New contract for Craig

The Adelaide Football Club has announced a new three-year agreement with senior coach Neil Craig.

The new agreement is for 2007, 2008 and 2009. Neil was already contracted to the end of the 2007 season, but this new contract will take him out a further two years.

Neil Craig started in the role of senior coach in Round 14, 2004. At the end of that season, he was appointed on a three-year term as senior coach of the Adelaide Football Club. His overall record to date, is 33 wins and 14 losses (a winning ratio of 70%).

However, the Club’s decision to offer Neil a new contract is not based solely on a win-loss ratio – as healthy as that may be. More, as Chairman, Bill Sanders explains, it’s about Neil’s overall performance to date; and the clear picture/plans that he has for the future:

“Neil has had a tremendous impact on our Club in a relatively short space of time,” Mr Sanders said. “He came into the role with a very broad background, and that has translated into an outstanding performance across the range of heavy demands as Senior Coach of an AFL Club.

“It’s also critical in this business to have a clear vision for the team in regard to its ongoing development – and the way we want to play the game now and into the future. Neil has that vision, and as a Board, we believe – as we have from the start – he has the capacity to be a long-term coach of our Club.”

Craig had previous roles as assistant coach and fitness coach with the club dating back to 1997. His elevation to the contracted position of senior coach at the end of 2004, came at a time when the club underwent and published a comprehensive review and planning process – especially in relation to the redevelopment of the List.

Since then, Craig – and his coaching/support staff – have worked tremendously hard to put that planning into action. He says, while the Contract renewal provides stability of direction, there’s still room for growth and improvement:

“This is an incredibly demanding job, but the support I’ve had from the Club, the Staff, the Players – and the Supporters – has been fantastic,” Craig said.

“As demanding as it is, it’s also a challenge that’s great to be involved with. Our players, in particular, have been outstanding in wanting to learn and develop; and the thing for us going forward is to push the boundaries even further.

“Personally, I’m really looking forward to us being the absolute best we can be, now and into the future.”

Chief Executive Officer, Steven Trigg, added: “Neil has quickly built on our want as a Club to be innovative and inclusive. People will have seen plenty of examples of that to date.

“But from where I see it, an even greater strength is communication and people management. And for where we want to go (in further developing the List), this quality is critical – giving us great confidence in Neil’s renewal.”

There will be further information posted this afternoon on afc.com.au

Never in doubt and the news of Worsfolds extension would have helped move things along

Great news.

He has changed so many things about this club, all of them for the better.

Not only are we current ladder leaders, we are also leading the competition in many different ways.

The future is bright and will always be so when Craig is around.

Good to hear. Slightly surprised it's happened now, but still positive news for the club.

It's excellent news, but like RR69, a bit surprised. Nonetheless we should see how he reacts to the time when our club leaders start to retire, and how much of a threat we can be to the competition when that starts to happen. :)

Great news.

Now gets rid of the speculation, which could have been an unwarranted distraction come finals time.

Lots!

Not necessarily Craigy has always been in this for the AFC unlike other coaches we hold dear to our hearts who are after money, in saying that the AFC have probably looked after him well but it wouldnt surprise me if he was still on the lower scale of pay packets coaches wise.

Exactly. Good move by the club, well done to all involved (even though Jars wanted him to get 5 years:D )

Good news, good move by the club, and good timing.

I wonder if there'll be any move to tie up the assistants under long term deals - particularly Don Pyke, who's name is being bandied around as a senior coach in waiting, given that Freo may well be looking for a new coach come next year? Or would most assistant coach contracts have a get-out clause if a senior spot becomes available?

Probably they all have a get-out clause, but I like your thinking.

At the moment it's a great team effort with Craig and his merry men.

I think this is a bigger issue for the club than the more often repeated one about our star players getting older.

The coaching box is really working well at the minute. We need to make sure we can keep it together as much as possible.

I don't think the process has been very transparent. Did they even interview Eade before renewing his contract?:D

Haha i read that, what a great man Jars is. Should've given him the million bucks a year too!!

Good effort by Craigy, hes only just signed on yet we have already given him an extension... which means welldone to the men at AFC who are behind this decision.

Two things one why would they want to leave and who out of them would be in line for a senior job?

he was originally contracted until the end of 2007 so there wouldnt have been any speculation come finals time this year.

Great News for the Adelaide Football Club...

Craig is by far the ebst coach in the competition and the players have a lot of respect for him.....His extension was never in doubt IMO.

This is the second best thing this football club has ever done :)

I am also very proud of the club for what they did here. This is not an extension per such. His current deal was re-negotiated. Craig was pretty much one of the least payed coaches in the comp. To club's credit they renegotiated his deal so that he gets paid more next year than he would have with his old deal. Craigy gets a much deserved pay rise and we keep the best coach in the country under contract.

Now we need to sign up our assistants and move onto players.

Mr Crow!

I read in one of the articles from a Victorian paper that they were suggesting that it was around $600,000 per year.

Worth every cent of it. :thumbsu:

Who would of thought he'd take the Crows this far after the stuffing they copped at the Gabba in one of his first games?
