Hypothetically if the socceroos won the world cup or even came close i.e. made the 16 what effect do you think that would have on the AFL and sport in general ? I doubt it would make a dent in the popularity of aussie rules . Everyone has their douubts about the socceroos especially the German's but hey anything's possible
A lot of people would be pi$$ed for a week and sticking it up supporters of other countries who have s******ed at Oz Soccer.
IMO in the long run I don't think the other football codes will have much to worry about from a supporters point of view as the love and fanatisism we have for our game (AFL) and club is ingrained in us for generatoins. Tho there will be those mums and dads who will jump on the bandwagon and be taking their small fry off to soccer clinics, clubs etc. Also, Oz soccer has come across in the past as having iffy administration and i'm sure people would feel a bit nervous of any long term commitments. It would be good for Oz Soccer as hopefully they would score some high profile sponsors with plenty of cash and the home grown talent would stay in the country instead of going overseas to make a decent living. I'm not that up on who's who in the Oz team but how many of them are Australian based?
I know it's a fantasy but hey you never know. Little Johnny should declare it a PUBLIC HOLIDAY if we win.
might have a short term effect in terms of interest and publicity and no doubt will improve exposure and awareness in the long term
but in terms of passion and love for the game, footy can never be beat......i think we footy followers love the fact that our game is unique to this country
watched aus vs holland earlier in the week and while the game was enjoyable it is somewhat of a novelty at this point in time and could never match the afl for excitement on a week to week basis
wat r the odds on the socceroos making the final 16?

They may make the round of 16 (hope so, coz i'll be there), but it will maybe give people a passing interest in soccer rather than none at all, and give everyone a reason to get blind.
AFL has nothing to worry about, even Frank Lowy (the head of FFA) has admitted that, he obviously knows that AFL fans are passionate, and if anything they can follow more than one code at once (such as myself)
The admin in Oz has been tidied up, the comp has been tidied up ...
Soccer is a global behemoth and is on its way to Oz in a big way.
Already in the A-League 1st season its TV ratings have matched Super 14 rugby union..... this will be just the start for soccer...
Soccer has something kids can aspire to that australian rules football doesn't... the chance to play for your country. The marketing value of this is priceless.
Soccer in Oz isn't what it was just a few years ago.. it is now ready to put up a fight.

Soccer will be hot for the time leading up to the world cup and a little while after, but once reality hits home, it will be forgotten again.
Very boring sport.

I think soccer will be popular enough to sustain itself so long as its played in the AFL off season. I don't expect soccer go down the drain in Australia but then again it will never top AFL. For me soccer is something to do when the cricket/super14/NRL/AFL is not on the air

I think you would be suprised how popular soccer is
Although I have no figures to back me up I think with the number of youngins playing the game (most popular in australia) they are more likely to have a long term interest in the sport and now that we have a much easier road to the world cup there is no doubt soccer's popularity will continue to grow

Yeah I'm pretty sure that Soccer is the most played game at a junior level in Oz and the US and has been for some time so the transformation has not happened. At a junior level Mums and Dads don't want their kids playing contact sports but as they get older it's a different story. Definitely in the playground and in comps we used to play Soccer at primary school then in High School I think we played it twice in 6 years. But I do agree with the qualification route, best thing to get into Asia, we will get to see the Socceroos a lot more rather than trying to follow individual players splattered all over Europe.
What they need to do is get a TV deal that enhances the sport, not for money. When NRL and Basketball were on ABC Sunday mornings I got exposure to both those sports on a regular basis, when they moved to TEN and Nine I lost all contact. Now I live in Melbourne and have a chance to go and see the Storm or Tigers, Giants, I have no desire to.
AFL will be strong for a long time to come though.

junior participation is huge in soccer
the main reason is that more kids get to see more of the ball
the ground is much smaller then AFL, often in junior footy you see kids up one end of the ground bored as they dont get involved at all
soccer this doesn't happen as much
soccer is a boring game to watch, but much more appealing game to play for youngsters
Already in the A-League 1st season its TV ratings have matched Super 14 rugby union..... this will be just the start for soccer...
OMG. Did you say Super 14 Rugby Union! Because that is like the biggest, most popular sport in Australia! ;)
Soccer may become popular but most of it will be like during the World Cup and has been since we qualified. Believe me once we get smashed by some decent teams in the World Cup all the hysteria will die down and AFL will sit in it's rightful spot as #1 Sport in Australia.

Hopefully it doesn't happen. Like our ego isn't big enough as it is when it comes to sports. The way we celebrated for qualifying the stupid thing was as if we won it.
And no, it wouldn't touch the superior AFL.

Can't see how people think you can only like one of the two sports.
I'm going to be into the WC in a big way in the next month, doesn't mean I"ll forget all about Collingwood. As a matter of fact, I'm pumped about next monday, then i'm heading up to Sydney two weeks later...

i dont understand why the non soccer fans cant put thier hatred aside and get behind the socceroos because they are representing our great nation on the biggest sporting event in the world

Sure fans will still follow AFL but the problem may arise in the future as more young kids than ever before are taking up soccer these days and we may get to a stage where there wont be enough players good enough to play AFL they may take up other sports like soccer
If the Socceroos won the world cup....
Im going on a drinking binge for a week :D

i dont hate soccer, i just dont care much for it. i'll watch it if nothing else is on, and it has to be the top teams playing (not the a-league). it would be nice if the socceroos got to the 16, hell i'll probably even watch some of the games, but im merely riding the bandwagon. afl is still number 1
