View Full Version : Would we consider Aker?
On the main board, but I thought a purely Port disscussion maybe worthwhile.
My 2 cents. I think we should consider it. He is 29 years old. Does not seem too injury plagued. Would add experience and flair to our midfield rotations. I believe we will challenge for the flag in next 2-3 years which would fit into Ackers value window. A lot of our experienced player "should" get the arse this year and Ackers experience would not hurt the team in my opinion. Is a match winner.
We all know the negatives, but question is, do they outweigh the positives? Also, if we were to consider him, what would we be prepared to give up for him?

No, for a few reasons.
1. We don't really need him.
2. We do really need to keep replacing retiring/crap players with draftees.
3. It would cost us more to get him (in money terms), because Melbourne offers better media opportunities for him to access immediately, and to consolidate for after football.
4. We've already seen how older players can suddenly break down and be no good. We've got enough invested in this sort of thing already.
5. Why help Brisbane out?

You'd have to consider him. We survived Hueskes, we could survive Akermanis if the cost was right. Heaven's knows Matthews might even give us something to take him.

No. Youth. If we wanted to get Aker we should have got him 6years ago when he is in his prime. He is quickly turning into rabble and i will be utterly disapointed and angry if port even consider taking him. Waste of space and money on the Port list.

If he was a tough inside player with an intimidation factor, then it would be worthwhile to weigh up the other considerations. But Acker does not strike me as that sort of player. However, I'm sure that if he does move on he will do well.

Oh, and you'd also need to be convinced that he still has something to prove, and at this point I doubt it.

I just can't help thinking there will be a bit of a Byron Pickett factor about him and a change of scenery will do him good. I just don't think we can discount him. I reckon Port will need to add a couple of experienced players over the next couple of years (eg like Hardwick) and players of Ackers callibre should be considered as they do not come up all that often.

We already traded for an import last year - two, actually. If you trade for short term solutions every year, you end up becoming Carlton or the Kangaroos.

We've had a similar discussion (http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=241525&highlight=akermanis) not long ago. Williams said some nice things about Aker, wouldn't rule him out either as a player or assistant coach. That was probably before Choco went completely gung ho on young players tho.

Short answer: no
Long answer: hell no
only if;
a. we got him for next to nothing.
b. we pay him next to nothing.
c. he doesnt take the place of a kid.
d. he agreed to a media ban.
likely hood of any of these occuring is minimal. so its a no from me.

No, for all the reasons outlined by Porthos.

Less look at this years super draft where pick 40 = pick 20 from 2005 (and the No 1 from 2005 would be pick 7 this year).
Power picks are likely to be about 8, 24, 40, 56 & 72.
I would trade 56 but no more than that and the Lions would want something much higher - remember that he is contracted until the end of 2007 so they don't have to trade.
And remember there is a lot more media money in melbourne so clubs with spare salary dollars are more attractive eg essendon, st kilda

Would go against everything we are trying to achieve.
Only reason I would want him is if we pick him up with a 4th round pick and he plays for about $120k a year. Would not trade for him in a million years

I guess the answer is no as this clearly will not happen. I just see a lot of similarities between Ackers situation and that of Byron. I think who ever he goes to next year he will be more than servicable.
I think the biggest thing going against him will not be his age or his mouth - but his price tag

I think there is about 5 years difference in age (at the time we recruited Byron).
Probably the equivalent trade would be Hardwick but we picked him up to top up the side for a flag and we're not at that point now.

I'm talking about Byron's efforts at the Demons.
I think we might be at that point (premiership contention) by 2008 though which would be Ackers second year at the club.

I don't think Acker's mouth and the image Port want to project are a natural fit.

Aker is a champion. If the price was right we'd be crazy not to consider the option, and you all know it.

If we were in the same situation as we were in in 2002-03 then I would have a go for him. But right now I dont think we need his type of player. By the time we are ready for another serious crack at the flag he will be retired.
Nup. Topping up with ageing champions interferes with long-term rebuilding. Ask the Crows what they would have done in the case of Carey, if they had their time over.

Pick him up in the Pre-Season draft for minimal cash.... if we end up with him under any other circumstances than I shall be incredibly disapointed. That said couldn't care less if we didn't get him.
Don't need to listen to Aker bagging Chocco and saying nobody likes Tredrea or Cornes on Nova

Forget having Akers, he's the biggest cancer in the AFL.

Aker is a great player but we don't need his ego at Alberton when we are trying to rebuild a team.
He cops a lot of flack for his comments in a non-AFL, one team town like Brisbane so imagine how he will go down in an AFL obsessed two team town like Adelaide. Can you imagine how much he would stir the Cow's supporters up. They think Chad is a big mouth.
Pick him up in the Pre-Season draft for minimal cash....Acker is still under contract to Brisbane for 2007 so if he leaves at the end of 2006 it will be as a trade not via the PSD.

If the price is right, I would definitely consider Akermanis. He is a champion and match winner and would compliment our exciting young midfield.
