Eddie McGuire's Nine nightmare

WHAT might work in the world of footy is turning out to be a perilous
path for Eddie McGuire to follow in his day job as CEO at Network Nine.
Unlike Collingwood's winning form, Nine has had what media analysts
have labelled the worst week in its history. It began on Monday when
an internet site revealed the inner workings of Nine, laid bare in an explosive document that has kept the network's lawyers busy in
the Supreme Court ever since as they fight to keep its contents
secret.
Among its potentially devastating details, it reportedly revealed
Mr McGuire using some of the crude language of the locker room,
referring to him wanting to "bone" -- or sack -- Today Show
co-host Jessica Rowe.
Seven Network's news boss, Peter Meakin, was for many years the
news supremo at Nine.
"It is a very unfortunate term and I am sure Eddie is mortified that those comments made it into print," he said.
Mr McGuire has since publicly endorsed Rowe, guaranteeing her $500,000
a year job is safe.
"But the damage is done. You can't run a TV network like you run a
football club, especially like a Melbourne footy club when you're in
Sydney," one senior Nine manager said.
At Nine's Sydney headquarters, Mr McGuire uses footy analogy to
address his "team", talks about the positions they play in and he's
been giving what have been called Collingwood-style pep talks to
Rowe every day this week.
Tellingly, there are now no women in key positions on "broadway" as
the network's heavy hitting shows are known.
"McGuire is in danger of losing touch with half his audience," said a
former Nine senior female producer who escaped to greener pastures.
The network's highest profile female star, Jana Wendt, has been
consulting lawyers this week as she "reviews her options".
Meanwhile, Mr McGuire has been criticised for surrounding himself
with Melbourne appointments, some made before his promotion.
They include former AFL lawyer Jeff Browne, who is Nine's new
executive director, chief operating officer Ian Audsley, ex-The
Bulletin editor Garry Linnell, recently announced as head of news and current affairs, and key roles in sales and entertainment production.
"All these Melbourne people in key positions is a problem. A CEO has to
be able to trust and know people, but he has to realise you don't have
to come from Melbourne to be one of them," said a senior Nine
manager.
Mr McGuire's high profile always meant he would be under more
scrutiny than other CEOs.
"Eddie McGuire is a big name and therefore that makes him a big target
who attracts a lot of attention so we've become the news for all the
wrong reasons and you can certainly feel the tension around the
place," said the Nine source.
"But look, Eddie is a tough bastard and I've seen enough of him to
know that he won't back down on this.
"He has never been sacked from anywhere and while he might get the
sack from here one day it won't be anytime soon."

Since when does wanting to 'bone' somebody mean you want to sack them. Are you sure he didn't mean something else?

Are they sure? Bone usually means something quite different. More "in the sack" than "get the sack."

Seems Eddie Maguire is the new Jason Akermanis, shooting his mouth off. Maybe Ed is not quite the professional that I thought he was. I presumed because he had been a good manager elsewhere, that he would be at nine as well, but that's not necessarily the case. Or maybe it's just too much for him. Would make it hard for Jessica with that looming over your head.

I thought that was odd when I read it.
Now Eddie has come out publicly 'rooting' for Jessica Rowe.

