To be immune from Criticism and Angry Supporters.

Now i have been thinking for the past 3 hours, basically because of Ezbians post. I think of these fans who bought memberships, have bought em for years, this is Geelong's year, a great preseason, the team looks fit and fast, round 2 we are premiership favourites and we are top of the ladder after thumping 2 teams by 60+. This is our greatest chance since 92, 43 years of pain, this is our best chance. And here we go again, 6 losses in 7 weeks, it comes to a point where you start to think, why do i bother?? It's the same story every year, one person can only stand so much dissapointment, heartbreak, that empty feeling.

What is the main reason we go to football?? To watch our team play well, put in a real fight, never give up, and to do the basics right. Whether it be, a cyclone, freezing cold, a thunderstorm, or scorching hot, we'll be there. We want our boys to win. We spend our week preparing for the footy, if its friday we make sure we are home intime to get ready to watch out mighty catters, or Saturday, Sunday, we get up, we have our morning routine, and then we make sure we are at the ground, or near a radio/tv before the first bounce, whether it be afternoon or evening. This is when our sport, our passion, our loyalty, becomes a religion.

If i was an investing company i would not invest in a company because my dad invested in them and i grew up investing in them as a child, i did not invest in them because i knew/was related to someone who worked for them. I invest in them because i know i will make a profit because i study the company. This does not apply for football, you can't choose a team because they are on the up, you are usually born into this team, you have no choice, but that doesn't stop you from being a very passionate supporter. You have grown up to live around this team, you have watched this team as a child, you remember all the great players when you were young, these are some of your earliest memories. This is more than a game, this is more than entertainment, this Team is apart of you, the team made you who you are today.

If you see a bad movie, well it's not like you are supported this movie your whole life, it's just one 90 min made up by hollywood that cost you $15 all up. A movie is entertainment, Football is more than that.

When we buy our memberships, or fly interstate to watch Geelong, we go to see our team, our life, our religion, out there busting there guts trying to win. And it angers you when your team just doesn't try, don't they know what you have been through? Don't they know what you did to be here today? What gives them the right to just not try? We don't want money back from our football team, we just don't want to see them not try their hardest, give the 110%, do the 1%s, play as a team, support each other. We want a flag, and when the time is ripe, we want our team to win the flag, and share it with us. Thats our dividend.

I'm not sorry this is heavily football related, but i just wanted to sum up why we support our team, why it is the end of the world when we lose when we shouldn't, and why we have the right to be mad.

The world won't end, but the life of a Geelong fans certainly stops for a few days, weeks, months, years depending on the game. We will be back the next week/year to do it all over again, no matter how mad we are at our team, our boys, our religion.

Geelong doesn't make up all of our life, but it makes up a large part of our lives. It's why we are on this forum, isn't it?? It's why some of us sponsored Travis Varcoe isn't it??? It's why we spends our week planning around the Geelong game.

This is more than Entertainment, This is Football.

Top post, and I agree.

I see where ezbian is coming from, but footy is a sport that thrives on emotion, and this is why fans like us bleed whenever the team puts in a poor showing, or loses in a close one. Our hearts are doing the thinking and not our brains in that situation. It's the same all across the world, in all sports and codes, and not just for the average Aussie rules fan.

A football team for many is like an extended family. It's not easy to walk away and sometimes emotion will get the better of you and you'll say something you regret... but when push comes to shove, you love em and you'll forgive them almost anything... almost.

Good stuff, the GFC need to hear more of this and show some hurt themselves. Yet to really see any that makes me feel they really care!
