I am trying to convince my brother that the old Simpsons (seasons 2-9ish) are better than the new simpsons (seasons 10ish-). He insisted for me to put up a poll.
... how old is your brother?
Any hardcore Simpsons fan will tell you that 2-9 were the golden years.
Was gonna ask when new simpson begins, but clearly from about season 2 or 3 until about season 8 or 9 were far far better than anything since.
I think probably all the episodes after the 200th can't top some of the ones from the golden era with episodes such as Homer Badman, Cape Fear and pretty much any from that period involving Lionel Hutz.

Season 11 was the start of the show's downward spiral.
11 only had, like, two good episodes - the one where Bart is diagnosed with ADD, and the one where Burns leaves his house to Homer while he gets treatment for his various diseases.
But all the others sucked.

I like it all, but I do prefer the 'old' Simpsons.
Saying New Simpsons is better then old is like saying Star Wars ep. 1 - The phantom menace is better then 'Empire Strikes Back' - you have be either 10 years old or suffering a mental illness to hold the view.

Has there ever been such a one-sided poll on Bigfooty ?
So far it's 17-0 in favour of 'Old Simpsons'.
make that 18-0 to old simpsons:cool:

Yeah.
There were some howlers in Season 9/10, but some good ones too.
Season 11 was when it started becoming consistently crap/weird.

The newer episodes are more directed to youth, I feel, while the older, and yes, better, episodes were directed more towards teenagers and adults. I can remember my Grade 2 teacher, or sometime around then, telling us all that the Simpsons weren't for kids. This was maybe around 1992-93.
Nowadays, it's just another cartoon for the kiddies.

The last part is correct, but I disagree with the first bit. The true genius of the early seasons is they were directed at adults, teenagers AND kids. Jokes in there that all would get, but ones that only adults would get on more then one level. Post season 9 or 10, it's a real struggle to think of an episode that is funny beyond the physical humour level.

From series 1-9 the Simpsons was just the greatest show; just about every episode was a classic that you could watch over and over again. There were some good episodes in series 10, a few ones that are worth watching. However from then on I can’t believe how bad it has become. It’s pretty disappointing to see a show go so downhill, it’s just nothing like it used to be. They try so hard to be funny and instead they look pathetic, they should have quit many, many years ago.

Yeah, it seems like that, but then again, they are a dumber generation who probably think that the 6pm episodes are 'new'. I dunno, but yeah.
And yes, he has seen the poll, and therefore the 'i told you so'. Funnily enough, the 2 votes for old simpsons were 1) By Cassius, just to break the streak, and 2) The wrong one was clicked...so very convincing.

The results of this poll speaks for itself.
Early episodes: Character-driven stories, realism, biting satire, mastery of subtle humour.
Later episodes: Slapstick, fart jokes, excessive musical numbers, excessive self-referencing, guest stars for the sake of guest stars, continuity thrown out, characters more and more one-dimensional. Singing jockey trolls, Homer has 8,000 jobs, Lisa becomes unlikeable feminazi, almost no Mr Burns episodes, stories about secondary and tertiary characters that don't have any depth.
But the worst trait of all: the subtlety has completely vanished. It's like every cliched Hollywood sitcom now where you get hit on the head with every joke. Surprised there's no laugh track.
Things have improved slightly since the unwatchable Mike Scully era, but it's not even close to the level seasons 2-7 were at. He's apparently writing the movie, by the way, so don't expect much.
I'd rather watch a season 3 episode I've seen 100 times over a season 11 episode I've seen once.

Don't know what season it was but i remember watching the episode when Ned's house gets destroyed by a cyclone and thinking to myself 'it's over.'
It's like a sitcom now and has lost all its previous charm, and the writing just isn't clever anymore. I also hate how they use 'jokes' like Maggie folding her arms and looking annoyed, how the hell is that funny!?
I'll always be a die-hard simpsons fan because its the show i grew up with and the one that will define my generation. It's just a shame that it went on a bit too long and tarnished its great name.

