Is there an Essendon player that is worthy of the great No. 5? Or will we sit on it for awhile? i think that we should sit for while. Used to think McPhee should get it after Hird but not as keen for that to happen anymore. Wait for the obvious to emerge. Also wouldn't give it to a new draftee. Let them make their own number.

They should retire it.
That wont happen
Our new number one draft pick...it'll give him incentive to stick around should we continue to endure lean times beyond this season

Nah i disagree. i don't think a kid who has never played a game will be worthy of the greatest jumper in the last 20 years from TD to Hirdy
I reckon Hirdy will play on next year anyway, my gut feeling
If we do get a Bryce Gibbs hypothetically, he can have a highish number to start, if he does turn out to be the gun he's supossed to be, he can have it I don't mind. Was Hirdy deserving of TD's numberat the time?

In 2008 I would give the #5 to 1 of the young guys who plays on the ball. maybe Monfries or even Stanton ? maybe Stanton. What # has Jobe Watson got ? #32 hopefully :thumbsu:

Watson had number 4 because he wanted to create his own number and not be shadowed by his dad. Stanton has Misiti's number. Monfries has Wellman's so that might be a possibility as Monfries is more similiar to Hird then Wellman. However, I would like to see the younger players make a number their own not play in someone elses.

I remember a lot of Essendon supporters at the time complained that they gave the great Terry Daniher's number to that Hird kid.
I reckon we just give it to our first draft pick the year Hird retires. The longer we leave it vacant, the more pressure there will be on the bloke who wears it.
Alternatively, we could leave the jumper until after Lloydy retires and make it the on-going number of our captain. The skipper of 3 of our last 4 flags has worn number 5. I say post Lloydy, because I can't imagine him giving up 18.

Agreed. I think give Gibbs a high number..... and in a year or two after he's proven himself give him the #5. If we get him, he will be a star... no doubt. Wont be Hird, but a star none the less.

lol..... yes, I probably should have read the whole thread before posting hey! :p :o

.....the man makes a good point here! :thumbsu:
Instead of saying Bryce Gibbs maybe we should be saying 1st round draft pick as I haven't given up EFC ending up with the spoon, and maybe we should say 2007 1st round draft pick as we should all hope Hirdy plays one more year

Hird didn`t get No.5 straight away. He had 49 for at least one season

Haha I dont know. 2 premierships, 1 as captain, Brownlow, Gazillion ANZAC Day medals, All Australian... 3rd best player for essendon ever... maybe??? ;)

He wore 49 in 1992 and in the 1993 Foster's Cup series. Wore 5 for the rest of 1993.

Well, exactly, so the right thing to do is let it rest for one year.

TD finished in 1992. So they didn't let the number rest for a year after him.
They let it rest for the pre-season series. But Mercuri (45), Misiti (52) and Hird (49) all wore different numbers in that night series.

I think (hope!) Hird will play on for one more year. I would definitly pass the Number 5 on immediatly for the exact reason Longy stated.
Sheeds seems to like to pass the jumper numbers onto similar types of players. So in 08 I think Sheeds (assuming he is still coach) will give it to a key position type player. If we don't get Gibbs this draft and we were to say get a key position type like Hansen or Gumbledon then maybe one of them will get it.
I remember when 5 was given to Hird a lot of people thought he would never compare to the great TD
The new player will make the number their own. People tend to care about numbers more in regards to recent players. When was the last time someone commented about McVeigh wearing the Great John Coleman's number 10?

10, 5, & 3 are probably the most revered numbers at Essendon, closely followed by 7.
You cant leave a number retired, but it does make me blead to see a number (take 3 for example) given to a kid who just doesn't make it. He then keeps the number for years.
Imagine if we gave 5 (whenever that happens) to a guy like McAllister or Henneman!
The way the club is travelling on feild at the moment, I can't see anybody wearing any of the following numbers next year:
3
5
7
Leave them alone, and change the number through the season if worthy, or at least leave them until after the pre-season comp.
Anouncing numbers before a shot has been fired in anger is too subjective and will only end in tears.
10 being given to McVeigh looked a mistake early on given the history of that number just prior to him. Following O'Donnell & Foulds was always going to be tough, even without the memory of the great JC.
But at the end of the day, it probably doesn't matter that much at all. Giving the number to a dud for 2 years means the next guy to wear it has less pressure (3, 4 etc)

Hird will play next yr, but after 2007 retire the jumper b/c no one will ever give even half of the joy and memories of this current day legend, we may never in our lifetime see anything close to what we have witnessed over the last 14/15 yrs
Bryce Gibbs should be given 3 if we get pick 1, to follow the likes of Judd and Deledio
Henneman cant be there next yr again could he?
