Pool D of interleague kicks off this weekend at Woori Yallock and Warburton. Here are the four leagues:
*Yarra Valley Mountain District FL
*Western Border FL
*North Central and Mallee FL (combined)
*Sunraysia FL
I hear Lance Picioane hasn't put his hand up for NCFL-Mallee. Can anybody second this?
I also heard organisers are still trying to pursuade Gary Moorcroft to play for YVMDFL. He wants to go skiing apparently.
Coaching staff will give Andrew Shipp (ex Dockers) every opportunity to recover from a foot injury in time to take the field for YVMDFL.
For thoughts on how Pool D will pan out, post `em here!

From the YVMDFL website - www.yvmdfl.com.au
Notice that both Shipp and Moorcroft have been picked in the final squads so am assuming they are both playing. My sources also informed me both will be participating as per league policy.
The YVMDFL squad looks pretty strong and the home grounds will certainly make them favorites but there will certainly be some tough opposition, especially the guys from Western Border FL.

WorkSafe Country Championships update
The YVMDFL competition takes a break next weekend, for Pool D of the WorkSafe Country championships. It is the first time the carnival format has been hosted in the Yarra Valley, and the weekend will see Senior and U18 football teams from the Western Border, North Central Mallee and Sunraysia leagues vying with the YVMDFL for promotion into Pool C for 2007. All leagues will play two (shortened) matches on the Saturday, and one on the Sunday, with Senior matches consisting of two 25 minute halves (plus time on) and the U18 games being flat 20 minute halves (no time on). Host venues were originally scheduled to be Woori Yallock and Yarra Junction, but the recent inclement weather has resulted in the Yarra Junction matches being switched to Warburton. The two squads have been in training for four weeks, and the League is confident of a positive showing. "The YVMDFL hasn't been far away in the last two carnivals" stated the League's Ben O'Brien "and the fact that the games are to be played in familiar surroundings for our teams should stand us in good stead. The selection of the first Alexandra player in our U18 squad, in Luke Heard, is worthy of particular mention, as the club is new to the competition this year. Hopefully, the weather will hold for the weekend, and local football followers can be treated to the best country football to be played in the YVMDFL." Captains for the YVMDFL will be Vin Dunstan (Seniors, Monbulk) and Carl Morandi (U18s, Healesville).

Western Border is going with an approach outside the norm, they have appointed Winis Imbi as playing coach of their squad.
Imbi appointed
...Portland's Winis Imbi to coach Western Border interleague team
5 May2006
Portland Observer
By SIMON BAMPFIELD
PORTLAND'S Winis Imbi has been appointed playing coach of the Western Border interleague side that will contest the VCFL Country Championships next month.
Imbi was ecstatic when given the responsibility to coach the WBFL.
"I am very happy, proud and honoured to lead the league and a bunch of great players," Imbi said.
He also paid tribute to outgoing coach Peter Sims, who has been the face of Western Border football for some time.
"I'm looking forward to the challenge, Simsy (Peter Sims) did a great job for the league so I don't want to let him or the league down."
Despite being announced yesterday Imbi already has some things he would like to implement into the team.
"I suppose there are a couple of things that I will try, especially with the players that we will have.
"Having said that in such a short period of time you can't fill the players heads with too many set plays or anything."
Once again the selectors have gone with youth, but the new coach will go in with a balanced side.
"I think you have to reward the blokes that have played interleague for a while, but also reward the young blokes that are coming through.
"All of the younger boys would look at the older ones and really want to play with them."
Imbi knows full well just how important the mix is, coming from a youngster in the interleague side to being a veteran and long time servant of the concept.
He is trying to encourage all players to throw their weight behind the WBFL.
"If everyone gets behind it, not focus on their own clubs too much, I think we can get the league back to where it belongs."
Imbi's stance is the same as the league itself, wanting to make sure the league lifts itself from the doldrums of division four.
"I don't know why we're down so low, I thought we had a really good side last year and I know we had a great coach."
The WB was relegated to division four for the 2006 campaign which will be played at Yarra Junction.
Selectors have chosen a squad of 40 players which will be cut down to 28 for the championships.
In a media release from the WB it noted the selectors focused on younger, fitter players capable of playing three games of fast attacking football over the two days, and/or players capable of making an immediate impact on a game.
The squad is:
Andrew Cameron, Baden Dodd, Dylan Kent, Tom McArlein (Casterton), Sam Clark, Ryan Larcombe, Josh Ransom (East Gambier), Lachlan Crawford, Dean Ercegovich, Joseph Kenna, Tony Pearson (Hamilton), Josh Dore, Grant Ewing, Brad Thomas, Rod Uebergang (Imperials), Ben Nash, Fred Saunders (Heywood), Steve Duldig, Clinton Viney (Millicent), Adam Creek, Liam Downes-Wooley, Scott Flett, Adam Kurzman, Wade Ryan, Garth Willoughby (North), Jarrod Holt, James Imbi, Winis Imbi, Clint Lancaster, Jaron Quinlivan, Luke Van Heugten (Portland), Jon Copping, Peter Harten, Brent Howard, Cameron Milich, Jason Rowe (South), Scott Fraser, Boyd Kenny, Mark Kruger, Brad Wilson (West).
One area that the selectors have made sure is covered is the ruck position with five starting ruckman named.
There will be changes to the squad in the coming weeks though.
"The squad can change and I will be getting in touch with coaches to see who is in form because you want to take players that are in good form."
That will leave the door open for players to miss out on first round selection.
The squad will start training next week at Island Park, but a time is yet to be announced.
The team will play Sunraysia at 12.30pm on Saturday June 3 and Yarra Valley Mountain Districts later that afternoon at 3.30pm.
The next day the league will take on Northern Central Mallee.

HOW will Western Border go Grimmett ??
You'd think the Mountain men would start favourites, but maybe Sunraysia will also be tough to beat.
Leading side in the North Central, Birchip-Watchem, apparently only scored ONE spot in the NCFL/Murray league combined outfit.

Only just saw this Jock. I could be a smartarse and look up the winning league and suggest that would have been my pick.
Realistically I would expect that the YVMDFL would hold a significant advantage as I believe their chosen venues might be smallish grounds that require knowledge in how best to play them.
I know the WBFL Commission is keen to lift their league out of the bottom pool. I'd have thought them or Sunraysia would be good chances to win the competition, perhaps even the winner of their game would go on to be the pool winner.
North Central and Mallee would struggle IMHO.

OK.
Took a look at the results and surprised by how strong Sunraysia turned out. Congrats to those boys who no doubt have a very big few days travelling a huge distance and securing the title.
Honestly thought WBFL would be a big chance as their executive is really annoyed at being in the bottom pool. They were in the semi finals of the old division one about five years ago and they don't like being considered a lesser major league. They put in significant time and resources this year to develop a competitive squad.

:) Former Wimmera League rep. player, now in the Bendigo League, sed on radio last nite the Big W boys had confirmed to him they had to change in a tent
Played all their Pool C games on the number 2 oval which did not have a pavilion
So complaints from the North Central-Mallee boys about sub-standard facilities in the Yarra Valley during the Pool D matches mite contain some validity
