I nearly choked on my beer when i was reading in last weekend's footy record that Freo will be holding a testimonial for that big ol stalwart of theirs, Shaun Mcmanus ... (hosted by that irritating cousin of his, Rove)
Um last time I checked, Testimonials were resereved for champion players nearing the end. Since when has McManus been considered in that class.
McManus would just about have to be in my top ten worst players I've ever seen (who have played over 100 games)
Seriously, you may as well hold testimonials for Aaron Henneman, Ian Prendergast and Jason Cloke.
I guess Freo have to clutch at straws, considering they have produced so few 'champions' in their history.
IF they can hold a testimonial for a player with so little talent and class as McManus, then that club has serious problems.

I don't see whats wrong with rewarding a player for dedicated service to the club. Perhaps the AFL can pay for Carlton to throw one for Kouta.

Nothing wrong with it. Just like nothing wrong with Shane Woewodin doing a lap of honour on Monday. Just awkward.

Cheap shot, McManus has been there since 95 and withstood 2 knee reconstructions, he's been a great servant and no doubt would have had more impact if not for his knee, thing is he's still playing decent football. The only thing I agree with you on is Rove, he's a :D:D:D:Dhead
Deserves one more then Anthony "1 million for sitting on my ass" Koutafides, hell McManus wud be in ur top 3 in the best and fairest if he played for ur lot.
A team who classified Ryan Houlihan as one of their starting midfielders shud not be making fun of any player

Celtic pride you last 11 years in the AFL system and play 200 games.
He may not be the most skilled guy out there but he has a big big heart.
Cheap Shot. Pal.
Has been a very loyal player and a Club leader. Sure he may not be a champion but that in no way diminishes his standing at the Club.
Most opposition supporters, even if they only had a slight understand of the concept of sportsmanship, would refrain from a post that is such trash.:thumbsd:

By the looks of things, that has happened a few times. ;)
I don't think there's much wrong with it. He played through the difficult times, and what he lacks in skill he makes up for in heart. An honest workhorse who will always be popular with the fans.
he has a hot wife. I mean very hot.
How the **** do ugly people end up with such beautiful sposes.
---> Its not as if shes with him because of his football talent.
He mightn't be the most skillful player going around, but you can't question his heart and commitment. He's built a career on the back of it.

What a shocking thread. :thumbsd:
McManus has been at Freo since the beginning, undergone two? knee reconstructions and has been a club captain and played 200 games.
If you actually watch this bloke there are few in the AFL who go in harder at the ball and give everything they can give
A true clubman and very deserving of a testimonial IMO. :thumbsu:

I'd give one to Peter Bell ahead of McManus (or has he had one already?)
Paid up for me and the missus to attend Maccas Testimonial. Would not miss it for quids. Happily pay the dosh to celebrate the career of a true footballer. I expect the Burswood to be coloured in Purple on the 18th of June. I also hope a Testimonial is in the wind for Shane Parker in the not too distant future.:thumbsu:
To dmc333, wazzabp, Keithy, Milkman, FU, Monocle and Pat. We at Freo appreciate the support. Thanks.
No one has ever declared Macca a champion footballer or one that is highly skilled. However, no one has worked harder (esp after two knee recos) and I don't think I've seen anyone at Freo put their body on the line and take serious hits as much as Shaun.
Even this pre-season, he worked as hard as anyone to improve his skills.
All clubs need their battlers. Freo probably more than most.

Testimonials are given to crowd favourites, blokes who have put in the hard yards or ones that have fallen on hard times and champions. Obviously the thread starter has absolutely no idea on the concept of blokes who are heart and souls of clubs.

Every Club is entitled to list one player with 10 or more year club service as a 'testimonal' player when it is known they are playing their last year. Part of the bonus of that is a section of their salary is not counted under the salary cap. To be eligible for that they must do certain things/events to show it is a real testimonial year and advise the AFL what they are. Sometimes clubs hold testimonial dinners, other times the player is the special guest at a regular luncheon or dinner or the likes.

McManus is certainly no legend, but the fact remains has more 'pride' than celtic_pride could ever dream of.

McManus is a guy I have always respected even when the dockers were really bad. Gives 100% and lays his life down for the team. Very good club man and is unlike many Dockers players at the moment he has ticker

I might be wrong but isn't McManus like the nephew of Gerard Neesham and thats the only reason he ever got to even play AFL? A guy that can't kick and can't do much else any good would never have gotten drafted to any other club.
A testimonial is great though for such a wonderful talent. Just like clapping your team off after losing a final by 10 goals.

