I know it's still early days yet with some teams going through transitional stages with the selection of their squads (i.e. England and Australia), but I thought it would be interesting to guage the thoughts of Bigfooty users, re: any possible 'smokeys' for the cup, given the success of South Africa and NZ thus far in this season's WSC competition.

Any one of Australia, New Zealand, India, and Sri Lanka could win it, in my opinion.
If you gave me $20 to have a bet at sportsbet with though, I'd plonk on New Zealand - they'd be at good odds, and a sound investment. ;)
However, I'd love for Australia to come out and stick it up the doubters both in this VB Series and in next years World Cup.

I think Australia will start as favourites, but I wouldn't write off England, New Zealand or South Africa.
I think the conditions in South Africa will suit teams with quality fast bowlers as the wickets usually have a bit of life in them. Teams like Sri Lanka, India & Pakistan I think will struggle a bit in those conditions.
For my smokey, watch out for Zimbabwe.

Pakistan will go OK, but India and Sri Lanka will struggle - Namibia might beat them.... India will take 8 spinners to bowl on SA tracks as per normal Indian selection process...
I reckon NZ are a big chance, South Africa at home are always going to be hard to beat and Australia will be up there.
Pakistan have some quality fast and swing bowlers and will also be a chnce there, but haven't had much cricket in the last 6 months. Hopefully, they can get enough games in the next 12 months to prepare for the world cup. They'd be my "smokey"...

MCG crowds better improve their game before then if Australia is going to have any chance of having games in Melbourne.
Cheers
Australia to romp home :D
Dark Horse has to be New Zealand....stupid thing i saw the other night after we lost our third straight ODI...the odds on Sports tonight as to who would win the the series and Australia were still the favourite even after 3 straight losses! Goes to show how good we are i suppose.

South Africa or Sri Lanka for me. New Zealand is a definately smokey and probably worth a bet if you have any spare cash.
How do they decide who hosts the World Cup of cricket? I heard somewhere that the West Indies were having the World Cup in 2007, although I have no idea when they decide which country gets to stage the event.

The 2007 world cup will definately be in the West Indies. Not sure when it was decided or how, but I have known about for this for ages. I also believe that there will be matches will be shared around with games in Canada, Florida, Bermuda (which is not officially part of the West Indies), as well as the West Indies islands.
Australia will have a long tour, with the regular West Indies tour preceding the World Cup (so we have time to get used to the conditions).
A long way off, but I am planning on being there for 2-3 months. I was in the West Indies in 1995 when we won back the Frank Worrell trophy and I saw all four test matches. 1999 was a great tour as well but I wasn't there. For anyone half considering going overseas for a cricket tour, I can thoroughly recommend it.