From the tribal mind blog
Those familiar with the way Eddie McGuire conducts his business communications tell us that he is fond of a peculiar turn of phrase: He uses the verb "to bone" when he means "to get rid of".
Most people see a sexual connotation in the notion of "boning" somebody, but the Chief Executive of Channel Nine apparently derives his usage from the ancient Aboriginal custom of pointing the bone at an enemy, who is then supposed to disappear. Maybe it's jargon from that funny form of football they play in Melbourne. Anyway, what Niners are currently wondering is: how long before James Packer bones Eddie McGuire?
Eddie is so hip =) He's down with the aboriginal lingo
unfortunately thats the only thing he has that IS long.
ie - fear not Jessica, you wont feeel a thing.
McGuire: I have a long memory
By ROD NICHOLSON
02jul06
EMBATTLED Channel 9 chief executive Eddie McGuire came out fighting yesterday, vowing to rescue his network's tarnished reputation and warning that he had a long memory.
"You ain't seen nothin' yet," Mr McGuire told the Sunday Herald Sun after he flew into Melbourne to visit his elderly parents and to watch Collingwood play.
"The fight has just begun. I don't like being harassed and what's happening is virtual harassment.
"I have a long memory."
Mr McGuire denied he threatened to "bone" (apparently meaning to sack) Today co-host Jessica Rowe at a meeting with other executives on May 31.
An affidavit signed by Nine's former head of news, Mark Llewellyn, asserted Mr McGuire talked of sacking.
Llewellyn claimed Mr Maguire said: "What are we going to do about Jessica? When should we bone her? I reckon it should be next week."
Mr Llewellyn also claimed he was asked to swallow "a s--- sandwich" by accepting a pay cut from $750,000 to $400,000.
Mr McGuire was visibly annoyed by what he said was a "personal attack" and "harassment".
"We (McGuire and Llewellyn) have a different recollection of various, private conversations between chief executive and news editor about important news shows," he said.
"The conversation was about a show (Today, co-hosted by Jessica Rowe) that everyone was talking about.
"I don't use the word 'bone'. It simply is not a word I use.
"We are not going to go out and attack people. We are going out to win. And we will."
Yesterday, Mr Llewellyn, speaking through his lawyers, said he stood by the affidavit.
As Mr McGuire came under fire for his "brutal and vulgar" comments, Ms Rowe said: "I'm great. Looking forward to a good weekend."
Mr McGuire said he would not change his style or tactics.
"The current kerfuffle is one person's (Mark Llewellyn's) view of Channel 9," he said.
"News and current affairs have been on the decline for five years.
"Our competition is having a crack at our expense. People should look at ratings, share price and balance sheet."
Mr McGuire said he was amazed people were "so excited" about his hourly routine.
"I have elderly parents," he said. "I'm a football supporter. There is Channel 9 in Melbourne and we are the AFL rights holders.
"Last time I looked, you were allowed the weekend off in Australia."

Wonder what Carla Mc Guire thinks of young Edward wanting to "bone" Ms Rowe ?

I suspect he may be more worried about his marriage than channel nine at the minute .

I really think the Rum Corps hate to see a Melbournian in charge of 'their' network. I'm not a huge fan of Eddie, but it seems people will beat anything up because of who he is not what he does. It's boils down to tall poppy syndrome IMO. In their heart of hearts, they are *hoping* he fails.

Bert Newton ought to be the first to go, along with Sam Newman. It would unfair on Eddie to have to drop the guillotine but the buck stops with him. Channel Nine are not paying him mega bucks just for his looks.
Made a huge mistake in a) agreeing to the Fooy Show World Cup special then b) deciding to go and host it with his mates the week he "boned" over 100 staff and cut back the budgets at news & current affairs.
One thing I found surprsing in an article was that at least 5 off camera females in senior managment have left since Eddie took over. Leaving the network with not one female in a senior management role.
That can't be good for morale for the remaining workforce and for creative ideas going forward.

Not singling you out Goalpie (you're just the only critter here who seems to have mentioned this). But I think you've captured alot of folks feelings about her really well.
I actually feel really sorry for her. I think she's got great potential and talent, and at some point, so did Ch9 (and Ch10). Besides, who else are they gonna get? They used that airhead Mckinnon, and while she looked pretty enough, it was a simple case of "head-on-a-stick". Rowe at least has personality. Sometimes a little too bubbly for my tastes, but certainly not detestable.
The problem (with the Today program) isn't Rowe, its Stefanovic. He wants to be Steve Leibmann-and just hasn't got the personality or credibility (and I'm not suggesting that Leibmann has those qualities in spades either) to do the job.
Think about it;Steve leaves and is replaced by Stefanovic. Ratings start to fall and suddenly its Grimshaw's fault. Get rid of Grimshaw and they plummett further. Its not the sheilas' fault. They need to take a long look at that wooden boofhead who shares the floor with Jessica, and send him packing.
Bottom line-they need a much stronger male figure to co-anchor Today, and it isn't like they don't have a considerable pool of talent at Ch9 to start with.
But with the amount of defections that have been going on at Ch9, I wonder if they still have the executive talent to make the right decisions.
I used to think she was awesome when I was living in Sydney. The only thing i didn't like about her reading the 5pm news was the constant flirting between her and Tim Webster. She is a good news reader, really good actually. No wonder ch 10 were up in arms when she left.
Maybe they should get her to do what she does best and that is read the nightly news. I would rather look at her than the old guy who reads the nightly news in melbourne.

The problem with 'Today' goes far beyond on-air 'talent.'
Nobody seems to know what the show is about anymore.
For the life of me, I don't know why network executives put newsreaders into presenting roles that demand some sort of 'personality.'
Because most get horribly exposed without that autocue.
What I want to know is - when is Eddie going to co-host 'Today?' ;)

I'm surprised there's all this talk about the 'underperforming' Today show, it was up against cartoons for all these years, it never had to perform. I doubt the morning figures of Today or Sunrise would warrant the money spent on them.