MacmAnus, I mean Shuan, tries his guts out every week. I often refer to him as the Eric Watterson (Perth Wildcats in early 90's) of AFL. He doesn't have a lot of talent, but he tries his guts out more than anyone I've ever seen and deserves to be recognised.
Disgusting thread, and gutless. For any player to come back from two knee recons, captain a club and stay loyal and enthuisiastic through our history is amazing and deserves a testimonial.
He is still putting his body on the line this year. He turned his career around since last year and is currently a walk up start.
Look at his form this year, he's been very good. He's averaging over 20 posessions, and nearly 4 tackles a game. Very few clangers which has surprised the biggest McManus fans.

Shaun is freo thru and thru he is from the one of the great Fremantle sporting families- Neesham/Regan/Miller Clan.
Lets face it. He only ever got a game in the AFL because his Uncle was the coach. He would never have even been given a game in the AFL with any other club and would have rotted away in the WAFL. How many other more deserving players out there don't get given the same chance and are twice as good a player?

Before he done his knee twice he was seen as the enxt Chris Mainwaring. He would have been a 200 plus game player without doubt if he didnt do his knee.

Lets face it, all clubs need their triers and scraggers that have a red hot go. As a Bullie supporter you should know that better than most. No one ever rated Libba, Dougie Hawkins or Scott West as players with great skills. Just honest triers that would give all for for their club.

I assume you saw mcmanus playing for east freo as an 18 year old in 1994? He blew the comp away that year and i guarantee he would have been picked up by another afl club. His stats in his first few seasons before his knee recos were impressive, keep in mind he was only about 19-20 at the time.

Highlight of his career was the final they didn't win?
Proabably when he got off the ground after being sh1tmixed in a derby put his teeth back in and stopped his brain rattling and slotted the goal on the way to the win...
Typical of him...all guts and just occasional glory
Well Celtic Pride, I think Shaun has a greater claim to that title than you. I saw Shaun play as an 18 yr old for East Fremantle the year before the Dockers were formed and he was really something, so much potential. As has been said 2 knee re co's have played havoc with his career, but he really is the heart and soul of Freo. His genuine Irish Celtic Pride heritage family are legends of the Fremantle area. They include the McManus, Neesham, Sheehy, Miller and Regan families. I was told Daniel Kerr's mother was a Regan before marriage also. The families have produced champions in football, water polo, netball and horse racing (jockey and trainer JJ Miller). There the sports I knows of.
Testamonials are given for the acknowledgement and contribution to a Club or Organisation and no one can deny Shaun has contributed to the Club.

Proably close to the worst disposal in the afl but a player with plenty of guts and a club stalwart.
might not have had the same amount of opportunites at a more successful club but always tried his heart out.
always hated when he played against us because of his never say die attitude.
is this his last season?

I think it's now safet to say that celtic_pride is in fact Clive Waterhouse.
I think you'll find Shaun McManus and Gerard Neesham are second cousins. As are McManus and Daniel Kerr. As already pointed out Mcmanus was a star at under age level and would have gone top ten in the draft. Infact he was either leading the brownlow or close to it the year he did his first knee.
As for the testimonial, yeah why not?

Well at least the highlights reel will be brief:eek:
Seriously though, half his luck. He's played 200 more games than me and anyone else on here, so for a club trying to build a tradition, paying tribute to a loyal and long-serving player seems appropriate. Maybe holding it at the end of the year might be better, as the club should be focusing on trying to make the finals rather than celebrate the persistence (in contrast to excellence) of a current player.
He's likely to get 20 possessions against the Dogs on Sunday, so I won't rag him too much...

Seriously now...........I posted this earlier in the thread - but maybe didn't make it clear........
And AFL Players 'testimonial' is NOT what we normally consider to be a testimonial dinner/luncheon/whatever coming towards the end of a great career.
Every club has the right to list a player that has given 10+ years service to the Club as a testimonial player when it is known/confirmed as their last year of service - the names of these players have to be lodged with the AFL by the end of March (I think).
What is an AFL testimonial player? A player who they can lob $100k of their salary outside the salary cap (on top of veterans) because it is definately their last year. BUT to get that benefit they have to also lodge a list of 'events' such as a testimonial dinner, that they are going to undertake to prove it is a real testimonial player.
There are politics and total player payments issues involved in all this, it's not as simple as saying 'he is a legend, he'll retire one day soon, let's honour him', it doesn't work that way in the AFL I'm afraid. You (the club) get financial benefit/relief for honouring a long time servant of your club regardless of his onfield achievements.
So it's no use bitching about whether he deserves it or not, odds on he is getting it under the above regulations regardless.