New lowest form of humour = Drug Humour.
Only Cheech and Chong and Half Baked ever made me laugh with that crap. And I hate how they keep rehashing thier old jokes like when Homer does something and something bad happens and he does it again expecting something different to happen. Yeah, cause doing it every week won't make it old. :thumbsd:

Haha! :p I agree, it's a classic.
Homer: Ned Flanders, I mock your value system. You also appear foolish in the eyes of others. :D
Homer: Yello? ... Yes? ... Mental hospital? ... Well I don't know any Ned Flanders.
Marge: The man who lived next door until his house blew down?
Homer: Oh, him!
And more to that conversation when Ned is losing it:
Ned: (to Lenny) And as for you, I don't know you but I'm sure you're a jerk!
Lenny: Hey, I've only been here a few minutes! What's going on?
Ned: (to Moe) You ugly, hate-filled man!
Moe: Hey, hey, I may be ugly and hate-filled, but I... um, what was the third thing you said?
Marge: Ned! We meant well, and everyone here tried their best.
Ned: Well my family and I can't live in good intentions, Marge! Oh, your family's out of control, but we can't blame you, because you have good intentions!
Bart: Hey! Back off, man!
Ned: Ooh okay, dude! I wouldn't want you to have a cow, man! Here's a catch-phrase you better learn for your adult years: "Hey, Buddy, got a quarter?"
Bart: I am shocked and appalled.
:D
Actually its a ripper episode, so many great quotes, good storyline with neddy losing his house and the plot. Loved the flashbacks to his childhood. The reaction to the Hurricane. Very funny episode.
Homer: Oh Lisa! There's no record of a hurricane ever hitting
Springfield.
Lisa: Yes, but the records only go back to 1978 when the Hall of
Records was mysteriously blown away.
Kent: ...and the weather service has warned us to brace ourselves for
the onslaught of Hurricane Barbara. And if you think naming a
destructive storm after a woman is sexist, you obviously have
never seen the gals grabbing for items at a clearance sale.
Lisa: Mom, let's just grab what we can and get out of here! This
storm is making people crazy.
[two old hands feel around Lisa's spikey hair]
Mrs. Glick: The last pineapple! And plenty ripe, too!
[picks up Lisa and puts her in a cart]
Lisa: But I'm not fruit! I'm a kid!
Mrs. Glick: That's what the pumpkin said.
Ralph: Hi, Lisa. We're going to be in a pie!
Homer: I engaged in intercourse with your spouse or significant other.
Now that's psychiatry!
Ned: [omnious] And if you really tick me off, I'm gonna run you down
with my car.

Yeh I know, as I look through the quotes it's better than I realised. :p
Dr. Foster: (on phone) Yes, Dr. Foster here. … Ned Flanders? You're sure? … No, no, no, I'll come right over. And may God have mercy on us all. (hangs up) Darling, there's an emergency at the hospital, uh, where are my shoes?
Mrs. Foster: I think they're in the den.
Dr. Foster: The den? May God have mercy on us all.

I don't think I laughed once. Perhaps a smile when Willy smashed the 'Home Sweet Home' thing...the last joke of the episode.
Just really lame.
The Homer pants subplot was completely pointless, and had no real story to it anyway and what is it with the totally unrelated starts to an episode? 'Bombardment'? That was just crap to lead into a weak 'My Fair Lady' spoof.

What season are we up to now? The last 2 have been awful while the ones before that were ok but not really close to the classic era.
what is it with the totally unrelated starts to an episode?
I agree that the new episodes suck but alot of the classic episodes start out with a totally unrelated lead in story. It's more the lack of a second story and the sloppily thrown together stories. I think since their heyday the Simpsons have lost 5 minutes of episode time due to commercials getting longer, this means that they can't cut out material that's important to the story so the unrelated random jokes get cut out.
What season are we up to now? The last 2 have been awful while the ones before that were ok but not really close to the classic era.

