in today's game was the lack of leadership. Of the long serving players, only Lappin and Whitnall could have held their heads up after today's game.

Certainly has not been our worst player this year.
Plus like every other week the oppositon on ballers have 0% pressure on them when they deliver the ball into their forward line.

Why would you delist Thorton? The biggest problem for him is that he played out of position.
Because of his size he is a BP or HBF but due to the obvious fact that the club is almost devoid of any defensive options he is asked to do a job that is physically not capable of and to his credit he battles and contests well against the odds most games.
I know everyone is entitled to their opinion but you have to wonder where some supporters get their ideas from.
Who do you really barrack for.You are a miserable winger who takes pleasure complaining about everything. Pleaser barrack for collingwood or essendon, they may need you.WE DONT

We'll trade and have money for a more experienced and tougher defender once Kouta and a few of the rabble are gone. Mal Michael would be alright, and might wanna move if the Bears go crap.

this could be the worst thread ever. thornton has been our best defender over the the past 3 years (except for whitnall when he's back there)

Isn't that exactly what you are doing?
anyway, Shlomo, T-Bird is a good defender-just is severely down on confidence. needs MUCH more support around him than bloody livingston. with whitnall down back he looks better, but yesterday he was played forward a lot.
Thornton, whilst not an excellent player, is very good. Until we can draft more key defenders, he is one of our only ones. Hopefully in a few more years, we will have drafted a big strong defender which will enable thornton to go to a position where he looks far more comfortablr, a half back flank.

Thornton was our best player against Essendon wasn't he?

Give me a break, Thorton is the only key defender we have. Most weeks he given the task of handling the opposition's key forward, who is normally far bigger than himself, and most weeks he does a reasonable job. Carlton should be rewarding Thornton for playing above his weight most weeks, certainly not delisting him. I shudder to think how many more goals we would concede each week if he wasn't playing.

I don't even agree that Thornton is low on confidence. The last month he's been racking up the stats and playing almost career best footy IMO.
I actually think our backline have been very good this year. They've really held their own against quality attacks, and with little defensive support from our midfield. Thornton isn't the reason why we're 2nd last.

The ball didn't leave our backline the last couple of weeks. Not his fault that our midfielders couldn't stop the continous supply to the opposition forwards, when its coming in that quick and that good, no one's gonna stop it.

Racking up the stats in the backline? That's some achievement!

Mal Michael? As good as a defender as hes been for the lions or whatever there called, his best years are behind him. Kouta will be with us till 2007 at least, Michael must be now pushing 30.
At best wed get 2 good years out of him, if we were to trade for a key defender theyd have to be under 25, having said that bower, edwards hartlett need an oppurtunity.
Yo Shlomo!
Do you ever have anything positive to say!!
Sure we've had a few lean years... but really it's only been 5 years since we've last been in finals... think of the joy the blues have given us for over 100 years... so for once lets support them when they're down.
And Shlomo... Mal Michael for thorton.... as my step-dad would say..
"Are you sick or what?"...
Thorton 22 (23 in November) .. great height.. great weight for a defender.... still young... give him another year or two and he'll be better for it... Mal Michael (turning 30 this year i believe)... Brisbane would want something big from him.. whereas Thorton not proven yet (but big potential) we'd get nothing for!
And Thorton has grown with some of our other youngsters and will make up a good core for future years.
GO BLUES!

That pretty much sums it up. Thornton really isn't big enough to be taking the key forwards but who else have we got? He isn't a bad player just he is not a real fullback. Of course he is going to be beaten a bit considering the amount of times our opposition get it inside 50.

Id give him a go up the ground a bit for a while, looks to have a decent engine . Hell put him on the ball see how he goes !! Got to try something why not experiment a little.
Least he might chase if his opponent gets the ball unlike Kouta, stevens and houla
