Just wondering how many folks out there grew up on a steady diet of Metallica before developing a taste for dance music and techno etc etc in their late teens?

I've known a few guys who this has happened to and I want to know what the deal is???

This is quite bizzare. I have a mate who was a full on metal head right through high school. Metallica, AC/DC, Slayer, Napalm Death, Kreator were his fave bands. Now he is right into pill popping at all the big raves worldwide. Not sure if he stills digs the metal or not. Nice topic but can't explain the reasoning behind it. Maybe I will email him and get an answer.

A lot of people that like metal like electronic music too.

In my mid teens when i started to like music a lot i first got into electronic stuff like Prodigy, Chemical Brothers etc....then i got into the metal, then i got into the full on dance again.

Many people who like metal do like techno/dance music, because of the fast beats and the similarities in aggression with some styles.

Good luck to them, but I am not one of those people.

Grew up on Metallica and I have absolutely no interest in dance music.

Actually I pretty much have no interest in Metallica anymore either, but that's a story for another thread.;)

Still listening to the heavy stuff... 15 years later. And they said it was a phase - hah!:D

Hmmm, could this be related to the fact that chicks dig dance music and raves/nightclubs are a good way to meet them

God I was the other way. I was into Duran Duran, Human League and (wait for this) early Bananarama (any reputation I had has now been destroyed) in my early years at High School, but by the end of College the Rollins Band, Sonic Youth & some Metallica was my preferred choice in Music. I think this was because I started playing the guitar and a couple of other instruments during College and found smashing my guitar and banging my head against a brick wall more enjoyable than standing behing the keyboard doing very little.

Oh, I still like Cruel Summer, Robert DeNiro's Waiting and Shy Boy.

Hmmm, you could be onto something. Trust a guy to think that way.

I'm kind of the opposite....as a preteen I was into some of that late 80s pop-techno stuff. But at the same time I learned to play drums and realized most of that stuff was programmed, so I really turned on it quickly.

Once I got to high school I listened to a lot of progressive rock and classic hard rock. The grunge thing was happening then, but I never really jumped on that bandwagon - some of it wasn't bad, but a lot of it became so derivative after awhile.

If anything I would have guessed most people's tastes would have gotten a bit more "adult" as they grown up. I always associated techno with the teen scene, stereotypically.

I think it sucks personally, but I'm a self-admitted musical snob.

I moved straight from post-punk and new wave styles into techno and dance but at all times I also enjoyed heavy metal.

Grew up with older brothers listening to a solid diet of Led Zeppelin, Cream and Deep Purple and in turn I also enjoyed ACDC, Metallica and Judas Priest.

I like both styles of pop music and find myself these days moving effortlessly from Techno to Metal to Lounge to Jazz to Classical.

Maybe thats my problem - my tastes are so eclectic and all over the shop that I actually don't have a firm opinion on any style of music anymore ?

I think I am suffering from a terminal case of "Post-modernism"

cheers

Metallica will probably release a dance song soon anyway & complete the circle.

To you and me they may as well be my friend, but for the mainstream public they will have to wait and see.

I can imagine Lars getting into some NSync type samples & attempting some sort of new direction Metallica album...
