The Ching has become an important part of this board and I was thinking about the board awarding the winner with an actual medallion this year. Even if they don't care at all about it, it doesn't really matter. The biggest clubs in the world have fans player of the year awards.
Doesn't need to be too flash. Just throwing out the idea.

Good idea
Have no idea what the medallion could be though.

Good idea :) I'd definatly chip in to help pay for it :) Maybe we could suggest to the club that it be awarded on B&F night.

Can we have retrospective awards as well?
Im sure I have posted this before but on the OzSpurs (soccer thing) we have an award and the club organised for us to award it to the player before one of the games.

Has West won all of them?
Great idea Rocco.
Anyone got any ideas about what we could use?

My wife gets things cast in silver to make into jewellery, it is relatively cheap around $50-$70. If we could find something suitable we could get it cast and make that the medal/award. They keep the mould in case you want more made up and it is cheaper once the mould has been made.

It should have a pic of William 'Ching' Harris on it.

http://www.fullpointsfooty.net/h.htm#William%20Harris%20(Footscray)
The redoubtable William 'Ching' Harris was one of the greatest defenders of his time, and gave Footscray service of the highest order for almost twenty years. Always impeccably turned out, Harris was a great favourite among the Tricolours' female supporters, with his Chinese moustache and fringe conveying just the right intimation of exotic intrigue, besides giving rise to the 'Ching' nickname.
Harris made his VFA debut with Footscray in 1896, the last season before the VFL schism. The following year he was joined on the last line of defence by the equally talented 'Paddy' Hinch, and over the course of the next dozen years the pair developed an acute mutual understanding, providing the Tricolours with the best defensive partnership in the Association in the process. The familiar sight of 'Ching' Harris careering out of the backlines while Hinch dropped back to provide cover was one of which the Footscray supporters never tired; neither did they mind it when Harris, as was his wont, elected to 'mix it' with the opposition - football, after all, was a man's game. Nevertheless, Harris sometimes took his liking for a stoush too far, and on one occasion in 1903 he ended up in court charged with assaulting a Richmond opponent. Two years later he was rubbed out for the entire season after repeatedly falling foul of the umpires.
Somewhat ironically, given the often acrimonious nature of his dealings with officialdom, William Harris maintained his involvement in football after the Great War by serving as a VFL goal umpire.
Thanks for that Fossie - never knew his history.
What a backman!

Hey monkster another idea if it isnt presented on the bnf night to have someone present the award on the end of year family day or even the bulldogs chritmas footy show which is held at the end of the year .This was actually brought up near the end of last year.
I vote to rename the award.
I propose as follows:
2006 and retrospective awards named : Bigfooty Bulldogs Best and Fairest
Post Scott West's retirement: The Scott West Award
This would a) not reflect a criminal and b) give some sort of kudos to the guy that was swept this award in the past and will probably do so again this year.
This would a) not reflect a criminal
After bashing a Tigers player, Ching was merely misunderstood by the Court.
Or are you talking about some record of Ernie Sigley we don't know about?
The "Ching" is a tradition here, and the former name of a dubious poster known to frequent the Courthouse Hotel.
I think it would be somewhat remiss of us not to name it after Scott West

They left out the most important bit - and the reason we call our award 'The Ching' - Ching Harris (along with Vic Samson) was a 5 time premiership player.
Of course, anyone who belts up a Richmond opponent to the extent that they land in court, would have a perfectly exceptable reason to name an award after them on it's own.
I think it makes less sense to name this award after someone that none of here have ever seen play, now that we want to make it somewhat official.
Sure i've never seen Norm Smith, Charles Brownlow or Michael Tuck (that last one's a joke) but they are medals that are long exsisting and would have been named by people that had seem them play.
We have a chance to name a medal after someone we have all seen play, rather than someone we randomly picked from our copies of Unleashed.
Thanks for that info Fossie. Quite the hard nut. Harris, backman mmmmm. I like the idea of an official 'Ching' Award.
