rocket commented on bendigo radio Wed nite that the mix-up with streetie and skip would have taken up no more than between 5 to 8 seconds
he sed the 2 players were on opposite ends of the interchange gates and right at the limit of each end so they were a fair way apart
pretty savage fine for such a short period of time

Nah its a fair enough penalty I reckon, it just should not happen in this day and age, with all the technology and officials monitoring it.
We got off quite lightly really, considering what could have happened if the Hawthorn captain asked for a head count.

Under what rule were we fined?
Is this a standard procedure or are the AFL just making it up as they go along?
Did the AFL employed interchange steward get fined, or was he fired? Or is he as "accountable" as the AFL employed time keepers at Aurora?
Very excessive penalty. Should have been a suspended fine.
I want to see every club who allowes a player on the ground, for any length of time, fined.

What did the steward do wrong?
How is the Interchange Steward at fault.
What did you want him to do, go and tackle Street and stop him going on the ground.
Street would have been standing on the boundary line waiting to go on, just like every other interchange.
When he went on to early, the interchange steward notified the bulldogs straight away.
I'll ask again, what else did you want him to do

I don't really see why a fine is involved at all. Is there a specific rule or is this just the AFLs way of saying, we can't let you get away with that? There is a rule to cover this situation but the Hawthorn captain and umpires weren't alert to it.
Look at it this way? Suppose a full forward—let's call him Matthew—takes a dive and gets a free kick seconds before the final siren. Matthew goals from the free kick and his side wins an important match by a couple of points. Replays clearly show that there was no contact. The AFL can't reverse the decision or change the result. They can't fine the winning team to save face. So why do they get a second shot at it in this case?

Not being proactive, and ensuring that Street didn't run onto the ground until Skipper was off the field of play. Likely he was sitting on his arse when Streeter ran on and only realised too late that Skip had not yet come off. Even in this era of heavy rotations, the interchange steward's role is hardly the most taxing of jobs.
The AFL is a profesional organisation, so issues like this should really never happen. In soccer, you don't see players run on until the substituted player is off the field of play. Pretty elementary stuff I would have thought.
For the Dogs to have to take the full responsibility for this mistake is wrong IMO. The interchange steward clearly wasn't doing his job properly: if he was, the mistake would have been averted.
Anyway, it is a heavy-handed and draconian penalty by the AFL over what constituted an 8 second error of no consequence to the game. Ridiculous really.

It doesn't happen in soccer because the 4th official is standing next to the player and controlling the situation.
If you want the interchange steward to do that, that's fine, but blame the AFL for not instructing them to do that, don't blame the steward.

It doesn't happen in soccer because the entire game stops, there's no need to rush onto the field because no one's going to pass it to you anyway.

IMO the interchange steward's role should be exactly that: to control and monitor all interchanges made during the course of a match (and to make sure they all take place within the interchange gate area). If the AFL brief to interchange stewards is to just sit on their arse and write down a few notes about who came on and off, why exactly do we even have them.
