View Full Version : More taxes increases in WA
Labour are really dishonest and parentless
Going to the polls on a no increase in tax and no new tax pledge they have lied thru their teeth. Latest two backdoor increases.
Probate fees. Up from $125 to $500. Not taxes, though, fees
Oh, and Western Power has to pay $20m to the government as a goodwill measure in the public interest. Not that we will end up with higher electricity bills to pay for it
I'll tell you what is bloody pissing me off about the Labour Govt. over here at the moment is their decision to build a bloody railway up the freeway. When I say this I must admit that a lot of bias comes into it (ie My dad just managed the construction of the Bus lane project which will be replaced by the railway) but there is also a few good reasons to be pissed off about it too:
1. More money will be spent on something that doesn't need to be done. They've just put a state of the art bus transit way up the freeway, why spend more money on something that isn't needed.
2. More noise pollution, nuff said.
3. Engineering wise, it is not possible and even if it is, it would be extremely costly. Reason? It is not possible to send trains over the Mt Henry and Narrows bridges. Two new bridges would have to be built for the trains.
4. Not enough room up the middle of the Freeway anyway.
Despite all this, the government is dead set keen on building the railway when the money could be spent on better things, ie fixing up the health system.
Back to the subject, I'm not overly surprised they're increasing the taxes. They couldn't get the "rich" tax (through public outcry) to work so they're looking for alternative avenues. I hate politics and politicians, I really do...

I think the probate increase is fair enough - it was last reviewed in 1990 and only applies to estates worth more than $100,000, so $500 or $125 doesn't make that much difference.
The second one is bollocks, of course.
I'm sick of pork-barrelling politicians anyway - how ludicrous is it to stand on a platform and promise no new/increased taxes when you don't have full access to Treasury actuals and predictions. Usually the other side (of whatever political persuasion) have left a bit of a mess as they've been primarily concerned with getting themselves re-elected for the last few months.
I understand that the WA Treasury is predicting a black hole in a few years time, budget-wise. So it's about time politicians stopped making stupid promises they can't keep.

As has already been posted , probate fees have not gone up for 10 years in WA; congratulations, you are now in line with the rest of the Nation (except NSW, costs twice as much here).
As for the Western Power money grab, correct me if I am wrong but did not tricky dicky court do the EXACT same thing 2 years ago; ie increase the dividend payable to the state govt...
My what selective memories some have...

Vis, Surely the bus project was the error. Dirty, stinky and slow with heaps more pollution than trains. The decision to route the mandurah-Perth railway up to Jandakot and then Northeast 30km to Kenwick then 20km Northwest to Perth adding over half an hour to the journey to Perth was ridiculous. Take going to an Eagles match from Attwell/Success or just going shopping in Perth. 15 minutes by car or 45 minutes by train, no competition.
The route would have been a loss making white elephant for WA.
You should go to Hong Kong and see the railway from city to airport over heaps of bridges and looking great, we can do as well
. Also consider this result of a survey from last year. 70% of car drivers who currently drive to Perth would consider using a train to get into Perth if fast and direct but only 15% of those would use a bus!!!! So the bus route virtually only helps those who already use them.
The bus route was and is an absolute joke IMO
Did you read my 3rd point? It will cost a fortune to build two new bridges for the trains and there is also not enough room for two trains either. The money could be better spent somewhere else.

It's obvious that the train should have been part of the original plan, we wouldn't be having these issues now, 20/20 hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Who was responsible for the original idea of having the train run via Kenwick? When I first heard about this, I thought it must have been a joke.
In hindsight yes, but to try and build it still anyway is just damn stupid!

I thought there was a train line up the middle of the Mitchell freeway already?
Been a while since I've been to Perth so my memory might be hazy...

North of the river there is but not south of the river.
I may be wrong here but it seems that the south of the river public transport system is terribly inadequate.
I live north of the river and to attend murdoch university I would have to either catch the circle rout bus that comes once in a blue moon or catch like 2 trains and 2 buses.
Why has it taken so long for the train line to be extended all the way along the freeway.
I really pity all those living south of the river its like an entirely different world down there.
Poor public transport
Poor beachs
Poor night life spots
Plus its a pain in hte ass to get to.
On the topic I have always wanted personal taxes to be abolished and in incrase in the GST.
But then again I am certainly no economist.

Seriously, ever heard of taking a bus and catching the ferry?

From Jandakot, 15 mins by car to Warnbro.....brilliant beaches and great cycle paths..20 mins to Mandurah....fishing, beaches etc.....10 mins to 'Sealanes'..best fish in the west.
Great golf courses......lots of night life in Freo....plus cappucino strip. Crap public transport but most use their cars.
I wouldn't move north of the river for all the tea in China
