I found an interesting article on Daniel Wells. he was a Port supporter as a kid, maybe we could get him over to play with his mates?

I found an interesting article on Daniel Wells. he was a Port supporter as a kid, maybe we could get him over to play with his mates? It seems really rare that that counts once a player is inducted into an AFL club. I can't think of a player move where pre draft loyalties mattered. Occasionally it is a happy coincidence.
What might matter is his aboriginality. We are accruing a fair few aboriginal players, and what seem pretty tenuous kinship links to non-aboriginals seem to matter a lot to them.

We'd probably have to give up Shaun Burgoyne for him.

I say keep dreaming.

Careers on the line
By ANDREW CAPEL
04jul06

RESULTS in the next nine weeks will determine who stays at Alberton next year.

That is the opinion of inaugural Port Adelaide squad member Stuart Dew, who says the players are not only playing to make the finals but also their own and team-mates' careers.

Dew does not believe coach Mark Williams has made up his mind on the futures of too many squad members and that results as well as individual performances in the last nine games will have a major bearing on who retains their spots on the playing list.

"We had that situation last year as well where team success can determine guys' careers," Dew, 26, said. "I think the young guys are aware of that as well so they are keen to do well not only for themselves but also to hopefully prolong some guys' careers. It would be a shame to see some careers cut short just because we didn't win a few games at the end of the year."

Port, which will move back into the top eight if it beats the eighth-placed Tigers at AAMI Stadium on Saturday night (7.10pm), could dump or trade as many as eight players at the end of the season - the same number as last year - as it tries to build a side capable of winning its next premiership.

Champion Gavin Wanganeen already has retired, injured Brownlow Medal runner-up Josh Francou, weighed down by chronic knee problems, is expected to follow suit and veterans Matthew Bishop (injured) and Adam Kingsley and Peter Walsh (SANFL) face uphill battles to earn new contracts.

Brisbane premiership player Aaron Shattock and disappointing youngster Ben Eckermann are in big danger of being delisted while premiership hero Toby Thurstans could again be put up for trade after being offered to Hawthorn at the end of last year.

Dew said Walsh and Kingsley, who played well for West Adelaide and the Port Magpies on the weekend, were itching to get back into the Power side to prove their worth. "Walshy's keen to get back in - he's played some good footy and obviously with a few injuries he might get back in. And Adam Kingsley's in the same boat," Dew said.

Their chances for AFL recalls have been boosted by the punctured lung suffered by star utility Chad Cornes, which will sideline him for three matches, and doubts over whether captain Warren Tredrea (knee) will be fit to face the Tigers.

Cornes was injured in the pre-game warm-up before Saturday's six-goal loss to Melbourne at the MCG and returned to Adelaide by car. He spent yesterday in hospital and is expected to be released today and resume light training towards the end of the week.

Tredrea and fellow key forward Damon White, who missed the defeat to Melbourne with a sprained thumb, face fitness tests to determine their availability. White is rated the better chance. The expected absence of Tredrea and loss of gamebreaker Cornes will again leave Port short of tall forward line options - an area which doomed it to failure against the Dees.

"Any side without Tredrea, White (who is expected to play) and Cornes is a bit of a worry," Dew said. "But we look forward to maybe a couple of guys coming in. Maybe Toby Thurstans can come in and kick some goals and hopefully we can play one of the talls down forward rather than loose down back this week. And some of the midfielders need to step up and kick some goals because we can't always rely on one or two guys." Given what is at stake - eighth spot - Port is viewing Saturday night's clash as an eight-point game. "If we lose this game we really do lose touch (with the top eight)," Dew noted.

JOSH Mahoney has been charged by the AFL match review panel with a level one striking offence against Melbourne's Cameron Bruce for an incident in the final quarter on Saturday. He can accept a reprimand and 42.19 points towards his future record, due to an existing five-year good record.

Injury list - Matthew Bishop (torn pectoral muscle) 4-6 weeks, Chad Cornes (ribs/punctured lung) 3 weeks, Josh Francou (knee) ongoing assessment, Warren Tredrea (knee) test, Damon White (thumb) test.

Rather ironic that Dew is the one interviewed here.

Is it just me or does it seem that, since our recent string of wins, old Power is coming to the forefront again?

We're hearing about how Bishop is a player wanted straight back in the side, Dewy talking about the players as if he wasn't our most tradeable player...hmm.

How's that saying go ... old age and cunning will always triumph over youth and enthusiasm ... ;)