Now if you ask anyone, the four seasons of that show were far funnier then the recent seasons.
Oh and in regards to another query in this thread, Season 8 on DVD will be released locally in Australia on September 27. I'm really looking foward to this one as it has one of my fave episodes ever - The Springfield files, with apperances from the X-Files Mulder and Scully.

Im so glad somebody started this thread! I repeat myself amongst mates countless times about new simpsons and simpsons of old. Personally i havn't watched a FULL new episode in about 3-4 years as the downward spiral began. When i look back and remember how addicted i was to the simpsons it's kinda depressing to hear about them continuoursly trying.
Best seasons were between 93 and 99! The writers are lame asses who are now appealing to brain dead stoners, or 6 yr olds.
The new episodes aren't as bad as everyone is making them out to be. Sure they've got nothing on the older episodes but I still have a few laughs at them.

I find nothing wrong with the new episodes. Let's remember people, it is very hard to maintain originality for 17 years. Some of this seasons episodes have been funny. The annual TOH, and the episode titled "The Italian Bob" were great.
I still enjoy these new episodes, but the older episodes are better. Still, the newer episodes are still far better than that unoriginal animated series called Family Guy.
This has to be the most lopsided poll ever in the history of BigFooty. And with good reason. Why do they find the need to base so many episodes overseas now?

I watched 10 minutes of the 'adults only' Simpsons on Tuesday night and didn't even smile let alone chuckle - it's gotten terrible.
My favourite Simpsons eps are "The Cartridge Family" where Homer buys a gun after the soccer brawl and "Fear Of Flying" though I've just noticed the last has been slammed in reviews - I agree the Marge story isn't that great in it but I think Homer's really good in it.
Let's remember people, it is very hard to maintain originality for 17 years.
I agree with that point, a lot of cult classic shows drop down in quality over the years. Also to the point where i think they've just stuck with a basic formula that works in some regard (ie: marketing machine still pumps out the $$$$ so you may aswell keep the cash cow flowing), without realising a great deal of the audience that has been with it since episode 1 have actually grown up.
A lot of people's tastes in things do change over the years, for example i loved things like Adam Sandler movies (well more specifically Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore) and South Park when i was in my mid teens. Yet TODAY i can't stand Adam Sandler's humour and have hardly watched an episode of South Park in recent times (most recent episode i saw was of Chef being killed off... and that was the first episode i watched in around 2-3 years).
I myself am a Simpsons nut, having grown up with the show i won't totally abandon it, as i'll always be interested in the show in some way (even if i'm not watching EVERY single new episode). I don't have a major issue with the early episodes, the problem with them for me is that i watched them so often when i was little..... seeing the same episode over and over and over again - thanks to taping and rewatching them after their first run airing AND also ch 10 getting on the repeat bandwagon sometime later and rerunning the episodes over and over, i eventually would get sick of it eg: classic episodes like Flaming Moes... After seeing it so many times, i got to the point of not wanting to watch it as i had seen it so often. I went a long time without watching it and many other older simpsons episodes as i was somewhat sick of it - didn't have to watch them all the time as i already knew them word for word.
I still do have an appreciation for them now, as i've learnt to not watch them over and over again, so that when they're on as repeats i can watch them now and still see why i originally loved the episodes when i was younger.
My parents won't have a bar of it though, they barely tolerated it when i played the episodes over and over all the time. Nowadays they still can't believe it is still running.
I've got seasons 1 - 6 on dvd, i only buy them to form part of a massive dvd collection. I havn't paid full price for them as yet, started collecting them when season 4 came out (got seasons 1 - 3 for under $30), then when season 5 came out i got season 4 at a reduced price and so on. I don't watch the episodes on dvd very often as Channel 10 tend to run the episodes i may want to watch at 6pm, so theres no need to grab the dvd that had the episode i wanted to watch when 10 had just aired it.
I used to watch them on Foxtel, havn't done so for a number of years, i believe late 2002 early 2003 was the last time i tuned in to the super simpsons weekend (i loved watching it on foxtel years ago, many episodes back to back), where i had basically watched all the episodes up to 2001 - early 2002.
